Click here for a listing of most of Steve's songs.....just scroll down and click on Galway Girl. Lyrics, no chords. But there is a home page that has some tips for playing his songs on the Tab page.........

Bawn, old love, worked this one out a couple of weeks back, or at least what my ear hears (and there's only only one of them works) PM me your e-mail address and I'll wire it you. Eric the Viking does a mean version.

THE GALWAY GIRL
(Steve Earle)

Well, I took a stroll on the old long walk
Of a day -I-ay-I-ay
I met a little girl and we stopped to talk
Of a fine soft day -I-ay-I-ay
And I ask you, friend, what's a fella to do
'Cause her hair was black and her eyes were blue
And I knew right then I'd be takin' a whirl
'Round the Salthill Prom with a Galway girl

We were halfway there when the rain came down
Of a day -I-ay-I-ay
And she asked me up to her flat downtown
Of a fine soft day -I-ay-I-ay
And I ask you, friend, what's a fella to do
'Cause her hair was black and her eyes were blue
So I took her hand and I gave her a twirl
And I lost my heart to a Galway girl

When I woke up I was all alone
With a broken heart and a ticket home
And I ask you now, tell me what would you do
If her hair was black and her eyes were blue
I've traveled around I've been all over this world
Boys I ain't never seen nothin' like a Galway girl

Great as it was when it was new, the song has been done thoroughly to dead in Ireland with Sharon Shannon recording it with every man and his dog and a plethora of others doing increasingly weak second third and further down the line versions.

It needs time out.

I did a gig at an Irish Theme bar a couple of weeks ago, and was asked for this one at least four times. I'd never heard of it before, but I'm playing there again tomorrow night, Friday 16th, and also on the afternoon of the 17th.(St Patricks day) This time I'm ready for ya!!

I love this song. Great choice for a video response for "South Bound Train".

I agree, Brilliant!

It's on Diamond Mountain Sessions CD, very enjoyable selection of songs and tunes with Sharon Shannon and friends.
