Here they are as sung by the Clancy's with Cherish the Ladies on a recent CD(the words are slightly different from the DT and there are two different tune patterns, I'll leave it to you to figure out which fits with the rest of the verses):

  A D E
I'm a freeborn man of the travelling people
D A
Got no fixed abode with nomads I have wandered.
E A D A
Country lanes and byways were always my way.
D A D G A
I never fancied being numbered.

A D E
Oh we knew the woods and the resting places,
E D A
And the small birds sang when winter days were o-ver,
E A D
Then we'd pack our load and be on the road
A D A D G A
Those were good old days for a rover.

The best version is probably by The Dubliners.

Dubliners - pah! Not a patch on MacColl himself . .

(This is yet another Radio Ballad song, isn't it?)

Yes, George. It's called "Freeborn Man" on "The Travelling People". Nice review at MusTrad here.

I agree with you about the original being better than The Dubliners' version. Personally, I think The Dubliners murdered it (though perhaps not so badly as the genocide they've done on other songs like "Threescore and Ten")

Cheers!
