English Mother. Bits of Russian, Welsh and, way back, some Irish. Yet I love all things Scottish. My favourite tipple - Single malts (most types). Favourite bands - Runrig, Battlefield. I find Scottish 'sessions' far more enjoyable than Irish or English. Scottish ceilidh bands are the best in the world. Just spent a weekend in Edinburgh and instantly fell in love with the city, people, culture, food. EVERYTHING. Felt really sorry, and for some reason a little ashamed, that a lot of the streets were named ater English kings, queens and statesmen. C'mon Edinburgh, when the parliament building is done have a purge and get rid of all traces of collonianism! Question is - before the borders are closed and Scotland becomes completely independant (grin) - how can I get citizenship? Cheers Dave the McGnome |

The Irish in England have a tendance to welcome all who want to be Irish - they just get a little confused that you want to hang onto your own culture. I think we should be as obliging as well. One word of warning - some groups of exiled scots can be a little intense about it all. If you want I'ld adopt you as an honoury member of my family ( Scots, Irish, a wee bit in English,and a interesting historical trace of French), then you should have some chance come independence. At 10 o'clock precisely, the landlord switched off the lights from behind the bar and exited through a rear door, leaving us and few other customers in pitch darkness!!! We found our way to the door by dint of me kicking aside every table and chair I walked into and finally got out reasonably intact. So much for Scottish hospitality thought I - and my father-in-law's from Leith! Think I'll stick to Yorkshire where complete strangers have been known to buy me a drink for no particular reason - become a Tyke - you know it makes sense (unless you're from the wrong side of the Pennines1) |

These are people who were born and raised elsewhere, but are attracted by the culture, or some facet of it, or some myth about it, or some misconception of it. Their attempts to adopt WV can be flattering, but they can also be amusing, and sometimes downright annoying. There might be Scots who feel the same way about Scottish wannabes. |

I've been back since, in fact last year I was in Portobello which you probably know well. I visited a few fine drinking establishments and was pleased to see that the 10 o'clock drinking up time is now a thing of the past. I was also impressed with the hospitality - people in Edinburgh couldn't do enough for my wheelchair bound mother-in-law eg. when we went to see the Scottish crown jewels in Edinburgh castle we had a warden allocated to help us and bypassed all the usual queues! Had a good time and will no doubt be back to sample a few malts that I didn't get round to last time! My father-in-law, who was brought up in the tenements around Leith docks, could not believe how gentrified the area has become - he was only sorry that the kipper-smoking sheds are now a thing of the past! |

Some of the words are spreading, however. They translated taking a kip (nap), and wallies (false teeth) but these are entering the language in the States and Canada. It takes a while to get the ear adjusted to the rhythm and pronounciation. A few weeks over a bottle in Glasgow would be needed before all (much?) of it became intelligible. |

I'm no longer involved, but in my wild and foolish youth, I was a member of that political organisation. One of the members of our local branch was the proprietor of a Chinese restaurant. I have many criticisms of many aspects of SNP policy (with which I won't bore you) but I could never fault their willingness to welcome anyone into the party (in my experience). Me Mum just returned from Scotland yesterday, gushing about how wonderful is the land of her parents. There for Robert the Bruce's birthday too.
