Hey! "The Songcatcher" (no relation to the movie of the same name, I don't think) is a really good read.I liked it a great deal anyway. Sort of an Appalachian/murder ballad/multiple timeframe/ mystery. It's still hardbound, so out of my buying league, but libraries have it. I've liked a lot of her things, many of which have titles that refer to mountain music.

Yeah, she's good, and "Songcatcher" is one of her better "Appalachian" ones. She's got a funny series, too, with Elizabeth MacPherson as her Scottish heroine, pretty good also. Ms. McCrumb apparently is a big fan of old-time and old country music.

I'll have to look for the new one. Still really love "Bimbos of the Death Sun."

Bimbos Of The Death Sun and Zombies Of The Gene Pool are two of my favorites.

On the mend from bypass surgery and looking for ways to pass a little time, a visit to the local library turned up several books in Sharyn McCrumbs ballad novel series. I am a bit surprised at the virtual lack of interest in this series on Mudcat. She knows first hand and appreciates traditional mountain culture and weaves a specific ballad or song into the theme of each of these books. Have yet to read the novels about Frankie Silver and Tom Dooley but hope to get to them soon.

Along similar lines Charles Vess's graphic novels based on traditional ballads have been put in one volume. I do not think that this was ever successful commercial enterprise but has been of interest to a few folk.

Here is a link to a page about the ballad novels if anyone cares.

The scebe where the yankee lady gives a kid a quarter for every story he tells her is a scream -- he gives her some corkers.

I LOVED the Ballad of Frankie Silver! Didn't know about some of the others, though she is one of my favs. Time to go find some of those.

Thanks and good healing to you,

kat

Just found a copy of Songcatcher on paperbackswap. Looking at the other book synopses, I see I did read a few of the others, years ago and remember loving them, too. Thanks for the reminder!
