Watch out for Grant Baynham

GRANT BAYNHAM is the funniest songwriter and best accoustic guitarist I know.... and yet next to nobody I talk to has heard of him, never mind seen him.
We booked him for our club at Glenfarg several years ago and he took the place by storm.
We booked him for our festival the following year and he took the place by storm.
We have had him back each year since and the club is bulging at the seams when he arrives.
His guitar playing, be it jazz, classical, ragtime or traditional leaves you staring in stunned amazement.
His songs are sooooo funny you will beg him to stop singing to allow your ribs and tear ducts to recover.
You will ache with the laughter for days.
You will miss half the humour in each song... partly because there is so much of it crammed into every line and partly because you will still be roaring with laughter from the last line.

If you enjoy humour and guitar playing at its very best then TRACK THIS MAN DOWN.
He used to work with Esther Ranson on the BBC's 'That's Life' but don't let that put you off.

PS I'm not related to Grant and I'm not on commision for the sale of his new album...I'm just a fan.

I will concur wholeheartedky with everything Dunc says. Grant's guitar playing really is amazing, and he is just the funniest songwriter in the world. I would go so far as to say that he is what Tom Lehrer could have become with a little practice. (Except Tom Lehrer played piano ...........)

I stole Grant's "Wine Song" and have performed it at every opportunity in the States. Ir took me six weeks to get it down, but the efffort was worth it. WIsh he would tour over here.

Patrish is right, Dunc, the link doesn't work. Maybe he chose another URL?

Saw him a few years ago at Chester Folk Festival - Fantastic. He used to work with Ester Ransen on "Thats Life", but I think he should be fogiven for that. Anyone know the lyrics to a song he sang "Loius' going to the chair"? Hilarious if only I could remember it

Dreary cabaret act, mentioned by Half Man Half Biscuit in 'Let's not'

Glenfarg??? Wow, what a memory - do you still have the festival there? I used to have to roadie my wife up there to appear most years. Wasn't there a brilliant songwriter in those parts who specialised in writing about his time driving steam railway engines? Dave somebody?

I would hazard a guess that Dave Goulder is the man you are thinking of Ian.

Jim Cheydi, please expand on your cryptic post. Are you saying that in your opinion, Grant Baynham is a "dreary cabaret act"? And who or what is Half man Half Biscuit and what is "Let's Not"?

That is indeed my opinion Murray. I first heard of him when he was mentioned in the song 'Let's Not' by the excellent Half Man Half Biscuit on the album 'McIntyre, Treadmore and Davitt'

IanB, I'd second the suggestion that it's Dave Goulder you're thinking of. He actually lives up near Lairg in Sutherland. His passion for railways runs deep; only person I know with a signalbox in their garden!

Dunc, are you on the committee for the Glenfarg Festival? If so, please have words with the hotelier. If he doesn't change his attitude to the sessions then Dave Goulder is among the many who won't be back!

Grant Baynham rocks! Saw him (last year?) when he was at Glenfarg Festival.

A few years ago, when Grant Baynham started doing folk festivals, I met him a couple of times.

The first time, was in a pub where a few of us were sat having a quiet(ish) song/tune session. Grant walked in, asked if he could join us, and not only contributed to everything that was played/sung, but took it to places it had never been before. I had the 'dubious' pleasure of being accompanied by him. I say dubious, not because it was unpleasant, anything but, but because his accompaniment had me drooling so much I just wanted to sit in the corner and listen to it. The breaks between verses seemed to get longer and longer while I scraped my chin off the floor, and tried to get my brain back in gear for the next verse.

A few weeks later, we met again, at another festival. He stopped, chatted for a bit, then went off and demolished another session.

Not only is he an excellent songwriter, incredibly funny performer, and superb guitarist, he's a nice fella too.

Some people make you sick!!!!! :-)

Brian

I have to admit the web address www.grantbaynham.com is not working although that is the address given on Grant's new CD cover.
The Folk Feast is still going strong at Glenfarg.
April saw the 22nd festival.
I also know where you are coming from re the hotelier. It is the biggest earner of the year for him, but he still values the customers he looks upon as his regulars more highly than the folk festival punters who come on mass every April.
It is sad that we only need the use of the hotel for one weekend in every 52 and he can't make allowances.
It is fair to say though, that most folk who attend the festival still have a great time and keep on coming back, year after year.. despite a grumpy hotelier.

Jim Cheydi, I am left shaking my head in puzzlement over how anyone who had heard him could possibly describe Grant as a "dreary cabaret act". Maybe you are confusing him with somebody else ?

With regard to Dave G and dry-stane dykes, do I not recall that it was he who is alleged to have made the classic one-line response to a lady singer of doubtful persuasion, when she asked 'Hi, Dave, still doing dykes?' Apparently he replied - 'aye - are you?'

He's a hit with the audience, but I can't understand 80% of what he sings. Sad, because if he'd slow down a bit, more people could understand him.
