Kingston - Hull

Sorry to use the site for this but I was not sure how else to get the info.

I will be coming home to Hull in the next few weeks (probably September 28th) thought I might see whats happening at Kingston. Hopefully bring the guitar and play if that is OK.

Can anyone tell me about the club, what you do, is it guests or a singaround, is it traditional or contemporary etc. etc. Is it every Saturday? Can I come or is it members only?

Steve

Steve, I have just started going to The Kingston, it is really friendly and informal, it is a mizture of tunes and singing, with plenty of different instruments(Bazouki, fiddles, bodhrans guitars, melodeon, banjo, whistles etc) It is every Friday and FREE, although I think there is one night soon when the room used has been booked for a wedding.Perhaps you could PM Les in Hull (He runs the session).

Hi Steve!

I think that 28 Sept may be the one night that there will be no session at the Kingston as Geoff our landlord needs the room. On all other Fridays there's a general session (songs, tunes, monologues, poetry, anything legal) starting about 9ish. It's the Kingston in Cumberland Street (beware of imitations). Actually the sessions runs itself, there is no obersessionmeister or branch of the Folk Police. If you're coming on the weekend that we can't have the room, get in touch and we'll try to fix something up. It'll be a pity not to meet up after all these years. I saw PT (Paul from Hull) this afternoon and I'm sure he'd like to be included.

See you soon, Les

it isn't a 'folk club' either Steve...no membership, no entry fee, no interval,no prima donnas and no cliques... it can't be a Folk club...we don't even have a raffle!!

Actually Steve if you make it the week afterwards not only will the sheep be back from it's holidays BUT you would also get the Sunday session in Nellies Beverley, which is brilliant. Bring your own ferret.

I went to Hull today (on business). Don't think I've ever been before. Looks a nice, prosperous place (hardly got off the A63, though). There was a funny smell - was it because the tide was out?

That funny smell was probably fish!

(There are a lot of smoked kipper factories near the A63)

Yup, good idea, Steve....

Bald Eagle, it depends which bit of Hull you had to drive through...there are some strange smells in this place!

....& prosperous? *LOL* The City Council may have been able to spend a bit more if they hadnt had to be saving up for Les' Pension.....*G* Put it this way, he was working for them for so long, I think he was originally Inteviewed by either Wm. Wilberforce, or Sir John Hotham.......*G*

Mmmm Bald Eagle I think it was probably Cocoa Mills where they crush the seeds for oil -it is a sickly oily smell a bit like a mixture of cocoa and cod liver oil(yummy) -other than that it could have been Les's feet.

Hi Steve,

Well Les has some degree of 'responsibility' for the Kingston session, but I dont..though it'll be good to see you & I'll therefore definately be there (for what might well be the 1st time in quite a while, unless I do go before then)

When you said October though, I had to check my 'Diary', knowing I'm away for a couple of w/ends in Oct...but its the 2 Fridays FOLLOWING your visit that I'll be out of Hull.

How long are you in Hull for that w/end? The Kingston 'do' is purely a session, but as for Clubs, Nellies still runs on a Monday night, & the Cottingham Club on a Wednesday night, just in case you didnt know.

Cheers,

Paul

White Dove, Sheep are not my thing! Foot Massage? I'll make sure I change my socks.

Ikkle Dorritt, Is Nellies on on the weekend October 12th? Not sure if I can stay past Sunday but you never know. Last time I was in Nellies, they still had real gas lamps. Wow what a long time.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

I like Hull too - they put statues of Royalty on top of the public toilets, so you can see where they are - even the one in the middle of the dual carriageway!

And it's where the English Civil War started.... is there a link here?

Hull has got the best netty in britain, (the one on the pier).

Hmmm...'Netty'....I can see Southerners (who, of course, cant speak proper) having trouble with that word, to say nothing of our Cousins.....*G*

I would recommend THIS site:

Alison, Steve

I cant be SURE that there'll be as sesh at the Kingston on Friday, as a lot of the regulars tend to go up to Whitby for New Year (so I dunno if that means they will still be in Hull on Friday or not...)

MAYBE 'someone who knows' might see this before Friday, though not many seem to post lately.

You can find the Kingston HERE:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?x=509750&y=430250&zoom=1&isp=200&ism=500&arrow=y?188,146

(marked by the arrow, at the Northern end of Cumberland Street. The area of the map is just North of the man part of the Town Centre, withe the Bus/Train Station just off the bottom left of the Map)

All the best,

Paul
