Lyr Req: O/ Ro/ Song of the Sea

Does anyone have any lyrics for this song? I've searched high and low in the DT and forum and couldn't find it anywhere. I heard it on a CD called "Voices of Celtic Women." It was done by Antionette McKenna. It's a beautiful song and I want to find the words. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I've found a couple of brief sound clips, and it's a quite different song, sung in English; the voice is a bit too processed to be easily understandable in low-grade audio.  I'd guess that it's a modern composition; does the CD credit a writer?

Would it be Óró mo bháidín? I beleive there are discissions on it on Mudcat. Printed sources abound if it is.

As I've already said, it appears to be a modern, English language song.  Probably hundreds of songs have Horo/ O Ro in the title or refrain, and very few of them will be this one.

Only one of them at most, I suspect, Malcolm.

Hi, Celtic Bard - I have that CD at home, but I'm not home. As I recall, it's a fairly well-known song. Give us a few phrases that you can pick out from the recording, and I'll betcha somebody will be able to find it for you. Titles alone are deceiving, but a few phrases from the song should do the trick for us.

Sorry, you guys. I was kind of non-specific. Yeah, now that I think about it, o/ ro/ IS used in a lot of songs. From what I'm able to make out the first verse goes something like this:

Out on the ocean deep, full sails, up, away/Wind upon my face, breeze bark(?) over me/Out on the rolling waves, full sails, up, away/Sun warm on my face, gold rays on the sea

Or something like that. Hope that helps. I'm counting on you guys.

I can hear the voice of Gordon Bok, singing it in my head. I think it's on a Bok-Muir-Trickett recording, but I'm on vacation and can't check it. Celtic Bard, if you don't get an answer by June 7, send me a personal message and remind me to look it up;.

The set on the sampler mentioned above was originally issued on "Sean Nua"'s 1993 album, The Open Door (Shanachie).  I can't find any reference to a recording by Bok et al., but maybe under a different title?  This snatch from an online sample:

O ro ro, O ro ro, O ro ro, o Seagulls flying high
Seals swim in the sea
[See sea] of the sea waves
Ride on past...

It doesn't strike me that it would be very difficult to transcribe from CD, though there might be some confusion over a few words in places, as with See sea of the sea or whatever it's supposed to be.  Again; who is credited as writer on the CD?

You got it, Malcolm! That's the one!

You're right, I can understand most of the words but some of the phrases are hard to figure out and it's been driving me absolutely nuts!

Oh and sorry. The writer given is Antoinette McKenna.

You're on the right track.

Joe, I'll PM you if no one posts it before you get back. In the meantime, enjoy your vacation.

It looks as if nobody else has recorded it, so only somebody who has McKenna's recording could help; why not post what you can make out from it in this thread, in case it jogs anyone's memory?  You did perfectly well with a transcription in the Blackwaterside thread -fewer mistakes than many people make with easier material.

Here are the complete lyrics, from the notes to Sean Nua's CD, The Open Door.

Out on the ocean deep
Full Sails up away
Wind upon my face
Spray sparkle over me...

Out on the rolling waves
Full sails up away
Sun warm on my face
Gold rays on the sea

Chorus:

Ó ró ró ó ó ró ró ó ó ró ró ó
Ó ró ró ó ó ró ró ó ó ró ró ó

Seagulls flying high
Seals swim in the sea
Sea sea of the sea
Waves ride on past...

Chorus:

White horse prance and plough,
Blue water swell and fall,
Sea sea of the sea
Waves ride on past...

Shore shore oh so far
Shake hands with the sea
Come come come closer
Home home we will be...

Chorus:

Out on the ocean deep
Full sails up away
Wind upon my face
Spray sparkle over me...

Out on the rolling waves
Full sails up away
Sun warm on my face
Gold rays on the sea...

Hope the page breaks and special characters turn out right.

Regards,
John
