In the song "The Lowlands, Low" (The Clancys) what is that boat loaded with? "....cowhides and wool and light cargo." Timmy

I searched under #286 and found 8 different versions of this song (It's #286 of the Child Ballads). I wonder if we have other songs with MORE versions.

Joe, I suspect that we have more versions of Ragle-Taggle Gypsies and theFalse Bride, but I'd hate to swear to it. If you want, I can check.

But we don't seem to have "Reggae Rover"--I think it was Celtic Stone's, but I'm not sure.

Joe, I'm not sure, that Child #286 and "Sailing in the Lowlands Low" (author: P.J. McCall, air: trad.) are more than superficially related.

Timmy, if the song you mean is the one starting "Dunmore we quitted, Michelmas gone by..." then the line you are asking for goes: "cowhides and woll and live(!) cargo" (source: J.N.Healy, Irish Ballds and songs of the sea). How about posting the complete lyrics?

"wool", not "woll"

Think I posted these in a thread some time ago.

Is this the same song as The Golden Trinity?

There once sailed a ship from the north country
The name of the ship was The Golden Trinity

I've heard it under other names, but the story line is the same. They get into battle with a Spanish ship; the cabin boy volunteers to swim under the Spanish ship and drill holes to sink her if the captain will let him marry the captain's daughter; the captain agrees; the boy sinks the Spanish ship as promised; the captain breaks his word and lets him drown.

Tim, I'm sure your "Golden Trinity" is the same as "Golden Vanity" and all the other versions of Child #286. I think maybe Timmy and Wolfgang are referring to another song with the name "Sailing in the Lowlands Low." Is that right, Wolfgang? Can your magic scanner scan us up a copy of your lyrics?

Yes, it is right, Joe; scanner's a bit less than magic, it's only worth using if the song has more than about 4 verses; I won't forget the request, but I haven't the book here today, and next time may be well after Christmas.

Martin's right, no need to do the work once more, click for Sailing for the Lowlands Low

Aha! Now we have the mystery sorted out! Now, does somebody have the tune for "Sailing for the Lowlands Low," and can we get Dick to promise to include it in the next edition of the database? Seems a shame to have this confusion come up again and again.
Of course, sometimes our confusion comes up with delightful results. Take a look at the "Rosin the Bow" and "Acres of Clams" threads that developed off a request from an entirely different song.

Interesting version. If I get the tune, I'll promise to include it in the next edition of the DT.

I'll see if I can find sheets for the PJ mcColl song and get them to Dick.

Regards - and happy Christmas (I can't bring my PC-ness to "Happy Holidays"!.
