Which Irish wedding song? There are two of the 18th century of that title, and they were both called 'The Country Wedding', too. Some verses of one of these are in "The Balinderry Marriage" in Sam Henry's Songs of the People", p. 73, 1990, which has music.

Is the song "Haste to the Wedding", 1768? The tune was known earlier to the Irish as "Carrick Fergus", and maybe "The Dargle", and the Scots had the earliest known version as "The Small Pin Cushion".

"The Dargle", apparently to the same tune, was an Irish song commencing "Come haste to our wedding". Whether this was older than "Come haste to the wedding" I do not know, the estimated date is close to the 1768 date of "Come haste to the wedding".

Confusing also is that there are more than one tune called "The Dargle". The tune "A Trip to the Gargle" is "Haste to the Wedding". The tune "The New Dargle" is not.

Again, what are we looking for?

I don't know this song but on Andy Cooney's (this spelling) website (http://andycooney.com/music.htm) there's a short midi of the song with (best guess) the following two lines:

"hope them face problems they'll meet on their way, may God bless this couple who marry today"

Maybe these lines help somebody else to find the song.

The Rego Irish Record catalog lists The Wedding Songbook which contains sheet music for the Irish Wedding Song (item MB-R-93) for 10.95. Call them at 1-800-854-3746 or visit the web site www.regorecords.com.

I have this version on CD by Anna Mcgolderick "Help them face problems they'll meet on their way, may God bless this couple who marry today" I don't have time to get it now, but if you don't have it by the weekend I'll post it here.

A small correction: Haste to the Wedding and Carrickfergus are two different songs. Haste to the Wedding is a fast dance-tune, and Carrickfergus a sean-no/s song which has been given pretty awful English words in a later incarnation.

There are at least two "Carrickferus'"
My comments were on the 18th century tune "Carrick Fergus". Since this thread was started I got ABC's of two versions of 1768 from a correspondent in Edingburgh, and posted them to the Irish music list.

Stephanie Conn posted part of the more modern "Carrickfergus" on the Scots-l list yesterday, giving it the dual title 'Carrickfergus/ The Water is Wide'. Note that part of the song is related to "The Water is wide" (which can't really be separated from "Waly waly").

Check out "When will we be married" performed by the Waterboys or "Mary´s wedding" preformed by Van the Man (Morrisson, that is). Good Luck!

Can you give a few lines of "When will we be married"? I don't have any Waterboys. Is this the one that starts:

When will we be married, be married, be married
When will we be married,
My own sweet [name] (e.g. Buffalo boy).

IRISH WEDDING SONG

210

There they stand, hand in hand, and exchange wedding bands.
Today is the day of all their dreams and plans.
And all of their loved ones are here to say,
"God bless this couple who marry today."

CHO: In good times and bad times, in sickness and health,
May they know that riches are not needed for wealth.
Have them face problems they'll meet on their way.
God bless this couple who marry today.

May they find peace of mind comes to all who are kind.
May the rough times ahead become triumphs in time.
May their children be happy each day.
God bless this family who started today. CHO.

As they go, may they know every love that will show,
And as life gets shorter, may their feelings grow.
Wherever they travel, wherever they stay,
God bless this couple who marry today. CHO.

God bless this couple who marry today.

From: WAYNE

Here's another wedding song you might be interested in. It was done by Johnny Cash.

I PROMISE YOU
Words and music by Johnny Cash
As recorded by Johnny Cash on "A Thing Called Love" (1972)

I promise you the day you marry me,
I'll be everything to you that I should be,
And while you're in the springtime of your years,
You'll not know what it's like to shed a tear.
I'll be the same through all that we go through,
I promise you, I promise you.

I promise you for richer or for poor,
I'll more than share each pain that you endure,
And when you're in the autumn of your years,
Call me in the night and I'll be near.
I'll love you and I'll let you know I do,
I promise you, I promise you.

I promise you for better or for worse,
I'll stand by you as I did at the first,
And when you're in the winter of your years,
I'll be right by your side to dry your tears.
Yes, I'll be the same through all that we go through,
I promise you, I promise you.

I promise you, I promise you.

THE IRISH WEDDING SONG, sung by Andy Cooney, is on these 3 albums:
"Irish Influence," Shanachie CD #52044, 1997;
"A Collection of Irish Hits," Rego Irish CD #3990, 1996;
"Irish Eyes," Rego Irish CD #3560, 1996.

Go to this page and click on a link to play a 50-second mp3 file.

It was written by Ian Betteridge, an Australian, who called it simply THE WEDDING SONG when he recorded it himself. (There are lots of songs with that title.) Betteridge's web site says it has been recorded by over 40 artists worldwide.

From: Big Tim

This is a nice song, written by Francis Arthur Fahy (1854-1935)of Kinvara, County Galway.

HASTE TO THE WEDDING

Through highways and byways, the neighbours are hieing,
The likes of tonight, they'll ne'er see again,
There's music and pleasure and mirth beyond measure,
Where brightly the lights glow in the glen.

CHORUS
O haste to the wedding! O haste to the wedding!
Haste to the wedding, we musn't be late,
O hasten, O hasten, for all the kind faces,
There's place at the wedding of Conor and Kate.

The fiddlers are tuning, the pipers are crooning,
The boys will be soon in the height of the fun,
There dancing and sporting and kissing and courting,
And mirth of all sorts to the light of the sun.

Who's not delighted to see them together?
United and plighted for life and for death,
The dacentest boy ever walked the brown heather,
The darlingest colleen that ever drew breadth.

Come boys, the night passes, fill up your glasses,
And dearest of lasses, sit down by my side,
The punch is before us, we'll toast them in chorus,
"Here's the good health of the bridegroom and bride."

And it's got a lovely tune too.

Does anybody know, where I can get a free music sheet for playing the IRISH WEDDING SONG on the piano by myself ?

I searched the web in "many directions" and I don´t even know, where I still can search.
So I would be very happy, if anyone can mail me the sheet or tell me, where I can free download the music sheet.

Thank you all ...

It's almost time to make my way to the little chapel on the hillside. Boy this is my wedding day.    My friends and family are waiting now, and my love. One night through and all this love I've been saving today I give it all to you. This day will last forever, even till the vend of time.

I'm looking for a song sang by Irish country singer Philomena Begley.
The lyrics are:
1st verse

Today I make a special journey
It's almost time to make my way
To the little chapel on the hillside
For this is my wedding day.

(Chorus)
This day will last forever
To be with us until the end of time
The memories, the joyful tears
Will make us both remember
That this day was yours and mine.

I'd like to know which album this was from as we were given it on our wedding day, copied onto tape format and would love to get it on CD
