Music in Sperryville VA on June 2 and 3

I don't know if we have any Mudcatters near this part of the world, but; my wife and I will be at the Sperryville Civil War Memorial Event again this year, in Speryville VA over the weekend of June 2 and 3. The event takes place in the afternoons of both days, in and around the little town center.

Last year there were several excellent historian/author presentations in the little bookshop in Sperryville, followed by some great learned discussion. There will be some period performers there, as well as me (non-period performer), re-enactor exibits and more.

I hope if you're able, and have the time you'll come on out and say hello.

Thanks. Where's Sperryville in relation to Richmond?

Just at the northeast middle entrance to Shenandoah/Sky Line Drive.

Take Route 64 west toward Charlottesville, but catch Route 522 north to Sperryville. (If you go over the Sky Line you will decend into Luray. Its a beautiful drive and should take you about two hours). The local area, including the old school house, is an antique hunter's paradise.

The really pretty ride in the Springtime, is to loop Route 231 out of Charlottesville up to Sperryville and then take the Sky Line back down to Waynesboro and Route 64 (or the exact reverse).

Do not take the Sky Line if you get air sick or motion sickness, as the turnbacks put you looking over the edge of the oldest mountains in the New World. Every picture of the Blue Ridge does not do these views justice.

(My daughters family lives in Richmond, near Monument Dr and Staples Mill, and I know the area well).

Thank you. I live near that area myself and work at a hospital on Monument Avenue. Small world. Sharon

My wife and I are very much looking forward to the visit. I had planned to try to make it a working trip, and book a series of other dates in the area, but my wife couldn;t get away that long, and in the end we decided we'd take the few days and enjoy the country.

I hope y'all can make it!

Well, this thread didn't get a lot of attention, so I suspect there are not a lot of VA based Mudcatters ... but just in case; this is the weekend. My wife and I are off to Sperryville VA for the Sperryville Civil War Memorial Event. Please come on and see us, if you're in the area. We'll be at the event's nerve center, the little bookstore in the center of town. I expect to be playing early afternoon on both Sat and Sun.

... hope to see ya there!

You have gotten my attention, Jed. It is just that I can't attend. Rats! So near and yet so far. I am living about eighty miles west of there.

I am working at the aforementioned hospital this weekend. Work obligations do get in my way sometimes. Have fun! Sharon

My wife and I just got in. We had a free day today and spent it on the skyline drive, in Shenendoah National Park. That was the end of a great trip

The small town event drew several hundred visitors, and we were quite busy. I played a couple of sets inside the church/bookstore, and a a few outdoors. Joining me were the Banjo Doctor and his friend in authentic dress and instruments, with old time songs and acrefully researched arangements. He is a brilliant player - and treated us to his fretless 5 string hoop, and 5 string gourd banjos. We did a set together also, on each of Sat and Sun. Great fun. I was floored when I discovered this fine player, with obvious string professional music skill - was a medical doctor in his dayjob!! So was his friend! They were great fun, and top notch performers.

The local re-entactors and a few from across the state had a camp set up and did a few interesting demonstrations. They were a hit! And there were a few author/historians in presenting lectures/discussions on their new books. I'm afraid this year I didn't get to hear enough of them, though I'm sure they were darn good.

We had great weather. The mornings looked threatening, but we had two glorious afternoons. My wife and I quite enjoyed the weekend ... ran into an high school friend who I haven't seen for 30 years, and we hit it off with him and his wife. Got an invite to play a couple of gigs at nearby pubs/festivals next year - so all-in-all it was a great time. I'm already looking forward the 2002 Sperryville Civil War event.
