Yes the name is being changed. It was called an "unauthorized leak" at this point. It did sound like an never ending story but what do you expect from "a war against evil by those terrist folks"GWBush quote

The new name is to reflect the fact ,as the DOD stated, that many victories will not be known, leaders will be killed and no one will know etc.

In this light the new name should be SILENT BUT DEADLY

Islamic cleriks have pointed out Infinite Justice has a specific reserved meaning in the Koran. It is a judgement that only ALLAH can bring about.

Deep into the Taliban caves Hydrogen-disulfide gas seeps in. Microwave weapons then immobilize them for the {censored} to finish the job.

The way I understand it works is this: Every time they need to give a name to a new military operation, they use some computer program to generate a random two-letter combination, and then someone thinks up a catchy slogan to fit it. I suppose they use this two-letter code for identifying their paperwork.

Anyway, the two letters generated for this operation were IJ. They probably won't change those. They will probably think of a new phrase that starts with those initials.

Didn't Desert Storm originally have a different name that started with DS? I can't remember what it was or why they changed it though. Or maybe it worked the other way -- when the "storm" was over, they changed it to something more peaceful sounding.

I'm confused by this 'war on terrorism' phrase.... isn't it an oxymoron, or is that just Dubya and the rest of the boys?

Got it! This site says that the original name was Desert Shield when the operation started on Aug. 7, 1990, and the name changed to Desert Storm when the air war began on Jan. 17, 1991.

I think the only thing that really matters to the military is the designation DS. They probably use this on their paperwork for accounting purposes. The mnemonics Desert Storm and Desert Shield were chosen strictly for PR purposes, and as such, were easily changeable.

When our forces liberated the Falklands from the Argie ocupation force, the code name was Operation corporate. Just happened to be the next name on the code list. A much better system than trying to find a snazzy name and then fall flat on your face because of someone's sensibilities!!
