Would love to hear from some of you about favorite guitarists.

I'm sure we've had similar threads before but Chris Newman remains my favourite. Another favourite of mine: Paul Airy from the Bangor (N Wales) session - a complete unknown but the best accompaniest of Irish music in a session environment that I have ever met.

I know there are similar threads and the "What do u like" thread today is what got me to the point of asking. Glenda listed a lot of the groups we play with when I work with her for practice but I particularly like the above listed guitarists.

Thanks for answering. I see several I know and some I do not.

I saw Dean McGraw and Peter Ostroushko Saturday night. It was billed as their final concert together after 14 years. I had never seen McGraw before. The range of sounds he coaxed out of his acoustic guitar was quite incredible. Ostroushko is a superb mandolinist and fiddler.

Hard to argue with Ry Cooder but Rick Fielding and Tony Quarrington are also world class even if most of the world doesn't know it. They played together in Toronto tonight like they do most Mondays (except for next week which is a holiday) at Hugh's Room.

Even Duckboots, who has heard a bit of picking over the years, couldn't believe the sounds Rick and Tony got out of their guitars tonight when they played without the band. They seemed to be encouraging each other to new heights.

Martin Carthy has already had a mention - Paul Simon used his arrangement of Scarborough Fair, of course, and Bob Dylan based Hard Rain on hearing him sing Lord Randall, as well as Bob Dylan's dream on Lord Franklin.

Actually, I like Kevin McGrath's guitar playing; unconventional but nice. I also have a friend whose name is Alan. Before he got his new Yamaha, he had an old guitar which was coming to pieces. The face got lower and lower and so did the bridge, so the strings made a sort of "slappy" sound (before it got too bad). I really miss that one.

Cheers!

Well, as us classical guitarists go, Segovia was a groundbreaker but certainly not "head and shoulders" above the rest. That position is filled by John Williams, Pepe Romero, Julian Bream, and Andrew York. 9 out of 10 classical guitarists will tell you that Williams is the greatest ever (so far).

I forgot to mention Bernard Butler and Arty McGlynn!

May I recomend one of our local guitarists - Keith Hinchcliffe. He's done some wonderful arrangements of Celtic music. He gave a workshop for us a couple of years ago which was , unfortunately , badly attended. He managed to teach to everyone's level and my daughter came home and retuned all the guitars in the house.

Hendrix, Montgomery and Reinhardt are all solid; I haven't played them in a long time, though. Too busy working on the guys in paragraph 1.

Jose Feliciano--anybody remember him?? Classical influenced jazzy renditions of Pop Rock stuff. Light My Fire; California Dreamin'.

I think some of the folks nominated are excellent musicians who happen to be guitarists, but I'm not sure that makes them superior guitarists per se.

I should also, which is totally pointless but fun, say that I admire my friend Glenn Elfman (folk) who is connected with the Pistol River concerts in Oregon, and my very own side-man "Jammin' George" Miller (boogie; rag).

Actually Matt, there was a thread asking who the best guitarist liveing is on the Classical Guitar Forum and almost no one mentioned Williams (Canadians seemed to love Norbert Kraft though). I would agree that Williams has more technique than anyone recorded and perhaps ever. Still, I perfer David Russell to any other player. He's better than Pepe, Bream, and much better than York! You should check him out!
On another note about Williams, I've heard that he's now involved in an African ensemble. I'd be interested to hear that.

Matt, I've mentioned David Russell to you in the past I'm sure. He recorded a CD of celtic music for classical guitar. You should look into him, seriously! I'm sure Dr. Frank will tell you something about him too.
Norbert Kraft runs the NAXOS label and teaches at the Royal Conservitory in Canada (I think it's somewhere around Toronto). NAXOS is a discount label, so you could by one of his CDs for like $6 or $7. He's a great player. But to be honest, I don't agree with everything that was said in that discussion. He still might be worth looking into for the price of his CDs.

Eric Clapton, at least on the Layla album. Hendrix, who changed everything. Randy California, the 6 string genius in Spirit. Robby Kreiger, for taking slide guitar into so many places it had never been before. Peter Green, for creating Fleetwood's snaky sound. Robert Johnson, for teaching us that guitar is played with the soul and not just the fingers. Mark Knopfler, for those intricate streams of sparkling notes. Roger McGuinn, for taking an acoustic instrument into the jet stream. Sneaky Pete Kleinow, for channeling the jet stream into his pedal steel. Eddie Van Halen, for ripping through most of the existing sonic envelopes. Jerry Garcia, for making every solo a new exploration. Peter Buck, for sheer diversity of sound. Stevie Ray, for throwing a little Jimi, Freddy King, Johnny Winter, and a dash of everyone else into the blender and pouring out something brand new.

Lonesome Ej,

Stevie Ray has always been a problem for me. I've often thought that he was a Jimi, Albert King, JW clone. These guys were innovators. But then I listen to him again. Stevie had feel, he had soul, which is why I prefer Son House's (albeit not great) playing to say a Gary (how many blues notes can I fit in here?) Moore.

English Jon . . I'd second that Ralph Jordan suggestion (Ralphie of Mudcat) . . Are you familiar with his days with Eric??

Damn them guy, he's also possibly the best duet 'tina player I've heard . .

Was Pierre Bensusan mentioned somewhere up there too?

Matt, you are a reasonably bright young fella, so, I'll bet that when you have been around as long as I have, you will probably know almost as much as I do! BUT, you will have to get out of that ELO rut to expand! LOL

Look at this! Kendall is telling ME about expansion! Kendall, everyone knows you are very narrow-minded in your musical tastes...expansion is something you know very little about. As for knowing as much as you do, I may get there someday, but I hope to go I don't learn to hate as much as you do.

Gordon Quinton, I haven't heard that name in ages. He is quite good. I really liked his theme for "Land and Sea". How do you know his work? Are you a Newfoundlander?

If you are talking bluegrass, the best are Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Doc and Ricky Scaggs.

If you mean country and rock, the best are James Burton and Albert Lee.

and if you mean the blues, Eric Clapton is in a class by himself.

The late Merle Watson was the best I ever heard on slide. Bonnie Raitt is great as well.

I love so many of the previously named guitarist. Here's a few more ... Skip James (totally unique), Wes Montgomery (I can't believe he's unmentioned), Duck Baker (One of todays premier acoustic composer/performers), Jeff Beck ('Cuz We've Ended as Lovers'), Allan Holdsworth (also totally unique and unbelievable 'live'), John Scofield (Funky AND Soulful), and Steve Vai (Sure he's a shredder, but he can play beautiful ballads ... and I loved him with Zappa).

My favorites are mostly blind guys like
  • Blind Blake
  • Rev. Gary Davis
  • Willie McTell
  • Doc Watson
  • Riley Puckett
  • Merle Travis, who wasn't blind
  • Blind Boy Fuller
  • and a modern guy who isn't blind at all, Pat Donohue
  • and another modern guy who definitely isn't blind, Stephen Bennet
I guess that about does it.

Thanks Flatop and steve.

Since this is for "favourite" guitarists, rather than "best" guitarists, I can leave out Tuck Andress, and probably 25 completely anonymous pickers who got married, had kids, and stayed local.

Favourites? Joseph Spence, Estil C Ball, Tony Quarrington, Eldon Shamblin, Bob Dylan, Charlie waller, Doc Watson.

And the great Alton Delmore.

B. King, and a certain hawaiian man I once knew.
