Help: Banks of the Ohio/Edisto?

Subject: Banks of the Ohio/Edisto?
From: GUEST,ricklee@pobox.com for Jack Williams

Jack Williams is visiting here in Natick, and we were reminiscing about a lovely gathering last year on the banks of the Edisto river in South Carolina. Someone told Jack that the song we all know as Banks of the Ohio was originally written about the Edisto. Jack has been unable to find more about this. Might any of you knowledgable Mudcatters have help on this?

Thanks,

Rick mailto:ricklee@pobox.com http://ricklee.org

There doesn't seem to be any evidence that this is the case. Someone may have altered a version to suit local conditions at some time. Happens all the time.

There is not much info about this song on Mudcat, though this recent thread may turn up something eventually.

I can recommend looking at the entry for this ballad here in the Traditional Ballad Index. Quite concise and not over enlightening, however. As you can see from the thread above, I have my own ideas but, at present, no evidence to support them.

Cheers!
Ian

There is an entry in the Bodleian Ballad library, dated between 1819 and 1844, called The banks of O Hi O which may be of interest.

This is an unrelated song, though you will find a reference to it in The Traditional Ballad Index if you search for Ohio.
