Many song titles in this thread have been converted to links by a Mudelf.

Does anyone have the words to "Give me that old time nutrition" parody? A couple of the verses go something like:

Hostess Twinkies sure are filling
Hostess Twinkies sure are filling
Hostess Twinkies sure are filling-
the pockets of ITT

Give me that old time nutrition
Give me that old time nutrition
Give me that old time nutrition
It's good enough for me.

Recently heard someone say, "Avoid fruits and nuts. You are what you eat."

Colleen Savitsky's currently running around in a handmade shirt with pinecone-patterned fabric. She points out gleefully that it's her Euell Gibbons shirt ("D'ja ever eat a pine tree? Some parts are edible"), so she's wearing it to celebrate Yule.

. . . and here I thought we were going to talk about those great old time Southern eatin' songs.

Hoecakes, Hominy, and Sassafras Tea
Ham Beats All Meat
Blackeyed Peas and Cornbread
Onion Tops and Turnip Greens
Bread and Gravy
Sidemeat and Cabbage
Country Ham and Red Gravy
Bile Them Cabbage Down

And that's just a few, without trying very hard.

I remember them as something like:

Give me that old time nutrition (x3)
It's good enough for me.

Hostess Twinkies are enriching (x3)
The pockets of ITT

Feed your TV TV dinners (x3)
But don't feed them to me.

Beyond that, you're on your own....

Utah Phillips used to raise Christmas Monkeys. He said that they were Yule Gibbons.

OLD TIME NUTRITION
As recorded by Lorre Wyatt, Caroline Paton, John Guth, George Ward, & Robin Paton on Lorre Wyatt's album "Roots and Branches" 1985.
Tune: "Old Time Religion" (except last verse)

CHORUS: Gi' me that old-time nutrition. (3x)
It's good enough for me.

Feed your TV, TV dinners, (3x)
But don't feed them to me.

Hostess Twinkies sure are filling (3x)
The pockets of I.T.T.

They can sugar-coat the cornflakes (3x)
But they can't sweet-talk me.

While we clip those ten-cent coupons (3x)
They're clipping you and me.

They spend more on the package (3x)
Than the stuff they stuff inside.

In that long list of ingredients (3x)
You might even find some food.

[Tune: "Rock of Ages"] When I die don't bury me.
I've been embalmed by BHT.

This was mentioned by Dale Rose on 05-Dec-1997:

From Negro Folk Rhymes: Wise and Otherwise by Thomas W. Talley (New York: The Macmillan Company, 1922), page 67:

HAM BEATS ALL MEAT

Dem white folks set up in a Dinin' Room
An' dey charve dat mutton an' lam'.
De Nigger, he set 'hind de kitchen door,
An' he eat up de good sweet ham.

Dem white folks, dey set up an' look so fine,
An' dey eats dat ole cow meat;
But de Nigger grin an' he don't say much,
Still he know how to git what's sweet.

Deir ginger cakes taste right good sometimes,
An' deir Cobblers an' deir jam.
But fer every day an' Sunday too,
Jest gimme de good sweet ham.

[Chorus?] Ham beats all meat,
Always good an' sweet.
Ham beats all meat,
I'se always ready to eat.
You can bake it, bile it, fry it, stew it,
An' still it's de good sweet ham.

HAM BEATS ALL MEAT
As recorded by Dr. Humphrey Bate & His Possum Hunters, 1928.

1. White folks go to butcher shop to buy that ol' cow meat.
Darkeys go to the smokehouse and grab that ham that's sweet.

CHORUS: Ham beats all meat (always good and sweet).
Ham beats all meat (always ready for to eat).
Ham beats all meat (always good and sweet).
Ham beats all meat (always ready for to eat).

2. White folks in the dining room, eatin' on the mutton an' lamb,
Darkeys in the kitchen, going for the good sweet ham.
