BS/Help : Pre-Show Music

I'm working on a sound design project for my Elements of Production II class, and having a bit of trouble. The play we've been given to do this project for is Equus, a highly disturbing tale of psychological problems, the coldness and sterility of the modern world, and the search for passion and worship in life. One of the tasks of sound design is to come up with pre-show music, and I'm having one hell of a time thinking of what might be appropriate for this show. Do any of you wonderful knowledgeable folks perchance have ideas?

"Pictures At An Exhibition"
- Emmerson, Lake and Palmer (choose your favorite cut)

Aphex Twin is exactly what your looking for!! Try Vol 2. Selected Ambient Works . Also, try Radiohead's Kid A. "Kid A," "Treefingers," "How To Disappear Completely (And Never Be Found)" will work wonders.

How about some Meredith Monk? Margaret

Hey, why not go for something cutting and ironic? It's been quite a while since I've seen or read the play, but I seem to remember a biting undercurrent of ironic humour at times.

Why not pick something offkilter from the time period you're portraying?

Could be fun. Gads, do I miss school theater.

Actually, one of the nice things about this play is that I don't have to go period with it. I've chosen to work more with mood than period, so I'm not real worried about the whole "1973" thing. I'm going to start looking into y'all's suggestions this afternoon--thanks!

How do you want to set up the audience? Do you want them relaxed at the rise of the curtain (assuming they don't know the play), so that they're jolted all the more as the disturbing elements emerge, or do you want them a bit on edge in anticipation of the same?

I'd like them already just a bit on edge from the very beginning, letting the tension hold until it reaches a breaking point at the climax of the play.

Or "Sauceful of Secrets", it's especially haunting and unsettling.

Of course, if you want some fun, try "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict." Takes me right back to college days.

Of course there's the 2nd movement to Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs...

Welcome to the Machine - Pink FLoyd

Ed, after all our debate about Roger Waters, I'm surprised that you suggested the wall...and I chose a song without him....HA HA HA

Yeah Danny Boy, well I'm going back to "Careful with that Ax, Eugene" and that could be good advice for you too!
