I'm not sure if it was 40's or 50's but the subject matter was the struggle for control of a post-war Scottish regiment and there was a lot of bagpipe music. I'd be surprised if "Nut Brown Maiden" wasn't heard in it. |

Powell had also made documentaries about the Hebrides, and hired a Gaelic consultant to make sure that the language was used correctly. The song arrangements were a long way from being authentic (most of the singing was done by the Glasgow Orpheus Choir) but the whole thing was done with respect and an attention to detail that was rare at that time. Whisky Galore wasn't in the same league. |

Anyway, did I read that Nutbrown (or Nut Brown) Maiden is the same as Bluebells of Scotland? This movie sounds like a must see for me! |

From: GUEST,John W Herbert -- faafx88591@yahoo.com The film was "I know where I"m going" with Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesay - the title came from the old song:- "I know where I'm going I know who's going with me I know who I love But the De'il knows who I'll marry" "Nut Brown Maiden" are the sassenach words - the original Gaelic words are "Ho ro mo Nighean donn Bhoidhearch" I have a wonderful recording made at the gathering of the Clans in 1977 - sung by massed Gaelic Choirs at the Grand Gaelic Ceilidh at Usher Hall on May 4th 1977. The recording also includes "Crimond" with its wonderful descant. I have a large collection of Scottish recordings - even though I'm a gor blimey cockney John |

From: Sandy Paton We now have the DVD and have learned, much to my wife's horror, that Livesey was stuck in London, doing a stage play, throughout the filming. All those lovely outdoor shots of him in his swinging kilt striding o'er the shoreline rocks and hills were done by a stand-in! The interiors were all shot in London. But Pamela Brown was great wherever she was filmed, despite her painful arthritis. And they used to say "photographs don't lie!" Sandy |

From: GUEST,Jerry I must be getting old, because I used to find the semi operatic rendition of the song in the film a bit cheesy, but watching it again recently, I find it does seem to work. Considering what was going on in 1945, you also have excuse the fact that much of it was not actually filmed in Scotland, but through great editing you would never know. |
