Can anyone name an English film of the 1940s which featured this 1800s ballad? It's the last question I need answered to win a film contest. Grateful for any help. -Arne Andersen

I'll bet it was Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair but I don't know for sure.

I don't know ANYthing about this - just throwing out some movie titles in the hope someone will recognise if one is correct:
Great Expectations (1947)
Odd Man Out (also 1947)
Anything ring a bell?

How about "Tunes of Glory"? I'm not sure if it was 40's or 50's but the subject matter was the struggle for control of a post-war Scottish regiment and there was a lot of bagpipe music. I'd be surprised if "Nut Brown Maiden" wasn't heard in it.

I think it was Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's I Know Where I'm Going (1945), but I'll have to check it and get back to you on that.

Malcolm is right! My wife's favorite film of all time. I Know Where I'm Going with Wendy Heller and Roger Livesey, but my favorite in the film was Pamela Brown!

I thought "I Know Where I'm Going" too. My favorite was the whirlpool and her gown sucked down into it. Great movie.

Could be one of the most romantic films ever made. We've always loved it too.

I'm very fond of that film.  Powell had also made documentaries about the Hebrides, and hired a Gaelic consultant to make sure that the language was used correctly.  The song arrangements were a long way from being authentic (most of the singing was done by the Glasgow Orpheus Choir) but the whole thing was done with respect and an attention to detail that was rare at that time.  Whisky Galore wasn't in the same league.

I searched all about I Know Where I'm Going yesterday, but couldn't verify the background music was in it. All I could find was that the words were recited. Anyway, did I read that Nutbrown (or Nut Brown) Maiden is the same as Bluebells of Scotland? This movie sounds like a must see for me!

The Rankin Family have recorded a fine version of this song in Cape Breton Gaelic: 'Oro m'inion donn'. So have Mary & Frances Black.

The film was "I know where I"m going" with Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesay - the title came from the old song:-

"I know where I'm going
I know who's going with me
I know who I love
But the De'il knows who I'll marry"

"Nut Brown Maiden" are the sassenach words - the original Gaelic words are "Ho ro mo Nighean donn Bhoidhearch"

I have a wonderful recording made at the gathering of the Clans in 1977 - sung by massed Gaelic Choirs at the Grand Gaelic Ceilidh at Usher Hall on May 4th 1977. The recording also includes "Crimond" with its wonderful descant.

I have a large collection of Scottish recordings - even though I'm a gor blimey cockney

We now have the DVD and have learned, much to my wife's horror, that Livesey was stuck in London, doing a stage play, throughout the filming. All those lovely outdoor shots of him in his swinging kilt striding o'er the shoreline rocks and hills were done by a stand-in! The interiors were all shot in London.
But Pamela Brown was great wherever she was filmed, despite her painful arthritis.
And they used to say "photographs don't lie!"

Yes, I had read that bit about the London play thing. It was very well cut to create such a seamless show.

Thoroughly enjoy the show whenever it shows up on late night television.

Sandy, could you tell me which company puts it out on DVD and what sort of call numbers to try and order it? Thanks.

The description of the execution by drowning of the unfaithful wife and her lover gave me nightmares for decades, it still gives me the horrors, I've got goose bumps just mentioning it.

The film absolutely is "I Know Where I'm Going" with Wendy Hiller. Utterly charming movie.

I totally agree on all counts - for anybody who has access to my favourite 'Talking Pictures' TV Chanell, it's regularly featured there - it's been on this week (UK/Ireland) so it will probably be repeated in the near future

I must be getting old, because I used to find the semi operatic rendition of the song in the film a bit cheesy, but watching it again recently, I find it does seem to work. Considering what was going on in 1945, you also have excuse the fact that much of it was not actually filmed in Scotland, but through great editing you would never know.

I reckon all the Powell and Pressburger films bear repeated viewing, being rather quirky they are often more entertaining third or fourth time around. A bit like folk songs of course.

They regularly crop up on Talking Pictures
We'll be watching 'Colonel Blimp' shortly - saw the strange one about the nuns in the isolated mission a few weeks ago (Black Narcissus ?)
Matter of Life and Death is on regularly - we' watch it every time
They really don't make 'em like that any more
