31 Aug 01 - 12:28 PM (#539011) Subject: Vive La Rose (chanson quebecoise) From: Turtle Hi all, I have a recording by a Vermont group, Jeter Le Pont, of this song, which I want to sing with my new trio. But I can't make out half the words. Can anyone help? (Yes, 'Spaw, I searched the digitrad and the forum before posting this!) The verses are structured with repeating lines, which Jeter Le Pont sang in overlapping fashion. I don't know if that's traditional or just their arrangement. The repeating lines which are the same from verse to verse are "o gai vive la rose" and "vive la rose et le lilas". The structure of each verse looks like this: line 1 o gai vive la rose line 1 repeated o gai vive la rose line 2 vive la rose et le lilas line 2 repeated vive la rose It's the line 1s and line 2s that I'm having trouble understanding. From what I can make out of the words, it's the story (all too common, alas!) of a young woman deserted by her lover for another "bien plus riche que moi". I think the lover takes ill and dies, but for all I can tell it may be the protagonist herself who withers away for the loss of her love. Oh well, it's a pretty song, anyway! Can anyone help? Sets of words are available all over the net and don't differ a great deal, but not a single one that I've seen bothers to acknowledge any traditional source, which is vastly irritating. The other links are to unrelated songs which share forms of the common vive la rose refrain. Here is a paraphrase:
"My lover has left me, I don't know why. He's off to see another who is more rich than I. They say that she is very beautiful; I'll not deny it. They say that she is ill; perhaps she will die of it. If she dies on Sunday, they will bury her on Monday; on Tuesday he'll come back to see me, but I shan't want him." |

The song appears on several Nana Mouskouri CD's, including Vielle Chansons de France. She calls it "Vive La Rose," and doesn't give a songwriter attribution. It sounds like a pop song, but I'll betcha Piaf could make it sound traditional and timeless. The version posted below is from one of the sites Toadfrog linked to. On dit qu'elle est tres belle...Bien plus belle que moi... On dit qu'elle est malade...Peut-etre qu'elle en mourra... Si elle meurt dimanche...Lundi on l'enterra (sung "l'enterra", correct grammar should be "l'enterrera", but it's too many syllables!) Mardi il reviendra me voir (another mouthful!)...mais je n'en voudrai pas... I suppose I could make a cassette copy if anyone were interested... |

I'll PM you about it. That bit about the grammar of "l'enterrera" vs. "l'enterra" is interesting to me. I think that in the version I have, they sing "Mardi revient me voir" which is clearly in the wrong tense, probably for the same reason. I notice you also wrote, "o gue vive la rose" instead of "o gai vive la rose" as most of the other versions I've seen have it--is there a reason for that? |

An oft-cited source is Chants et chansons populaires des provinces de l'ouest, Volume 1, p. 265 (with score), collected by Jérôme Bujeaud; Niort: L. Clouzot, 1866. I found the same lyrics and score in another journal dated 1863, so Bujeaud's work may have an earlier first printing date. Bujeaud collected the song in Poitou and Angoumois. The lyrics there are, with the most minor differences, as Joe gave them above. The tune tallies with the "pop" versions, except that the first couplet was not repeated (though in some other 19th c. sources they are). You will also see "Mon amant" for "Mon ami" and "O gué" for "O gai". Clearly related is another old song about an orange-seller: "La marchande d'oranges". It has nearly the same metrical and structural pattern, a somewhat similar tune, and the same final line to each verse, "Vive la rose et le lilas."
