Lyr /Chords: Gunslinger (from The Limeliters)

Subject: western spoof/parady: 'gunslinger'
From: BK

Apparently not in database; The Limelighters sang this great spoof abt the "psychological" turn some Western movies had taken; ie, the idea was something like "no such thing as a bad cowpoke, only a misunderstood one."

Lines included:

"when you were a child did the Cheyenne & Sioux/

refuse to play nicely with you?/

did ya come from a broken / home on the range?"

"you've got a recurrent dream of yer Ma/

& that dream of yer Ma will inhibit yer draw"

I'll bet some 'catter knows the words or where to find them.

Got a Cowboy/Western song gig upcoming in September, looking for ideas. Thought this might make good comic relief. Any other good ideas??

Cheers, BK

From: GUEST

I hate HTML sometimes...

Try this:

Two Gunslingers
Written by: Tom Petty

Two gunslingers walked out in the street and one said "I don't wanna fight no more."
And the other gunslinger thought about it and said, "Yeh, what are we fighting for?"

(Chorus)
I'm takin' control of my life, I'm takin' control of my life
I'm takin' control of my life right now, oh yeah

Well the crowd that assembled for the gun fight
Were let down, everyone hissed and booed
And a stranger told his Mrs., "That's the last one of those gunfights
You're ever gonna drag me to."

(Chorus)

Well the two gunslingers went ridin' out of town and Were never heard from no more
And there ain't been a gunfight for a long time Maybe never, but nobody knows for sure

(Chorus)

I know it's a thread creep, but have to put a word in for the poem "Gunslinger" by the late Ed Dorn. It's been a long time since I read it, last time I tried, the library didn't have a copy, could be a while before I read it again.

From: Mad4Mud

Hi, it's me Guest,Karen but at home I've just recently become Mad4Mud. Anyway I promised I'd listen to the CD when I got home from work and, wouldn't you know it?, I forgot I lent it to my brother. So from memory I'll give you what I know. I am a little unsure about the order of the verses but maybe someone else can tell if they're out of order. Here goes:

GUNSLINGER (....at least what I can remember!)

Gunslinger...
Gunslinger...
Gunslinger...
Gunslinger!

Gunslinger, gunslinger,
Why you act so long?
When you were a child did the Cheyenne and Sioux,
Refuse to play nicely with you?
Did you always feel you didn't belong?
Gunslinger!

You've killed one hundred and thirty men, old buddy.
[Gunslinger, gunslinger]
And now [and now] you wanna settle down.
But other gunslingers are a-gunnin' for you,
And a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, old buddy.
[Old buddy, old buddy]

Yippee-i-ay,
Yippee-i-oh.

Gunslinger, gunslinger,
Why you act so strange?
When you were a child were you forced to compete,
With brothers that you never could beat?
Did you come from a broken 'Home on the Range'?
Old buddy!

Don't wear your guns in town tonight, Gunslinger.
[Gunslinger, gunslinger]
Last night [last night] you cried out 'Mommy dear!'
You've got a recurrent dream in your craw,
And that dream of your ma will inhibit your draw, old buddy.
[Old buddy, old buddy]

Yippee-i-ay,
Yippee-i-oh.

Gunslinger, gunslinger,
Please take my advice.
You know in your mind that you're plumb insecure,
And that killin' a man is real immature.
It is just an attention-getting device.
Gunslinger!

Out in the West the folks all believe,
You've faced and killed the toughest hombres of your day.
But time has exposed your feet of clay.
Recent research has clearly shown,
That ninety-three point six percent of the gunmen you've killed...
Were simply accident-prone!
Gunslinger!!

Don't you hate it when you remember something after you've hit the "Submit Message" key?
On that last stanza "Out in the West" it should begin with:
There you'll lie dead in the dust, old buddy.
Old Buddy!
And now [and now] your myth begins.
Out in the West the folks all believe....

Karen;

Thanx, you've certainly got the bulk of it. I'll work on it; Just caught a cold so I'll probably take it easy a few days..

Gonna try to also do "Billy the Kid," which is in the DT, & I believe, is traditional. (public domain)

ps; where'd you get the CD?

Cheers, BK

Hi BK, sorry about your cold. I got the CD at Tower Records about a year ago. They had quite a few Limeliter CDs to choose from which happily surprised me.

BTW — The lyrics M4M posted are pretty close to what I remember, but isn't the first line after the repeated "Gunslinger" supposed to be "Where did you go wrong"?

