Tune Req: Old Dun Cow

We found the Old Dun Cow, but have forgotten all but parts of the tune. There is a tune file, but we can't seem to play it... MS is remarkably obtuse about why.

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks -

John T.

I couldn't get the file to play either, so I saved it to hard disk and imported it into NoteWorthy Composer. It had 200 or so blank measures before the tune started. If you want me to email you a working MIDI, let me know.

If I've got the title right, this is one that mudcatter Gary T sang for us at WINFIELD last year. Excellent job.

I hate to put someone else on the spot, but if he doesn't happen to drop in with it, perhaps a PM to him wouldn't be out of line.

Or, since I hear he'll be at WINFIELD again in a couple of weeks, stop in and we'll take you over to his camp and let him sing it for you.

John

Thanks for the kind words, John.

I'm afraid I'm totally ignorant of ways to communicate tunes over the internet. Sorry about that. But I do recommend coming to Winfield, where you could hear the tune and perhaps enjoy a few (hundred) others during the festival. Alternatively, you're welcome to stop by in Kansas City.

I believe that Tom Dahill has this on one of his tapes. I don't know if they're distributed other than by him (he's in St. Paul, as far as I know).

Chances are one of our fellow Mudcatters can help with posting tune notation here.

One of the reasons that the tune is so hard to come by is the singers and listeners are usually so "blue-blind-paralytic drunk" when it's sung that no one can remember nothing.;-}

Sheet music at the numachi DT Mirror site. If you scroll down you can also choose MIDI.

I checked the tune in the downloadable version of the Digital Tradition, and it seems to be OK. Sometimes, parts of the Digital Tradition get goofed up when they're converted to the formats used in the online version of the database. Lets hope the next conversion fixes the tune.

John, can you get Mudcat Radio? If you ask him in a PM, or on next Tues' radio show thread, I'll bet he could play it on the show. I know Seamus Kennedy sings it, and I think Max has all his cd's. Or, if I had the words in front of me, I could sing it, and give you a rough idea of how it sounds in MY head. Hopefully there'll be a few guests there to yell "McIntyre!!!" at the appropriate times!

Marymac

Gary T.

Sorry to put you on the spot like that, but it looked like a good opportunity to tell folks what a fine singer you are AND to get in another plug for Winfield.

I thought maybe he'd call you up and you could sing it for him.

I see our other fine folk have pretty much solved the problem, so we'll have to look for some other place to advertise(?)

John

Well, heck, John, as far as advertising, writing on restroom walls always worked for me. But sure, John T could send me a Mudcat PM (gotta join first, but that's free) and we could arrange a phone call.

Of course, now that you've been foolish kind enough to praise my singing, I've got a few new ones to inflict upon share with you and Lin this year.

Three weeks and we'll be in Winfield! Hooray!

You betcha, come and "inflict" all you want; we'll trade old-timey cowboy tunes and watch the hardcore bluegrassers gag! Deal?
