Tune Req: L & N Don't Stop Here Anymore (J Ritchie

An old friend (He is 87) will have another birthday Thursday and I will sing a couple of his favorites. One is Where Im Bound,(Tom Paxton), the other is "The L and N don't stop here anymore." I already know Bound, but I don't know the L&N and really need to hear it via MIDI, mp3, downloads or whatever.

Yes it is available and I will buy it. But now I am far from a music store and need to rely on the generosity of Mudcatters.

Thanks for your attention. Jeep Man

Hi, Jeepman - our tune in the Digital Tradition is here (click to play). Lyrics are here (click). the tempo on the tune is way too slow. I hope you have MIDI software that can speed it up.
"Yet Another Digital Tradition" usually has the same tunes we have. Their tune on this one, however, seems better - Click here.

Michelle Shocked recorded a good version of this song, although I am not sure witch CD it is on.

Michelle Shocked's version is on 'Short Sharp Shocked'- nice version, and well worth the price of the album.

I like Shocked's version, too, but the way to hear it is from the author, kytrad.

Amen, Pinetop Slim, I'd rather hear Jean Ritchie (Mudcatter kytrad) sing it, too. Always makes the back of my neck prickle.

It's available from my website (www.jeanritchie.com). The tape, "High Hills & Mountains," has been combined with "None But One," to make one CD, so there's two albums on one CD, for you bargainhunters!

With a bargain like that, Jean, folks ought to buy two and give one to a friend!

SORRY about the double-post...I'm really NOT trying to sell anything. But since I'm here again, I'd like to take this opportunity, Jeepman, to wish your old friend who is 8- "A very, very happy birthday, and congratulations on your excellent musical taste!"

From a fan, Jean Ritchie

I wasn't being critical or snotty, Jean. I was completely serious. I think people ought to buy the CD and consider giving a second copy to a friend. I'm also sorry the "Best of..." isn't currently available. (That McCurdy line, by the way, is a great one.)

Jean, my heartfelt thanks for your words and thanks for writing this song. The old man spent many years in the coal fields of East Kentucky and West Virgini. He understands.

Alison, I did get a download which is great, I have sent you an email about the other.

Stay cool all. Jeep Man

Sandy- bless you! I never once in my life ever considered you "snotty" or "critical." And I do thank you for the commercial- we ALL need all the help we can get! I just meant that, because I mistakenly posted the same thing twice, folks might think me pushy... and thanks to you, Jeep Man- I had two brothers in the Kenmont Mines for years, and one of them worked also for a time at Blue Diamond (hence the other song). He died at in his sixties, of mine-related causes.

While I feel sure the question has been asked and answered before somewhere on the Mudcat, I haven't been able to find where someone might have explained what the "tipple" is in this song and how it roars. I've heard other folks substitute "whistle" instead. That sorta makes sense; but I've never heard a whistle do any roaring. Any thoughts?

Hi Allen

I could tell you but you can see them. Just Google Coal Tipple and follow the leads.

Has this query been answered?

The Michelle Shocked album has the song's lyrics on the sleeve, and also gives the signature key for each song. This one is in Em. It uses mainly Em, D, and a bit of C on the chorus.

Thanks, Don. Next time I'll google a word rather than try to find meaning in old man Webster's book! Now it is easy to imagine the rumble and even the roar of the coal as it makes its way through the tipple.
