Busbitter, there is an older thread about this that you can find using the Forum Filter and Age Filter. I believe it is also listed in the thread on "Spirituals Posted at Mudcat" if you have any trouble finding it.

Please continue further discussion of that song in the older thread.

See this thread, among many others. Go to either the Digitrad and Forum Search box or the Forum Search in the Quick Links pull down menu and type in river to pray or Oh Brother........

It's down in the VALLEY to pray. That's the way i'd always heard it.

Is it the Alison Krausse version that I have heard on a recent UK TV advert? I have no idea what the product is.

WYSIWYG (Susan) made a MIDI/NWC file of it....she could send it to you e mail.

It might be worth looking at the sheet music at the North Carolina site given by Wysiwyg in the thread The Good Old Way. Susan says it is slightly different in tune but it may give you some more ideas.

Don't you love being at the point in the folk process for any given item when we may actually think we can nail down what version came first? I don't think we actually can, but we can try!

Tim and Molly O'Brien have a fantastic version of Down in the Valley to pray which they recorded several years ago.
