BS: Congratulations Treaties

This is likely to create a great gnashing of teeth among the purists but my friend Theresa won the Shanty Singing competition at Redcar Festival at the weekend. It is the first time a woman has won and I believe it was richly deserved, so I would like to say ---

WELL DONE THERESA

Now if we could just get a blues page dedicated to all the great women blues musicians here at Mudcat, life would be grand.

SORRY -- big faux-pas - it was at SALTBURN FOLK FESTIVAL
Redcar FF has been defunct for a number of years now but old habits die hard

Old habits (as opposed to say, talent and ability), have also been linked to the cause of women not winning shanty singing competitions, haven't they? :-)

Hooray well done Theresa! See you at Whitby next week I hope!

If it's the Theresa I think it is, it was a good choice of the judges.

I think Stan Hugill would probably have agreed. I remember there was at least one woman with us in the crew at the recording session for Shanties of the Seven Seas - "call her a cabin boy" I think he said they should do, if anyone remarked on the voice when the record came out.

I was lucky enough to be there with Theresa and the rest of Shellback Chorus. It was a fabulous performance, and well deserved to win.

And we all got to share the bottle of port afterwards!

Great stuff, Theresa! You were mentioned only this evening as being a great shanty leader (by someone who heard the Shellbacks in Liverpool).

Sorry I missed your triumph... and the port! Looking forward to Fleetwood.

Congratulations from another woman who likes to sing shanties!!! (Although I'm not even close to being able to win a competition.)

So what shanties did she sing?

When the Magician heard she had won he was NOT amused, but I was when she faced him down in the supermarket!!(He hadn't been able to enter as he hadn't a full weekend ticket.)

He also clipped Ray Padget round the ear for letting WOMEN enter.

(However he also congratulated her as all good mudcats do)

If Ive come up as guest again I have just reset my cookie honest. Thanks everyone for the congratulations. I must admit I was 'gobsmacked' at the news and still feel 10feet tall.

The two songs I sang for the competition were from the singing of the brilliant shanty group The Johnson Girls, Wont You Help Me To Raise'em Boys and Julianna Julianna also known as London Julie.

Both great choices, the fellows didn't know them and had to learn and sing them at a 'working rythmn' of my choosing, plus also, I love singing blues and they have that kind of feel and I really enjoyed singing them out in public for the first time.
