Hello,

I like the categories in Rise Up Singing, like Love, Work, Mountain Voices, etc... Have any favorite songs of Hope?

I'm rather fond of When the ship comes In.

Anglo, were you at Old Songs this year when Artisan sang Mary Ellen Carter? It made that song fresh and new for me once more- I was positioned so I could watch the audience- the fervor and passion in their faces told such a story of the lives we've all lived since we first heard Stan sing it!
This is a good topic, MichaelAnthony- I'll have to think about it!

Animaterra, re Artisan performing Mary Ellen Carter, no I missed that, (maybe wished I hadn't, they're fine singers but I don't always go for their songs) - I'm glad people are still doing it. I was singing in Vermont on the night Stan died and the only song of his I really knew was Barrett's Privateers which hardly makes an obit. I went out and learned Mary Ellen Carter and sang it at Mystic Seaport later that month.

Subject: Lyr Add: ONE WORLD
From: ScottyG

This has been my favorite inspirational song ever since I sang it as my audition piece for the choral group I sang with in high school. I don't recall who wrote the words and music.

One World

One world built on a firm foundation
Built on a firm foundation of peace
What a wondrous sight, freedom's flame alight
In a world where war shall cease
One world built on love and peace

When God smiled, bright sunlight flooded hills and planes
Songbirds filled green valleys with their glad refrains
All things God created, His great love to share
Now let men and nations join and shout it everywhere!

One world built on a firm foundation
One world no longer cursed by war
Let no mortal man change the master plan
One great world at peace once more

One world....one world....one world, at peace forever more!

If in the dusk of the twilight
Dim be the regions afar
Doth not the deepening darkness
Brighten the glimmering star?

Whispering Hope. Still one of my favorites.

So I'll go on my weary way to the end of my day
For I know that my goal is in sight
Through the darkness I see- now so much brighter to me-
At the end of my road is a light.

He'll Welcome Me Home

If we're going into specifics, and especially if the specific is the island of Ireland, then:

Ron Kavanah's "Reconcilliation"

Colum Sand's "Throw the ball against the wall" (may not be the actual title).

Personally songs which just say how wonderful God's earth is (such as "Glad that I live am I"; sorry, Ian C) are more likely to induce depair than hope in me; if there's any hope to be had it has to come from our efforts to make something out of this (man-made) mess in which we find ourselves.

"Everything I Need" where he sings about having nothing, then "But I'm still climbing up the mountainside, Don't count me out, Long as I got my heart and soul I got everything, I got everything I need, Everything I need.

Then "A Better Man": I'm gonna make my world a better place, I'm gonna keep that smile upon my face, I'm gonna teach myself how to understand, I'm gonna make myself a better man.

Great CD. Sharon

From: Brian Hoskin

Nina Simone singing 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to be Free.'

And I wish I knew how
It would feel to be free
I wish that I could break
All the chains holding me
I wish I could say
All the things that I'd like to say
Say 'em loud say 'em clear
For the whole round world to hear
I wish I could share
All the love that's in my heart
Remove every doubt
It keeps us apart
And I wish you could know
What it means to be me
Then you'd see and agree
Every man should be free

I wish I could live

Like I'm longin' to live
I wish I could give
What I'm longin' to give
And I wish I could do
All the things I'd like to do
You know they'll still miss part of you
Yes Sir...
And I'm way way over due

I wish I could be like a bird up in the sky
How sweet it would be
If I found out I could fly
So long to my song
And look down upon the sea
And I sing because I know
I would see you
I sing because I know
I would see you
And I sing because I know
I would see you
To be free Yea

Art, How is Cocaine a song of hope? I love the song, I perform it regularly, but, a song of hope it is not. Depending on which version you listen to the singer/addict gets shot or at least attacked with a frying pan by his girl friend, harassed by the cops, violently ill, dumped, warned that it will kill him , but, the doc won't say when, winds up on the corner with his money for his room and board gone, and/or finally laid 6 feet under the ground after that damned cocaine gets all around his brain. Unless you want to follow it with Lay My Burden Down, Cross The River Jordan , or Soon My Work Will All Be Done it is not a happy piece. "Take a Whiff on me" is at least fun and nieve enough to possibly hold some promise of false hope.

When You Walk Through a Storm
hold your head up high
and don't be afraid of the dark
at the end of the storm is a golden sky
and the sweet silver song of a lark!

Walk on through the wind,
walk on through the rain,
though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on! Walk on!
With hope in your heart
and you'll Never Walk Alone!

you'll never walk alone"

Learned that in the school choir at age thirteen. It's kept me alive so far...

And my own song Slow Now:

I'm movin' Slow Now
Takin' my time...
And my heart's so easy
'Cause if it don't rhyme
it's still got rythmn!

I've seen the stars at night, now
far from the city lights
And my heart's so easy
'cause I can take a mind-flight
See them dusted against the night sky!

