Ta for this thread, Dai. A couple of people (Sue and Mike) at the Cuckoo monthly session in Wollaston last night mentioned that this new one was about to start up. They reckoned the room it's held in will be designated non-smoking (alleluia!) and that it's for unaccompanied singers only (i.e no instuments). Can you confirm? I'm planning to turn up, and I think Steve Parkes may too.

I'll quote Mr. Dore's email:

This is an e mail from me to all the people on Sue Malleson's list of (folk and other) unaccompanied singers.

There is clearly such a demand for a regular singer only (no instruments) session that we are starting one every Third Tuesday of the month at the Crown, Market Place, Stony Stratford, from 16 October onwards at 8.30.

It is in the room on the left which has a wooden floor, excellent acoustics, plenty of seating, not smoky, and real ale.

The new landlords Lindy and Steve are really supportive, and the signs are that there will be a big turnout for the first session.

If you know any other singers who would be interested please bring them along.

So I suspect smoking isn't banned, but there aren't many smokers in that lot anyway. But it's definitely instrument-free...

Good luck. I remember some really excellent sessions in the Crown from 23 years ago.
Oh Gawd.......I feel old.

The session proceeded very well, with most excellent contributions from Mr. Parkes and Mrs. JulieB - you two really should get out more! It's a pretty good room, I thought, nice hard floors and that - er - 'podium' in the corner...

The only drawback was the beer, a barrel of 6X that had been standing next the bar for 5 days... but I am promised a 'range of guest beers' for next time, and more attention to timing...

The next session will be 20th November. We'll be doing something with the lighting of the room to introduce a bit of mystery... All comments and suggestions, as ever, gratefully received.

Ms JulieB and I had a great time. There are (as I remarekd to Mrs Parkes when I got in) some really good voices there, and those that aren't really good are very good. I haven't got he hang of this "session" business yet, though: I'm used to going in order, and it's quite an effort for a shy (honest!) chap like me to push himself forward. As you say, we ought to get out more!

Steve

I think I'll run it with a wagging finger next month - I'm not comfortable with teh 'Quaker Meeting' style of session either :-)
