09 Aug 01 - 10:57 AM (#524287) Subject: FSGW Getaway-2001..Signup forms & ideas From: Bill D the old thread was at 100 posts and loading slowly...so, here are Charlie Baums last two posts... Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2001-Which dates? From: Charlie Baum Date: 08-Aug-01 - 11:17 PM Shop: Well, The No requirement to be a member, though members receive a discount, and you can join when you register. Many people show up on Friday after leaving work; since people leave work in places from Virginia to Connecticut and beyond, arrival times may vary, but by 8:30 p.m. or so, there's always informal good music going on Friday night. Well, the registration form is complete, but the FSGW website is an experimental exercise in changeability, as we're slowly instigating a new system that takes the burden off of the webmaster and allows committee chairs to update their info. Try this link to see if it produces a Getaway registration form. I'll produce a formal Mudcat link later this week, along with the brochure information. --Charlie Baum Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2001-Which dates? From: Charlie Baum Date: 08-Aug-01 - 11:21 PM Yes! 09 Aug 01 - 02:11 PM (#524444) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway-2001..Signup forms & ideas From: Charlie Baum The dates are., indeed, Friday, October 19 (we'll be there in the afternoon setting up to receive guests; if you're early, you can lend a hand) through Sunday, October 21, though actually it runs so late on Sunday night (into the wee hours) that you can stay overnight and join in the breakfast on Monday morning (with prior reservation). See the registration form. One note: the registration formis in Acrobat format, so you can download Acrobat for free if you son;t already have it. One caveat: if you go the www.fsgw.org site and look up the Getaway, any schedule information regarding meals or workshops posted at this point (early August) is entirely fictional and experimental, as we're still de-buggin g the grid system. By September, it should be more accurate. Y'all come now! --Charlie Baum |
09 Aug 01 - 02:23 PM (#524459) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway-2001..Signup forms & ideas From: GUEST,Ferrara (Where's my cookie???) Repeating what Charlie said on the previous thread, you don't have to be an FSGW member to come to the Getaway. If you're bringing several people from one family, it will probably save money if you join FSGW anyway. Lots of people show up during the day on Saturday if they have other commitments. Bob Zentz had a Saturday gig a couple of years ago. He arrived for the late Saturday singing, led a concertina workshop and gave a concert Sunday morning, then left by noon Sunday for his next gig... a real "drive-by performace" ... and added a WHOLE lot to our weekend... so you can see we're very flexible. The registration form lets you specify pretty clearly how long you'll be here. Just one thing: If you change your mind and are coming earlier, let us know in time so we can have meals ordered for you! Now for the program. PLEASE post to this thread if there are workshops and/or concerts you'd like to see in the program. If you have an idea for a workshop you might lead, PM me or post it here. (Fortunato and RiB have already posted, other folks have e-mailed me.) I can't always include every workshop that is suggested, but it helps so much to get people's input and offers of help. More on this later, got to go now. Rita Ferrara

