Going To Arlington, VA!

I learned yesterday that I will have to be in Arlington, Virginia, from June 18 through June 22. Is there anybody out there? What kinds of cultural (i.e., folk) activities can I engage in during the evenings?

Nanny O'Brien's Pub has a cool session on Monday nights (Its in DC near the Uptown theatre or National Zoo). In Arlington, there is Ireland's Four Courts pub near the corner of Courthouse Rd and Wilson Blvd. ummmmm...you might also want to check out www.washingtonpost.com to see if there are any folk festivals going on.

I've been living in the DC area for 15 years -- it's a great music town for both players and listeners. Check out the Folklore Society of Greater Washington's website at http://www.fsgw.org/ for their calendar of events.

Will you have a car? Friday and Sunday nights there's contradancing to live music at a park about 10 minutes drive from Arlington. There's also the Birchmere, a concert venue for folk/blues/etc groups. Too much else to go into, but be sure to grab a copy of both Thursday's and Friday's Washington Post, Thursday for the community calendar and Friday for the Weekender.

The Birchmere has a Zydeco band playing the night you arrive. That could be fun. And if you can manage it, the (not folk!) Crash Test Dummies will be there on the evening of the 21st. I am not sure what they have been up to lately, but they were among my favorite pop groups a few years back.

I can't think of any 'Catters who are in Arlington anymore. (There was one a long time ago, Laura the Fiddler, AKA Laura O'Kelly who played with the Thistle Streetband at an Alexandria club called Ireland's Own. She gave an email address of: fiddle@celtic.com but I don't know if that is still current. (She posted all of this info on the 'Cat, folks. So I'm not betraying any secrets.) You might send her a note to see if she is still playing locally.

Hey, I'm vaguely in the neighborhood, and might be able to come up to Northern VA (I have a sis in Fairfax I can stay with...) - PM me and I'll see if we can get together! And heart surgery sounds like a whole lot of no fun, good luck with that!

Oh I don't know, Pat, I am going to Arlington to learn a new computer program developed by a Government contractor. Heart surgery sounds like an acceptable alternative.

I'll PM you, Mrrzy, probably tomorrow, it sounds like the boys are stirring around downstairs. We have a big day today with the concert and all. (See Tracking Sam Pirt)

Naemanson,

PM me. I just moved to Alexandria, and am poised for some folk singing. There should be a chanty sing at Cate's Bistro (upstairs) in Alexandria, VA on Tuesday 19th June, 8pm ... haven't hit this particular group since I was on leave from Kuwait over 14 months ago ... sort of a reunion (maybe no one will show up). Take the Metro to King Street and plan on having a beer or two!

Cheers, Brian

My trip has been canceled. The class is full. I am on a waiting list but it is unlikely I will be going soon.

But I can still get together with anyone doing anything up there about then, I had already prepped my sister for the idea of my staying with her...? Wotcha, if we can't meet up in Cville, maybe up there? (Wotcha and I play a lot of phone tag these days...) I may go check out that coffeehouse thing anyway... let me know, y'all!

Wotcha:

Is Cate's at the top (near the monument) or bottom (near the river) on King Street? I'll miss this trip but will get that way later this summer (mid-July).

Dan, do you mean where is Rare Olde Times as a philosophical statement or where is Rare Olde Times geographically? If you mean the former, we certainly can discuss it at length and determine if we are objectively or subjectively aligned. Otherwise, I got nutin for ya, twit.

Turns out Wotcha and Naemanson and I will all be trying to meet... I missed Wotcha on his tour through Cville, unfortunately, although we did at least speak. Am trying to get directions to Cate's, can anyone help with that?

Hey guys: paste this in your address box.

http://www.bitebybyte.com/cates.htm
to get a map.

Or do a www.mapquest.com for 715 King St. Alexandria, VA.

Cates is 7 blocks from the river or near the 'bottom' of King street.
I'm sorry, I'd join you but I'm booked tuesday night.

Yawl, a word, used in the south, that has nothing to do with sailing. Verrrryyyy interrresting.

Y'all is a contraction and pronouciation variant of 'You all'. In the same way that 'ketch' is what you do to the measles and 'jigger' is slang for a thing.

what about FAR and TAR? FAR is what you get when you strike a match and TAR is the round thing on each corner of your car.

Ah, yes, Far. I have an old bluegrass record with a song about the burning of Baltimore, where I thought the lyrics were Far, far, are heard the cries (which makes sense, except that it's Fire! Fire! I heard the cries...

And there was some hysterical commercial a while back, in a tire warehouse, and someone offcamera gives a Tarzan yell, so the customer says "Tarzan here?" and the salesman answers "Yeah! Racks & racks of'm!"
