I´m trying to get a new Irish band together and we´ve come up with the the earth-shattering idea of calling it (dont laugh) Moo-Cow-Pooh. Can anybody write that phonetically in gaelic? You know, lots of h´s and u´s and stuff. All help appreciated!!J.

john, we have quite a few Gaelic speakers around here and I'm sure one of them will be by to help you out. As for me, let me say that you are a really sick and perverse individual.....and I really like that in a person!!!!

Probably " Cac an bo" or 'Cac na bo". pronounced " cakk na bow"

thanks Jimmy - I was more thinking of writing it in gaelic but so that it still sounds like moo-cow-pooh, but you only check what it is once you say it out loud. Know what I mean???? Like muh-cao-pu or something.

Two problems, I'm afraid, at least as far as Irish is concerned. The "ow" sound as in "cow" is hard to express in the language. Secondly the "h"s you long far generally do things to consonants that don't tie in with the sound you want! Let me think about it.

My Gaelic is extremely rusty, but would "Mhu Caobh Pubh" be an approximation?

muceabhpu The u after the M has a fada (left to right accent). So does the one after the P. The Irish for book is leabhar, pronounced l-ow-er (thats ow as in ouch)hence the ceabh. Generally abh in Irish has the ow sound. Hope this helps.

john c, a chara, with your sensitivity to all things `gaelic' the band should become a big hit on the circuit.

Sure hope Aine or Mick stops in on this one. Perhaps with just a little effort, you could make it a double entendre. For instance, a pooka is a magical horse/water sprite in Irish mythology.

Hell, if all else fails, just make up something that looks like Gaelic! Who would ever know? (Other than Gaelic speakers and Mudcatters, grin)

Thank You, everybody - thats great!!
Apropos the sensitivity bit (in self-defence)- I´ve got another band that concentrates very heavily on the purer side of celtic music and its doing pretty well. The idea behind this new one is to make it more fun and try and get the music to a wider audience. Which does not mean we dont give the music the respect it deserves.
And if I hear of another band called Raglan Road or Masons Apron I´m gonna go and jump in the Limmey!

Yeah Sorch, I am kind of pondering this one. As Martin said, it is not as easy as it looks. Let me chew it over a bit more.
