Does anyone know the Maddy Prior song used in the excellent John Pilger programme on globalisation shown on UK terrestrial TV last night. Has she released it on any of her albums?

regretably not and neither Pilgers site nor Carlton give it a credit.

I would like to know as well as it was a powerful lyric

Good program too!

The song is called Honest Work, and is in the mudcat database. It is on one of Maddy Prior's albums, but off hand, I can't remember which one. I thought the documentary was great as well. We need more of that kind of thing on TV. I'm half way through reading Naomi Klein's No Logo which covers the same terrain. I suppose this subject should have it's own thread though.

Can be found on "flesh and blood"

powerful program, the dichotomy (however) is do you refuse to buy the designer labels because of slave labour and in so doing take away their ability to earn a living?

cheers

Okthen you let the producers know that you want their workers to have proper conditions and pay, is that to much to ask?
I just watched the video of the program and my blood is boiling. the men from IMF, World Bank and our own Blair are just so arrogant and dismissive. Did you understand the its good to be in debt idea put forward by one of those guys?

Martina and okthen - many thanks!
And, for those who missed the programme, check out the link that Roger's given. Pilger is an exasperating but wonderfully honest journalist.
Towards the end there was some selective editing which detracted a tad from its objectivity - but the basic message was unassailable however, and there was a wonderful moment when Pilger put the deputy director of the World Bank right on the spot.
The way the guy went from smarmy charm to furious blinking and a clear inability to hide his anger and embarrassment at being asked straight questions about supporting dictatorships was a classic piece of TV.
And the good thing was, it was on ITV at a reasonable hour, so plenty of people could have seen it and maybe made to think. One can only hope.

Most of the time there is going to be some fair trade operation, co-ops and so forth, who are producing the same kind of stuff, but made and processed by people who are being given fair conditions.

By buying from the exploiters in effect you are discriminating against the fair trade people.

There's no perfect answer - but in a way it's analogous to supporting a strike, even though you may know that the blacklegs are likely to be desperate people who didn't feel they had an alternative to scabbing.

Solidarity for ever.

Gervaise, how do you find Pilger "exasperating"??

(Though I have to say I find his written journalism more consistent than his TV stuff, where I agree he sometimes "cuts corners".)

He did a fine programme on Iraq a while back, too.

I'd recommend his book "Hidden Agendas" to anyone who can find a copy.

I was impressed that the TV channel had the guts to show a program that showed one of its advertisers in a bad light
I have a copy of Hidden Agendas and really recommend it
