Jug Band and Skiffle Song Lyrics and Chords

L.R. Mole asked for the chords to Mysterious Mose. I have a recording of R. Crumb and the Cheap Serendaders singing it. The Heptune Web Site says that it was the Title Song in a Betty Boop Cartoon. Was that it's origin? Who else recorded it.

Mysterious Mose was the lead song in the third Betty Boop Cartoon by the Fliesher Brothers.

The Fleischer brothers believed that animation's great strength is that it frees filmmakers from the constraints of reality. They put this philosophy to work in Mysterious Mose, a funny, scary, spooky and absolutely surreal Betty Boop Talkartoon about a supernatural character, produced in 1930.

Dm Gm A7 Dm
There's a man of mystery that's roaming through the land,
A7
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh!

Dm Gm A7 Dm
Far and near you hear of him; he's found on every hand;
A7
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh!

Dm C Bb Dm
Every city, town and village knows of him by now!
A7 G7 C7
There's a way to recognize him; let me tell you how:

Dm Gm A7 Dm
When your path at midnight dark by a graveyard goes,
Gm
And someone whistles, "Whoooooo!"
A7 Dm
That's Mysterious Mose!

Dm Gm A7 Dm
On some dark and stormy night, while the tempest blows,
Gm
If someone whistles, "Whooooo!"
A7 Dm
That's Mysterious Mose!

C7 F
He sees all, he knows all; he's just been everywhere;
D7 A7 Gm A7
Some night, he might wait for you upon the stair!

Dm Gm A7 Dm
So when you're going down the cellar, walk upon your toes,
Gm
And if someone whistles, "Whooooo!"
A7 Gm
That's Mysterious Mose!

Dm Gm A7 Dm
Everybody's talking of me everywhere you go,
A7
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh!

Dm Gm A7 Dm
Who I am or what I am nobody seems to know;
A7
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh!

Dm C Bb Dm
In the mountains, at the seashore, anywhere at all,
A7 G7 C7
Anytime of day or night you'll have to hear me call.

A7 Gm
That's Mysterious Mose!
A7 Gm
That's Mysterious Mose!

One "Mose" was at one time, around the turn of the century or the end of the nineteenth, the king of New York organized crime. Never seen and only whispered about, he operated through an assistant named "Sykesy". That's really all I know about him,but I wonder if there's a connection to this song.

Bob Brozman recorded another version on his Rounder album "Hello central, Give Me Dr. Jazz".

I heard a recording from the 30's on the radio, but I don't know who did it. But it's at least that old.

The Red Hot Jazz Archive has a sound file of MYSTERIOUS MOSE performed by Ted Weems and His Orchestra, recorded April 2, 1930 (Click to play). I was able to transcribe an additional verse from it:

Now, if you're in a haunted house, and a groan comes from below,
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! That's Mysterious Mose.
And if you feel a clammy hand clutching at your clothes,
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! That's Mysterious Mose.
The detectives are defective when it comes to tracing him,
But I'll betcha he'll getcha, if you don't look out for him.
For ev'ry time you hear a shriek, ev'rybody knows,
If someone whistles [WHISTLE SOUND], that's Mysterious Mose.

[Red Hot Jazz Archive also lists recordings by The Rhythmic Eight and by The Radio All Star Novelty Orchestra (a.k.a. Harry Reser and His Orchestra), both recorded in 1930.]

The Online 78 rpm Discographical Project also lists recordings by:
Cliff Perrine & His Orchestra
Frank Auburn's Orchestra
Kansas City Blue Boys
Karl Radlach & His Orchestra
Radio Allstars
Rube Bloom & His Bayou Boys
Ted Wallace & His Orchestra
Ted Weems & His Orchestra
... all from 1930.
