Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27?

Subject: Music in Southern Maine/NH - July 21-27?
From: GUEST,emily b

I'm on my way to Maine at the end of the week and am curious if there will be any music going on in the Portland area (I'll be west of there in Limerick) or Portsmouth. I'll be a few days in the Bath area on the 21st and 22nd.

I know Kendall is in Portland and someone, maybe Naemanson in Bath? It would be fun to meet some northern mudcatters and check out the folk scene. 'Catter Bill Galbraith is coming with me. We're half of a mostly Celtic band here in Houston.

I just remembered the What' On thread and see a few entries by Kendall and Naemanson. Will miss most of them.

Actually if anyone has any advice as to places to eat, or things to see, I'd be grateful for that info too. I've been to Maine a lot but still don't know it all that well.

Thanks for any info.

Emily

Hi bbc, it'd be a treat to see you both again & so soon along with meeting emily b. what treats. I'll follow this thread to see how plans shape up & hope that the timing will work with a maybe visit from Big Mick (sorry Mick cat's out of the bag now you'll have to come). Maybe Portsmouth (Fri. night session?) would be a good general meeting & central gound for getting together? It would be a blast if all the coastal Maine-ei-axes & the those from coastal Cow-Hampshire were to make it there. Waiting on the sidelines with glee, Barry

The Press Room Session on the 27th will be without the Angel Band and could use some beefing up. I will be there with bbc and Duane. I hope Emily and Bill Galbraith can make it. If Big Mick and Barry Finn will be there then I guess we can expect Animaterrra to be there. Woo-eee, s'gonna be a good'un!

Let me see if I can get Charley Noble and some more of the Roll & Go gang there too.

By the way, Emily and bbc, Roll & Go will be performing at the Wells Historical Society on Wednesday, July 25. The Historical Society is headquartered on Route One in Wells next door to the Subway restaurant and across the street from the Shaw's supermarket.

Wow! Meeting everyone on the 27th sounds great. Is the Press Room in Portsmouth? I must admit I got a bit lost in all the messages, not to mention the mudcat names. I need to look at a map and see how far away I'll be. Sounds like a gathering not to be missed. Maybe I can get my brother-in-law to come along too. Awesome guitarist and he does some singing too.

If there are any details, I can be reached until Friday at emily_blunck@oxy.com.

Thanks all. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

OK, Barry.........you owe me a Guinness............LOL. Yes, I may indeed be staying in the Boston area for about 10 days beginning Monday, the 23rd. If it is to be, I will be staying in Brockton. I will know in a day or so if I am going. I will be on assignment and won't know my itinerary until I get there. I will let you know as I know. I certainly hope it works out so that I can be there on Friday for the gathering. I would love to see my FSGW buddies, as well as my friends that I have never met. And one thing for sure about Boston.........I can get a proper jar of the luscious, creamy, Guinness......otherwise known as the vile, dark stuff.

All the best,

Mick

You can get one of those at the Press Room too, Mick. Liam's Brother drove all the way up here from NYC once, and went home the same night. Of course, he may have a stronger constitution than you, and I don't mean to make you feel like a wuss or anything. I love you even if it's too difficult for you to make it.

Then there was Barry who drove from Derry, NH to Mystic, CT, sang for half the night and then drove home again to drop off his kid. He was going to turn around and go back to Mystic but his family hog tied him and put him to bed. This was only a couple of months after his transplant. Of course, I understand if you may not be as manly as Barry... *grin*

I will do all I can to be there on Friday night, but it will have to do with my schedule on the assignment..........Finn..........grumble, mutter, sputtle, sputter......hhhhhhmmmmmmmppppppphhhhhhhh!!!!!

Hey, prolly time to post directions to the Press Room on this thread. Everyone please be advised to get there between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. The session lasts until around 9 p.m. It's in the back of the room in a usually crowded pub and situated in between the kitchen and the waitresses who are trying valiantly to save everyone from dying of thirst.

The address is 77 Daniel Street and it is located between the Piscataqua River (and the bridge to Maine) and Market Square, the heart of downtown. It's across the street from the Post Office/Federal Building. Daniel St. (which becomes Congress St. which becomes Islington St. in not too many blocks) is one way, as is State St. and Congress St. Parking either involves going around in circles for awhile looking for an available spot or taking a berth at the Parking Garage (3 blocks away). The phone number is 431-5186.