Yes, ddw, that sounds right. That would explain why they ask about his childhood. Shoot! I should just demand the CD back from my brother...

DEfinitely it's "where did you go wrong?" This was one of my favorite songs in junior high school -- off one of the first albums I ever owned -- a birthday gift from a godmother who liked parody right up to Mark Russell. Go figure!

I think after the line about "You've killed...old buddy" It echoes with a prolonged drawn out "OOoolllllllld buddy" instead of "gunslinger"

I have the album but my turntable's not set up! ARRGH!

Thank you all.

I was going mad trying to remember all the lyrics, and finally located this site, which seems to be the only place that has this information.

Except for variations like "Old buddy" instead of gunslinger, here's how I now have the song (with "brothers" updated to "siblings"):

Gunslinger, gunslinger, where did you go wrong?
When you were a child, did the Cheyenne and Sioux
Refuse to play nicely with you?
Did you always feel you didn't belong?
Gunslinger.

Gunslinger, gunslinger, why do you act so strange?
When you were a child were you forced to compete
With siblings you never could beat
Did you come from a broken home on the range?
Gunslinger.

Gunslinger, gunslinger, please take my advice.
You know in your mind that you're plumb insecure,
That killin' a man is real immature.
It is just an attention-getting device.
Gunslinger.

You've killed one hundred and thirty men, my darling.
And now you want to settle down.
But other gunslingers are a-gunnin' for you,
And a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
Gunslinger.

Don't wear your guns to town tonight, gunslinger.
Last night you cried out "Mother dear!"
You've got a recurrent dream in your craw
And that dream of your maw will inhibit your draw.
Gunslinger.

There you lie dead in the dust, gunslinger
And now your myth begins.
Out in the west, the folks all believe
You faced and killed the toughest hombres of your day
But time has exposed your feet of clay.
Current researchers have clearly shown
That 93.6% of the gunmen you killed were simply accident-prone.

Gunslinger.

The song mentioned above, with the verses presented in a slightly different order, was sung by Katie Lee on a forgettable album from the 1950s called 'Songs of Couch and Consultation'. The theme of the album was poking some fun at the Psychiatric profession. This song, the last one on side two, was the standout track from that record.

Right now I am just a little too lazy to look up anything but there were a couple of comedic gunfighter ballads from the 60's. I think one was "Irving, the One Hundred and Eighty- Second Fastest Gun in the West" and another was a parody on Lorene Green's "Ringo". The Sons of the Pioneers did a neat little number "Curly Joe" I believe, or "Curly Joe From Idaho" about a card cheat.

The line in this song "Did you come from a broken ... home on the range?" comes from Tom Lehrer, who performed the song in concert circa 1960. This line is not in the Katie Lee version. Lehrer announced the authorship in performancem as he did with Sheldon Harnick's "The Merey Little Minuet", which the Kingston Trio picked up from him.

Gunslinger, gunslinger, gunslinger, gunslinger,

Gunslinger, gunslinger, where did you go wrong?
When you were a child, did the Cheyenne and Sioux
Refuse to play nicely with you?
Did you always feel you didn't belong?
Gunslinger.

You've killed one hundred and thirty men, old buddy.

Did you come from a broken home on the range?
Old buddy.
Don't wear your guns in town today, old buddy.
[Gunslinger, gunslinger]

Last night you cried out "Mommy dear!"
You've got a recurrent dream in your craw
And that dream of your maw will inhibit your draw, old buddy.
Old buddy, old buddy
Yippee-i-ay,
Yippee-i-oh.

Gunslinger, gunslinger, please take my advice.
You know in your mind that you're plumb insecure,

People have done a great job on the lyrics to that clever satirical cowboy song, 'Gunslinger," by the Limeliters, but has anyone worked out the chords to it? I love this song, but it seems not to have just the standard I-IV-V chords. Thanks for any help anyone can give!

Hi, Og - before starting a thread, use the filter to search to see if you can find a previous thread to build on. I moved you over here, which seems to be an appropriate place. Usuing the ChordU link Kingsley Hahn provided above, I came up with https://chordu.com/search?q=gunslinger+limeliters

That site gave two sets of suggested chords:

E F Abm Db Ebm Ab Eb B D

or

Eb Cm E D Dm Bb Gm G Gb B C F A

I don't do chords myself, so I don't know if these will work - but at least it's a start.
