Lyr Req: Bucketmouth/Bucket Mouth McGinty/McGuinty

Subject: Throw the cargo overboard save ' alcohol
From: GUEST,Jerry (MadSigntist@renet.com)

I'm desperately searching for lyrics. My grandfather used to sing this little song for my Father. My grandfather died when I was six months old. My father is turning 50 on the 28th. He has lost the lyrics to this song. What I know goes something like this...

Ol' Bucket Mouth McGinty (name may be wrong) he was quite a drinkin man... Captain of the steamer they called him Peter Pan... When ol mac was loaded you could hear him call... Save the women save the kids and save the alcohol!

Before ol mac would leave the port he'd call his crew aside... as he gave each man his orders his chest would swell with pride... then as he'd dismiss him he'd tell them one and all... throw the cargo overboard, but save the alcohol!

CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THE CORRECT LYRICS? I would be forever grateful.

I found this thread in the forum, but am confused as to whether Bucket Mouth is the same song as Booze Yacht.......I think not, but it's hard to tell. Nothing else on Google.

Bucket Mouth McGinty is referenced in the discussion, but I don't believe it is the same as Booze Yacht... thanks though!

Jerry, do you know about Mudcat membership, and do you know how to find a thread later on when you want to check back?

Reason I am asking is, it can take a long time before someone wanders in here who happens to know the piece you want, and spots the request. When you don't get an answer right away, the requestor needs to come back to the the thread and post in it to bounce it back onto the current day's thread list. But as a member you can "trace" the thread-- it's all in the Mudcat FAQ. Or you can just bookmark the thread from your browser and go to it anytime.

And if you should find the song anywhere else, I hope you will come back and post it right in this thread.

This one's a puzzler; it may be one of those unique family songs that we'll have to reconstruct. Any clues about the tune?

The reference to "Peter Pan" may help dating this one.

I certainly appreciate the help folks! The best information I can find is a reference to the song's title. Sorcha found it. it came from:

I doubt it was a family song... the only clue I have would be that my Grandfather would only sing it when he would be driving his boat. My Father was born in 1952, I am assuming my grandfather knew the song before that.

BUCKET MOUTH McGINTY

Bucketmouth McGinty was quite a drinking man.
He was skipper of the schooner they call the Peter Pan.
Whenever he got loaded, he would call the men aside

CHORUS: Save the kids and women first, then save the alcohol.

Each time they left the harbor, he would call the crew aside,
Give each man his orders—his chest would swell with pride—
And then as he'd dismiss them, he'd tell them one and all

One day the ship was rolling upon the stormy sea.
The waves were getting higher and the wind was making free.
McGinty told his crewmen "we're in for quite a squall

"I'm going to my cabin and pour myself a drink.
I don't give an awful damn if this tub should sink,
But if this thing should happen," he added with his drawl,

They rushed into his cabin in time to see him go.
As they gathered round him, he spoke with words so low:
"Just bury me at sea, boys. I hear the angels call."

Oh, whiskey got old Mac at last. It finally caused his death.
40 years before the mast without a sober breath.
He tripped upon a bottle and perished from the fall.
They couldn't save McGinty but they saved the alcohol.

McGinty's in the ocean with lots of sea above.
The mermaids follow him around, their hearts so full of love.
No matter how they smile at him, he can't hear them at all.
He just keeps yelling, "ring me out and save the alcohol."

WYSIWYG mentioned the time that could elapse before "...someone wanders in here..." Well, I just "wandered in," and remember that the chorus was not always the same. For example, after the verse that begins: One day the ship was rolling..., I remember the chorus being :"Throw the cargo overboard, but save the alcohol."

Another verse that I remember was missing from the WYSIWYG post:

At last the storm abated
And quiet reigned once more
When from McGinty's cabin
There came a drunken roar
The First Mate saw him stagger,
The Bos'n heard him call
Pick me up...etc.

I also remember the chorus after the verse that begins "We rushed into his cabin" as being:
Save the watch and save the chain
And save the alcohol.

If McGinty was the skipper, wouldn't he be behind the mast instead of before it?

Or maybe he was "forty years before the mast" and then he became a captain?

How realistic is that?

Am I over-analyzing?
