I was just called by a friend of mine who'd been e-mailed by a friend of his who was looking for the words to this song. I said "no problem." (Famous last words.) Now I can't find it in the DT or past discussions, and the recording I have it on has apparently has slipped through a wormhole or been carried off by faeries or something.

Does anyone out there have the words? Please?

Jeri, we may have a small problem. According to what I found, Jimmie Driftwood wrote Along the Road of Time; the only thing Webber did that is remotely similar is All Along the Rossendale. I didn't find lyrics for either of them..........

I may have the name wrong, but I don't think so. I've been looking around and can't find any evidence that Dave Webber recorded it. I wonder who has? Johnny Collins maybe?

What I can remember of the chorus:
(Something about friends this and friends that)
We'll raise a glass of wine.
Here's hoping that we meet again,
Along the road of time.

BAM!!! Got it! The clue provided by Sorcha was that the name of the song wasn't what I'd thought. It's called "The Parting Song," and I'll either find the lyrics in the forum or post 'em. It's on Johnny Collins's "Now & Then," which I was inexplicably able to find.

It's also available on the 1993 CD called Together - Solo, by Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. I had trouble understanding some of the lyrics, so I'm glad you transcribed it, Jeri. Here's what's said in the CD booklet:

Dave was having a very long and honest conversation with a very close friend in the small hours of the morning when the realisation dawned that time was running out. It was the last conversation of its kind that they were to have, and Dave wrote this song in memory of a true friend and to serve as a parting song for any circumstance.

BTW, Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman also sing in the chorus on the Johnny Collins recording, and Dave produced it.

Dave Webber did indeed write “Parting Song” (with lyrics as shown by Jeri in August 2001 - NOT those posted immediately above).
I first heard it on the Beggar’s Velvet album entitled Lady of Autumn (another fabulous song) which first came out as an LP in 1990, and later in CD format: one of the best albums I have ever bought!
Beggar’s Velvet included Dave Webber, Anni Fentiman, and Charlie and Cathie Yarwood.

I did once get to sing it, somewhat unexpectedly, at a funeral: it had been printed into the order of service, but I wasn’t asked until we were on our way into the crematorium! I was about to ask the organist for a start note when he started to play it: I thanked him afterwards and asked him how he knew it: “Oh, I just looked it up on YouTube beforehand” he said!
