Richard: Sorry, I never heard of your most interesting and unusual song titles

Who knows you (or someone else) may have heard of this one that I can't remember: It's the name of a girl. Her first name is very lon and the last part is "Samma Kamma Wacky Brown"

Carra Barra Wirra Canna
(Rolf Harris)

There's a lake in South Australia,
Little lake with lovely name,
And the story wound around it
From the picaninnies came.
Every night the native mothers
Croon this lovely lullaby,
Croon across the moonlit waters,
to the star up in the sky.

CHORUS
Carra Barra Wirra Canna,
Little star upon the lake,
Guide me through the hours of darkness,
Keep me safely till I wake.

Piccaninnies' heads are nodding,
Drowsy crooning fills the air,
Little eyes at last are closing,
And the boat of dreams is there.
Guide my boat across the waters,
Cross the waters still and deep,
Light me with your little candle,
Safely to the land of sleep.

CHORUS
and have a look at http://cyberfair.gsn.org/elanora/carra.html for more info

Thanks Earl, it's been driving me nuts to have the tune in my head and only be able to sing four words of it.

Thanks, Ted from Australia. Great to have the words again. Do you know who wrote it? Was it Harris or is it trad.?

We checked the site and couldn't make the connection so tried the home page but weren't sure where to go from there.

Richard,G'day.
Yes it's definatly a Rolf Harris original.
I saw him do it once in concert and he said that he
adapted it from an Aboriginal story that he had heard
I just tried the site and it came up OK.
Give it another try Regards,Ted from Australia:-)>

I've still got Rolf's 'Sun Arise' LP with it on, good song!

So is 'Sun Arise' itself. Rolf wrote a few good 'uns, it's a shame he's often only remembered (and derided by some) for his biggest hit "Two Little Boys" - he did a lot more stuff than that.

ABC on the air back in 1969, '70 distributed books to schools then your class P.A. would be booked for the radio show to play through. Carra Barra Wirra Canna was one of the songs in one of the editions.

I've always wondered if this song actually refers to LAKE CADIBARRAWIRRACANNA (S28 50 E135 26). Allegedly, back when aircraft communication was by morse code, captains used this as a reporting point so that their radio operators would have to key out the name.

the score is available in a number of books, including this one.

50 popular children's songs [music] : easy guitar with strums / arranged by Jerry Snyder. 1982.

I searched Music Australia here for "Carra Barra Wirra Canna" & found 16 records in the catalogue. Australian residents can arrange inter library loans & non-residents can either purchase copies of what they are interested in (depending on copyright restrictions) or follow the links to on-line booksellers to find their own copy.

Did Rolf paint a large picture of Lake Cadibarra Wirracanna at a charity night at the St. George Leagues Club and auction it?