Oh, Daniel St. is Rte 1 south and State St. is Rte 1 north, if that helps clarify anything.

If anyone needs answers, ask questions! Ask questions!

It would be great to get directions but at least a city and street address. I'm assuming Portsmouth but may be wrong.

I found a Press Room Restaurant at 77 Daniel St. Is this correct? I'm sure I could find it on my own but directions from I-95 would be appreciated.

I'll be off of internet access by the morning of the 20th.

Thanks and Bill and I look forward to meeting everyone. We don't have mudcat t-shirts so look out for strangers with a small guitar.

Adapted from Yahoo driving directions:

Press Room
77 Daniel St, Portsmouth, NH 03801
(603) 431-5186

From I95 North
Take exit number 7, towards PORTSMOUTH/NEWINGTON. (0.2 miles)
Turn RIGHT onto MARKET ST. (0.2 miles)
MARKET ST becomes MARKET ST. 0.7 miles)
You'll come to a stop sign. Right after the stop, turn LEFT onto BOW ST. (0.1 miles)
Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto CHAPEL ST. (0.1 miles)
Turn RIGHT onto DANIEL ST.

Oh, and the rest of the driving directions:

Drive around in circles, taking left turns and going past the Press Room on your left every so often.
Watch for touristy-looking people and follow them until they get into a car.
Once they vacate parking spot, pull in.
Try to make sure this is somewhere in Portsmouth. The malls 5 miles out of town are too far to walk from, even if it IS easy to find parking.

BTW, you can go around in circles looking for parking by making either left turns or right turns. Daniel St. South, right on Penhallow, right on Bow, right on Chapel , right again on Daniel Street.

OR Daniel St. South, through Market Square, left on the alley between the church and Eagle Photo, through next cross street, left on State St. next to the old Custom House, State St. to just before the bridge to Maine, left over to Daniel St. south and start over again.

Despite our political predilections, 'Mudge and I usually do the right hand turn loop.

Charlie, I swiped the directions from Yahoo. If they were mine, they'd look something like "when you get off 95, turn right onto whatever that streed was, don't turn right at the orange blinking light. When you get to the stop sign and there's a road down sort of a hill on your left, go there..." I thought Yahoo was better.

Still, it's best to look at a map, because I've found Yahoo messes up sometimes.

Mick, if you see this, I work not all that far from Brockton (well, I'm a long distance driver so what do I know about time & milage) & could swing an early day, come grab you, get my wife & it's off to Portsmouth. The next day we'll be heading towards Cape Cod for our annual 100+ (I come from a long line of rabbits) family picnic, passing not to far from Brockton on the way there, so what's it gonna be, big boy?. Wuss warning, once you close the car door, it's non stop singing till the last man/woman drops & I hold a pretty mean record now with my new parts & all.

Sorry Naemanson, we take no prisoners (heh, heh), prepare to kill the throat or die. Either way we can have a good chuckle & go on to sing a lament over your loss. You can always opt for playing it safe & buy the rounds (yuck, yuck).

Hey Kendall, what'd thunk bout coming?

I see what you mean Barry about the 'catters gathering. Looking forward to meeting some of the "names -to me -only".

I'm just back from Irish week in the Catskills and in sleep depravation mode anyway so finally checked out the Boston singer's session on Wed. in Paddy Burke's Pub near North Station. Is it usually as good as that Barry? 'course having Roisin White there was a treat. Recommended tonic for all visiting insomniacs (did't start 'till close to 10).

See ya at the Press Rm. Advance warning- hide when I try one of my newly learned Irish songs- more enthusiasm than melody some times!

Hey al, why did you pick such an archaic thread? If you want to keep up with whats going on here, drop into the SINSULL song circle threads or those about the monthly shanty/foebitter sessions at the Press Room (NH).

And look for an upcoming thread on the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival - Tom

The PMFF will be on Sept 24 and 25. But on your way back from Salem, if you're travelling on a Friday, you might want to stop in at one of the weekly sessions at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH. We start around 4:30 and go till 9:00. Post here if you want more details - Tom
