Thought for the day - 7 October 2001

One more borrowed, maybe by next weekend I will have met up with my muse, again.:-)

If you have not realized your body's potential, you have not missed much.
If you have not realized your mind's potential, you have missed a little.
If you have not realized your heart's potential, you have missed much.
If you have not realized your soul's potential, you have missed all.

Ah, Kat darlin', this is too good. A great thing to remember and contemplate during these troubled times.

I'm not sure, but I think I disagree about the potential of the mind being little to miss. As a youngest girl I was told I was going to be the good girl who stayed at home to look after mummy and daddy in their old age. I decided then, in my subconcious, that there was no point in doing anything at school so I didn't. My school work suffered because I had my future all mapped out for me, so I didn't need to bother.

I realise now what a waste that was. I could have been so much more had I not spent 3 years of my school life just dossing. I got out of the habit of studying and that's something I truly miss now.

Similarly, I could have been something different if my parents hadn't said what they did. I often wonder who I would have been if they'd not planned my future for me.

As it was, I left home as soon as I could, and they lost all their children, one way or another.

I agree with you, Liz, but its taking the thought a bit too literally. Thats the problem with such sayings - they have to over simplify! You could say that the main sufferings you list were 'heart' caused by 'mind' potential wasted. But equally you could say that the loss of an high-quality mind like, say Isaac Newton, would be far more significant than the fact that he was an irritable social misfit.

My main objection to the saying is that I am sure the highjackers would say that "fulfilling their souls' potential" is precisely what they were doing, to the best of their understanding. I have certain been very much more aware of the military and even quite violent messages in a lot of the Christian hymns, whether your pick something that is quite old (like "St Patrick's Breastplate") or fairly new such as "Lord you have my Heart" by Martin Smith (eg "Let me be to you a Sacrifice" - you can just imagine the pilots singing that)

Hi LTS

That's EXACTLY what my mum and dad said to me. Only I did look after them both. Over the past few years they both died, and for a while I didn't know what to do with myself. Now at xx years of age I am just starting out on the exciting road of a teenager. And loving every minute.

MY THOUGHT FOR THE DAY (source unknown)

Great minds discuss ideas

Medium minds discuss events

Little minds discuss people

I expect most of us are a mix of all three. who'd like to be saddled with number three and be little more than a gossip?

ANOTHER THOUGHT (found on an email)

Is a booby prize of greatest value to a man or woman?

Cheers deni

I'm more with the hero of yesterday's thought of the day, Albert Einstein:

'The mystical trend of our time, which shows itself particularly in the rampant growth of the so-called Theosophy and Spiritualism, is for me no more than a symptom of weakness and confusion. Since our inner experiences consist of reproductions, and combinations of sensory impressions, the concept of a soul without a body seem to me to be empty and devoid of meaning.'

I wonder how you could possibly realize your soul's potential without realizing your heart's, mind's, and body's...
Liz - I think you are wonderful exactly as you are. Even if it was your parents' mistake.

Zen buddhists in common with all other buddhists don't believe in souls but we know what you mean.

Interesting comments from ten years ago. Thought I might refresh a few of the Thought For the Day threads, from time to time. The real gems by PeterT, esp.

Enjoy!

Kat, this particular thought couldn't be more a propos. I needed it, and today was the day I needed it. Thank you so much.

I missed this thread first time around.

My thought for now is cut and pasted from Liz the Squeaks post

...I could have been something different if my parents hadn't said what they did. I often wonder who I would have been if they'd not planned my future for me...

There's a mouthful eh? as Bert has pointed out about Liz's post.

Few days go by that I don't ask myself that same question. Spilt milk tho.
