26 Sep 01 - 06:06 PM (#559380) Subject: Lilly the pink? From: Rollo My brother is searching for the original of a german carnival song ("winke winke" by "de Höhner" from cologne). He was told the original is an irish song called "Lilly the pink". I found it mentioned in a former thread stating it is a "Ball house song". Does anyone have the lyrics? and what is a ball house song?

27 Sep 01 - 09:56 AM (#559849) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lilly the pink? From: RWilhelm The song is not that well known in the US but in the 19th Century she was the most recognized woman in America. It was one of the first mass-market advertising campaigns and her picture was constantly in every newspaper in the country. Anyway, I will definitely look for the Scaffold record. BTW, I used to be in a band with the quintessential Massachusetts couple, she was descended from Cotton Mather and he from Lydia Pinkham.

The most I have managed to find it a clip at CDNow.com by doing a title search for "lily the pink" and using the "40 Hits Of 1965-1969 link". It should give some idea what it was like - misses my favourite bit before the last chorus - We-el-el-el-ELL Drink A Drink A Drink.. though. Jon |

From: Rollo Thank you all, folks! yeagh, that´s what makes mudcat so unique... you do not only get the lyrics you request, but also the background to the song, plus you have the choice between several versions... AND there is always someone to fix a link for you, a kind of bonus tracking ;-) ... and I promise, one day I will learn the secret how to find the already added lyrics by myself *BFG*! yet the "Ball house song" problem remains. No, it was not "Bauhaus". I am not too firm with english expressions. But could this just mean something like "a song good to play at dance festivals"?

He "tried" to bring both sides together with singular lack of success. A cousin of mine penned a little ditty on the subject of Terry which he called - funnily enough - "Terry the Pink". The chorus of this parody ran as follows:-
To Terry the Pink, the Pink, the Pink; The saviour of the Ulster face. For he invented "Invisible Progress" Most efficacious in every case. Annraoi |
30 Sep 01 - 06:13 AM (#561825) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lilly the pink? From: Lanfranc Strange though it may seem, there are songs which did not emanate from Ireland! I remember my late father, who was otherwise totally uninterested in the popular music of the time, hearing "Lily the Pink" when the Scaffold version was in the charts. He proceeded to sing to me a bawdy rendition which may have been a version of the RAC song cited by Micca, although he was in the Artillery during WW2, so there were no doubt variations. Alas, I didn't record or write down the words at the time. I suspect it may have had music hall roots, on either side of the pond. (cf "Uncle Joe's Mint Balls" and "Handier Household Help") The sheet music I have of "Lily the Pink" says "Words and music adapted and arranged by Gorman, McGear and McGough", (DT Songid=3598) so that doesn't help much, unless we can trace it back through either of those three. For the benefit of younger readers, Mike McGear's real name was Mike McCartney, brother of the more famous Paul. |
