07 Sep 01 - 03:52 PM (#544698) Subject: Rediscovered gem From: GUEST,frankie Some months ago I made an inquiry here about Sid Selvidge and one mudcatter was kind enough to mention a recording of his called "Twice Told Tales". I stumbled across it in a used CD bin about about a month ago and I've been listening to it ever since. I don't recall having heard a recording that I like so much of. He is a great practitioner of the country blues and sings them, even funky, funny ones like "Keep It Clean", in his own voice (and what a voice!). That is, not like he's trying to recreate some hokum out of the past but he makes it all sound fresh and real. His guitar playing is clean and spare and very tasteful and tasty. Also, let me add, beautifully recorded. This is all just part of the story because he covers so much other ground so well. He does the best version of "Buffalo Skinners" that I've ever heard, he does some goodtime Rock and Roll, some gospel type singing, a Woody-type ballad and a stunning original ballad called "Here Today". You might think such an eclectic program might be doomed to failure but it all works, probably because of that voice. I won't try to describe its' physical properties, I'll only say he sounds like he has a deep appreciation for and understanding of every song and every word he sings. I kind of like this one. If you could recall more someone might be able to find the old thread. Such as when I recently received Sid Selvidge's CD, A Little Bit of Rain, which I ordered after reading some reviews at Amazon.com. The instant I heard Selvidge's wonderful voice, I knew I'd hit paydirt, and it only got better the more I listened. Where the hell have *I* been? Why is this artist not better known? One reviewer commented that artists such as Selvidge can get by just releasing one CD every few years. Someone needs to get Selvidge in the studio to document more of this man's artistry for posterity. rogerontheoldtraps |

You can also hear him with Mudboy and the Neutrons," from back in the '60s (on CD and called "It Came From Memphis, on Birdman label.) And nobody sings Fred Neil's "I've Got A Secret (Didn't We Shake Sugaree)" better than Sid Selvidge-- except Fred Neil-- |
