Is either The Queen of Hearts or Faithful Lovers and Other Phenomena available anywhere in anything other than vinyl? I can't seem to find them through regular channels, like Amazon, any other ideas? Or am I the only one who's heard of her anyway?

Have you checked with Dick Greenhaus?

Mrrzy- Cynthia Gooding sang in an era replete with women who sang low and men who sang high. She did some good LPs, alone and with Theo Bikel---none seem to have made it to CD as yet.

And occasionally, like on "Ankaranin"(sp.) she sang high AND low!

You ain't the ONLY one who's heard of her Mrrzy, but don't count on this thread challenging "Mwaaaaaah" in length.

Dear Mrrzy...

I have loved Cynthia Gooding from the moment I heard her....my Queen of Hearts album, now scratchy and stick-y is still an all-time favorite. What a gutty voice, what great taste in songs...they formed the basis of my own tyro repetoire in the late 50's.....Maybe if enough of us start requesting CD's from old-timey sources one might become available....

As a young man I visited a friendly but very busy Cynthia Gooding when she was teaching at Princeton. It must have been about 1974. She had been writing novels. Does anyone know if any were ever published or what became of her books or manuscripts? I met her in July-August 1967 when she was on the staff at Pinewoods Folk Music Camp in Buzzards Bay. What a camp week that was! I only went once but it had a very profound effect on me. While living in west Florida I somehow got a work scholarship as a lifeguard thanks to having earned a Senior Lifesaving certificate from Red Cross. Jean Ritchie's boys were the main swimmers that year. May Gadd was up and about, Phillip Merrill (sp?), Tony Saletan and Irene Kossoy were still together, Charlie Chin from NYC impressed me lots, Anne and Frank Warner were there with their sons; John Anthony Scott has just published his folk song book; there's was a beautiful girl from Penn. who seemed like a real goddess, too. Sweet Mary Faith Rhodes played autoharp as did Jean and Irene and Charlie and Tony. It was quite a wonderful time for me. I had lost my money hitchhiking up from DC, left it in someone's car. I had just enough money to fly back to Birmingham ($40. for a night flight standby) but it was stuck down in the the bottom of my perscription sunglasses case which was lost under the back seat of the car of the family who had picked me up in route to Buzzard's Bay. (A year later they found it and sent it to me in Alabama.) A young woman named Diane Lavoie (I think?) gave this penniless folkie a ride to her flat on Marlboro Street in Boston where I camped out for a few days, got a job at a gift shop in Brookline and rented an actual hallway in a basement off of Beacon Street where I slept. Many misadventures later I got sick with kidney stones not knowing what was wrong. All to tell folks: don't try to make a living as a folksinger. I'll bet Cynthia would say the same thing. PS Where is her shrine, memorial, grave, etc?

IS SHE DEAD?

Thanks dick greenhaus, what a pity.

Mudlark, second the motion! You start the petition and I'll add the first hundred signatures...

I used to play Man Piaba (that old Belafonte record, don't actually know the album title) and Cynthia Gooding together (those were the days you could stack records), and my friends tended to get BOTH of their genders wrong. *sigh*

If anyone has a DECENT copy of either, but especially Queen of Hearts, can you tape it/them for me? PM me for address and $$ if you can...

A while back I picked up a copy of Ms Gooding's radio show with Bob Dylan as her guest. I think it was on that show that Dylan told Pete Seeger he was from Wyoming or Montana when Pete asked him where he was from.

I just ran across this thread. She is buried at Princeton Cemetery, on Wiggins street in Princeton, NJ. She died in 1988. I am in the process of putting together a FB page for her and trying to get a better handle on her music. I will be posing more digital music on cynthiagooding.com if I can ever get the user name and password from the administrator. I can be contacted at cgdaugter@gmail.com.

There seems to be only one CD of Cynthia Goodings work available -
a 2006 release from Collectors Choice Music:

2. Ankaraning Tasina Bak
3. Eminem
4. Katip
5. Yashi Meral
6. Donde Vas Rey Alfonsito
7. Tres Moricas–Anda Diciendo
8. Conde Olinos
9. Eres Alta y Delgada–La Molinera
from EKL 6 Turkish and Spanish Folksongs
midding: Al Koyun, Ay un Galan

10. La Bamba
11. La Llorona
12. El Palo Verde
13. Rosita Alvirez
14. Roman Castillo
15. El Tecolote
16. General Felipe Angeles
17. Que Linda Esta La Manana
from EKL 8 Mexican Folk Songs
missing: Lucrecia, La Voltereta, El Arreo.

For those who can stomach mp3 downloads, material is available
from itunes and like purveyors.

There was ONE early ELEKTRA album issued in CD-R form (EKL-2 Jean Ritchie) on TARTARE 8014, but is seems to be currently unavailable, and no further issues have appeared.

Did anyone on this forum support that endeavor?

Best wishes, Thomas.

When I first got interested in folk music, Cynthia Gooding's "Queen of Hearts" lp was one of the first half-dozen records I bought--and learned songs from. I've got a lot of mileage out of "Queen Eleanor's Confession" (historically inaccurate, but a helluva song!).

I love her voice. Rich contralto.

My "Queen of Hearts" record has been played 'til the grooves are flat. I really wish it were available on CD, along with her other recordings.

Another great record is "Young Man and a Maid" which she did with Theodore Bikel.

I have Faithful Lovers and Other Phenomena on CD/MP3 now, still seeking the Queen of Hearts album?

Cynthia Gooding's "Queen of Hearts" LP was one of the first folk records I bought early on--and learned songs from. Cynthia Gooding was a marvelous singer with a wealth of great songs.

She should be far better known than she is.

She led an adventurous life, too, from what little I've heard. She should be better known. Queen of Hearts is an album for the ages, and should be on CD. Bob

I know where I can borrow the original record of "Queen of Hearts." I have all the equipment necessary to make a very good CD copy of it. Serious question ... what kind of trouble could I expect if I did so and then offered it to MC members? bob(deckman)nelson