People are to go through their old pop albums and find songs they can sneakily disquise as folk songs. Of course, the "hits" might be instantly recognisable. I LIKE Dani's idea! 21 Aug 01 - 09:34 PM (#532910) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway-2001..Signup forms & ideas From: GutBucketeer Didn't a suggestion come up after last year's Getaway to have a "Singing in the Shower" workshop? :-) I have even learned a new song for it. "Singing in the Bathtub" as performed by Eddie Walters, R. Crumb and others. I hope to be there fully mobile (no crutches!) with my gutbucket, banjo ukes, and other stuff this year. I would love to help with a jam of jugband and comic/novelty songs of the 10s, 20s, and 30s (From the Georgia Yellowhammers, the Dallas String Band, and the Hokum Boys to Cliff Edwards, Frank Crumit, Billy Muray, Helen Kane, Annette Hanshaw, etc.) Modern stuff too if it fits the style. However, I don't know enough tunes to lead. Would anyone like to join me in this ??? Gutbuckteer (aka JAB) |
22 Aug 01 - 11:25 AM (#533244) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway-2001..Signup forms & ideas From: Fortunato JAB, I'd certainly attend, I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough to lead either. But I'll be there and do a little learning if necessary to help you out. BTW, Micca's coming, I think I'm picking him up at the airport and driving him up on Friday.
We're thinking of having a session for him at our house or the 'Mile. You in? Chance |
22 Aug 01 - 12:40 PM (#533298) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway-2001..Signup forms & ideas From: Ferrara Whoa! I'm going to have to kick Bill D off the computer more often so I don't get so far out of touch here! :-) Where to start? Fortunato, you suggested "Help I am Lost Please Direct Me to 1935." Sorry, that's too long to type in the grid! :-) So, would you settle for "Back to 1935?" or "Back to the 30's"? You can PM me for details. CET, I'm thinking of having a session called "Civil Wars" and one called "Uncivil Wars." I would like to get someone from the US and someone from the UK to co-lead the Civil Wars. I know several people who do songs from the American Civil war but would like to hear from any mudcatters who are interested. CET, do you do a lot of that type of music? On the subject of session leaders, it helps to have two or more people leading a session. Dani, have you just volunteered to lead "Scary Stories and Songs" around the camp fire on Friday or Saturday night? It may have to be after 11pm so as not to conflict with the concert though. I'll give that some thought. We do have a kids' campfire led by Annie Storr and Joe Offer, it's been especially nice since Joe has been there to captivate the kids with his story telling magic. CET, not sure what you mean by vocal warm up sessions. There are plenty of places for people to warm up, but also, Lisa Null will be doing her vocal clinic for an hour each day. Last year I think she spent a lot of time talking about warm-ups. Would you like to lead a vocal warm-ups session, either first thing in the morning or after lunch one day? I think it would be very welcome, lots of people would be interested in learning more about it. PM me about it OK? My vague plan is to post the list of workshops planned to date, and tell which ones still need leaders. I should also post that on the Web site. It would sure save me a lot of phone calling if people came to me and OFFERED to help. ESPECIALLY, those of you who are long-time members of FSGW, and have led stuff in the past, or wanted to do so --- I would LOVE to hear from you. If I haven't already called you it's because I'm an air head, not because I'm not interested. You know who you are. Jeri! I hereby appoint you leader of the session on "Songs Bill D Will Hate!" (Just kidding -- I think) GutBucket, I haven't found a leader yet for a Jug Band session. Have only asked two people so far though. Could you lead it if you only have to lead one or two songs? (That's the first, and the last if you wish.) Then you just start asking the other participants who wants to lead something. If you run out of songs, you all can leave.... no problem. I would LOVE to have this session. SWIMMERS: I DON't believe the camp would look kindly on our using the pool. They have a caretaker who fussed last year just because we un-stacked the pool chairs for the Shanty Sing. (Charlie, can you clear it ahead of time this year for us to use the pool area for singing if desired?) Anybody who wants to help with anything, just post to this thread or PM me. If you don't hear from me, PM Bill D who will beat me with a wet noodle and make me check my mail. We will be having a Silent Auction again this year to benefit the Getaway Scholarship Fund. If you would like a grant from said Scholarship Fund, indicate it on your registration and write a separate note about why you need it. Funds are limited but we try hard to help. I was taking names as I read this thread, so will be sending PM's to several people WRT the program.

I'm afraid that we will be living in a condo and no loud music is acceptable, BUT, maybe some gentle playing could be done. We do have, however, a beautiful ocean across the street from our place and long walks on the beach are wonderful. As for NH, we would have to work that out. There must be a train from New York. Set up flying back from NY, or even better Newark, New Jersey., or even better, Boston! Or maybe NH has an international airport around somewhere. In fact anyone is welcome to come and stay at our place on the way home from The Getaway. Just let me know. Love, Annamill

And just to add some spice we're inviting people to dress appropriately for that period. I'd like the casual passerby to think they're peering into a time capsule. I hope to see you all there! Regards, Chance Shiver.

Well, if it does, I can't find anything on it. Manchester, NH Airport Annamill, when the heck did you move/are you moving?!?! |
24 Sep 01 - 12:03 PM (#557757) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway-2001..Signup forms & ideas From: Charlie Baum The nearest Amtrak station to Keene, NH hides some 20-odd miles away just across a state line: Brattleboro, VT. Manchester (NH) Airport offers many cheap flights (see Southwest Airlines, for example, which goes from Manchester to BWI [Baltimore/Washington]). But either of the above would require someone to pick you up/drop you off at the nearest station/airport. --Charlie Baum |

Honey's brother, Doug (you met him) says he will come down from Maine and do all the work needed, but I'm not putting money into the house without security that I'll be there for awhile. The new place IS a condo, but we are still on the river and we can kayak, fish, swim, etc. We still have a fireplace. The ocean is right across the street (you remember) and we have a pool!! right outside the back door. We still have plenty of crashing space. Three bedrooms and a den and a nice size livingroom. We can still do music, but not late..well, we can still do it late, if we're quiet about it. We may be able to do some music by the pool. I'll have to find out though. We can always go over to the beach and play as loud as you like!! It also get very lonely in paradise. Nobody comes to visit. It's a good move. ..and everything works! Again, anyone that would like to stop over after, or, before the Getaway is welcome. Love, annamill |

I suspect we will get there well after dinner on Friday night and leave out late on Sunday. Anyone generating a list of Mudcatters who are coming (sorry to hear that Bill and Sam can't make it)? It might be inspirational to the few who haven't committed to see just who they may meet at the Getaway. Roger in Baltimore |