::chorus::--
And I'm letting the message fly!
That sometimes things unseen
Move us to a yearnin', love,
and wake us to the dream
We've all been dreamin'...

I'm movin' Slow Now
Takin' my time
And my heart's so easy
Now that I can see
That I was blind

I'm moving Slow Now,
Takin' my time...
Oh. my heart's so easy, love,
Now that I have seen
Sweet Love refined...

::chorus::

I'm movin' slow now
Takin' my time...
And my heart's so easy
'Cause if it don't rhyme
it's still got rythmn!

Just felt the need to refresh/ressurect this thread. I would add:
"God Bless the Grass" Malvina Reynolds
"The Great Storm is Over" Bob Franke
"Spirit Song" by Bill Staines - heard him do it in concert a few months ago in Ohio and the goose bumps have only started to subside - and incredible song.
"Canto De Esperanza" - an hispanic hymn that is in some of the newer hymnals.

In these days of political/cultural/economic unrest, it's easy to be cynical, much harder to raise a song of faith and trust in the future.

We shall overcome (I actually think that song has changed the world.)
One by Steeleye Spam with a changing chorus, last one being, "All the good times of old England, In old England very good times" -- who knows the name?
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

A hymn, 'Blessed Quietness'

Blessed quietness, holy quietness
Such assurance in my soul
On the stormy sea, speaking peace to me
How the billows cease to roll.

and another song I've heard on the folk circuit, possibly sung by Dave & Anni, the chorus of which is:-

Row on, row on another day
Shall see a brighter light
Ply, ply the oars and pull away
There's dawn beyond the night

Hope I've got it right, nevertheless, its a lovely song with a great chorus

Andy

From: HipflaskAndy

With apologies if I've not remembered the lyric exactly....
Not just the lyric - but a beautiful melody this one has too!

SOMEWHERE ALONG THE ROAD (Rick Kemp)

Somewhere along the road, someone waits for me
Beyond these present storms that blow waiting patiently
No secrets held in an open heart
A spirit that soars on the mountains
Somewhere along the road, someone waits for me

Somehow a guiding light always shows the way
To those that lose their way by night searching for the day
A day away from happiness
Tomorrow will bring a new sunrise
Somewhere along the road, someone waits for me

Sometime when winds are still – unexpectedly
Perhaps beyond this silent hill, a voice will call to me
Raise your eyes to see my world
Raise your voice and sing out
Somewhere along the road, someone waits for me

Subject: Lyr Add: THE GOODNIGHT SONG (Jim Boyes)
From: JennyO

Here's a song I love. It's sung here in Oz by The Wheeze and Suck Band.

THE GOODNIGHT SONG - Jim Boyes

Chorus (after each verse):
So goodnight my friends as the dawn comes pale
And the Eastern wind brings the threat of gale
Keep a hold on hope through the darkest vale
And we'll meet further on down the road

I have travelled far from this island strand
From the icy wastes to the burning sand
Ploughed the raging sea, seen the verdant land
Been at home in a place far away

Many differences but much the same
Though the ways are strange and have different names
But a friendly face breaks a thousand chains
And a smile breaks the lock on the door

We have joined in song, laughed a night away
Swapped out tales of woe, kept the clouds at bay
In the morning clear will be on our way
But we'll meet further on down the road

So let's drink a health to good times gone by
When our spirits soared and we touched the sky
And we'll bid farewell but not goodbye
And we'll meet further on down the road

Chorus:
So goodnight my friends as the dawn comes pale
And the Eastern wind brings the threat of gales
Keep a hold on hope through the darkest vale
And we'll meet further on down the road
(repeat last two lines)

Too many to pin one down, but I always liked "The Marvelous Toy," by Tom Paxton. When I look in my grandson's eyes as he hears it, I feel the sense of hope that each generation of children brings to the world. Innocence, however fragile and fleeting, is a human treasure.

You'll think, I'm nuts because I don't understand a word of it but the song is called "Have Hope" by Jennifer Kreisberg.
Sometimes, the words aren't necessary.

Well, without trying to stumble into a nother Dylan debate, I DO think the When the Ship comes in is Hopeful. ...

The song is hopeful from the point of view of those who have been oppressed. It's a David and Goliath sort of thing, from my take on it.

For me it has to be "Every December Sky" by Beth Nielsen Chapman.
There's a Light" from the same album also fits the bill, as does "Sand and Water".
Tommy Sands "We Will Rise again" would also be on my list, as would athie Ryan's version of "The Parting Glass."

As I continue to pile up birthdays (70 + ), I think I like the chorus to "The 200 Year Old Alcoholic":

'It's never too late to start living,
To get out and have some fun.
The sun will be just as shiney in the morning
As the first day the world was born.'

Here's a toast to John BarleyCorn as well.
