If you go to the Forum search,enter Womenfolk in the filter box and set the date for a couple of years,you should find lots of info.

They can be hard to find: I'm one who was on the lookout for their stuff and gradually got it all. Bookfinder and/or amazon.com are places to try. One I got at Vinyl Resting Place in Portland Oregon. One I got at Crossroads used music place on Hawthorne in Portland, but you need to plan some time to go through all their stuff -- no index, shelved by consigner. Good luck.

After seeing this post and following instructions, I can't find anyone who answered the question that this thread posed - where are the Womenfolk? I'm not referring to their albums, but what became of the 5 members of the group?

This past weekend I played a cut from the Hungry I album on my show and became curious. It was nice to see someone has resurrected this thread.

Anybody have any idea of "where are they now?"

I can't say I'm familiar with the Womenfolk at all. Who were the members of the group? Can anybody give us a bit of a discography, naming the cuts on their albums? The links I gave a bove give a very sketchy discography. I guess I kind of wrote them off as a folk-pop group, but it sounds like a number of people here are familiar with them.
I don't think you'll find them at Folk-Legacy, but it's quite likely that Collector's Choice Music or Rediscover Music would come up with a restrospective of this group. They have nothing out yet, but they keep a steady flow of new reissues. I just got a Back Porch Majority CD from Collector's Choice, and I was very pleased to get a We Five 2-LP CD from them a while back.

According to my (one) album, "The Womenfolk", RCA Victor LPM-2832, the members of the group were Elaine Gealer, Joyce James, Leni Ashmore, Babs Cooper and Judy Fine. This one includes "Don't You Rock 'em Daddy-O"; "Little Rag Doll"; "Para Bailar la Bamba"; "One Man's Hands"; "Whistling Gypsy Rover"; "Green Mountain Boys"; "Skip to My Lou"; "Love Comes A-Tricklin' Down"; "Little Boxes"; "Old Maid's Lament"; "Rickety Tickety Tin"; and "Good Old Mountain Dew" (sic throughout).

The last I knew, Joyce James was an owner/propriator of a book store in New York State, Judy Fine had diappeared into the woodwork of L.A. after divorcing her musician husband, Elaine Gealer was replaced in the group by Jean Amos who, along with Babs Cooper kinda dropped out of sight after the Womenfolk broke up. Leni Ashmore had the distinction of performing in the original cast of the musical "HAIR", produced in L.A. by Tom Smothers. Brent Hardwick

I have my dad's Womenfolk album (I'm listening to it now!). I thought this was their only album until checking on the internet, but even though they were more prolific than I thought, there's still very little info out there about them. Were any of the LP's made into tapes or CD's? My sisters are jealous that I have the one and only album! We used to fall asleep to a stack of folk albums when we were in grade school, The Womenfolk, Kingston Trio, Chad Mitchell Trio, etc.

A sad note for those who do not already know. Joyce James Gibbs, known professionally as Joyce James, died in Newmarket, New Hampshire, in 2001 at the age of 69, shortly after receiving her BA from the University of New Hampshire with a major in Women's Studies. She had worked for the university while taking classes part-time, but did not complete her degree until after she retired. The UNH now gives the Joyce Gibbs Award in her honor. Joyce Gibbs was a feminist religious activist who very involved in both the women's spirituality community of Goddess-worshipping Neo-Pagans and the Unitarian-Universalist Church. She was also involved in mainstream local politics, both in New Hampshire and in New York City where she lived for many years after the Womenfolk broke up.

hey all,
a friend of mine whom i jam with often recently remembered a lullaby his mom used to sing him called rag doll. he thinks it is the version by babs cooper. the lyrics that we know go:
"Rag doll... why are you crying?
Did your life get turned upside down?
Don't you know that little boys are growing?
Little Rag Dolls aren't supposed to frown."
   However after an exhaustive search, we cannot find the lyrics to the rest of this song. does anyone here this song.. and specifically the rest of the lyrics?! I would really really appreciate hearing anything anyone knows. I will check this thread, or i am at [e-mail]

I sure remember them. I had three of their albums. I wish I could find them on CD. They had the most beautiful voices and the most moving song/lyrics I've ever heard. I don't know the exact date of their start, but I DO remember listening to their albums in 1966. I know one can find their albums, used, on the internet, if one searches hard enough. The problem is, they ARE albums, vinyl 33 1/3 rpm records. I'd love to be able to find a remake of any of their albums on CD. If anyone knows, please drop me a note at [e-mail]

I have all of the Womenfolk recordings but never realized that members changed until I happened upon your post. All of your voices were beautiful as were your choice of songs/lyrics. Your music is truly timeless. I was able to finally find a CD of one of the early records and have been playing it on my computer in my office at my university over the prior month. I can't count how many of my students have come to my door to inquire if this music is from a new group and how can they purchase it.

Just wanted to let you know how much the Womenfolk's music has touched so many lives, even in 2007.

Thank you for your interest. I am here, floating in cyberspace, and some of the other Womenfolk are still around, as well. But I can't speak for them.   

"The Womenfolk at the hungry i" is a powerful live-performance album. There are two songs on that album written by Shel Silverstein: HEY NELLY NELLY (Shel Silverstein-Jim Friedman), a civil right song, and FIRST BATTALION (Bob Camp-Shel Silverstein), which an anti-war song, and still appropriate in America today as well as in the 1960s. I found it once, briefly, in stereo, on the old Napster, didn't get it recorded into my library and have still been looking for it, since. Thank both of you so much for your music. In the fall of 1966 I was just getting ready to leave for basic training in the Army. Needless to say, it was a trying time for me. I heard the Womenfolk for the first time on the radio singing "The Last Thing On My Mind", and called the station for the name of the group singing. I immediately went to the Mose's Melody Shop in Little Rock, Arkansas, and bought the album. While stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood during basic training I heard the Womenfolk on the jukebox in our beer garden at the PX. I must have played that song,"The Last Thing On My Mind", a hundred times(Thank goodness it only cost a nickel each time) I still have that album, and have put it on tape so I can listen to it frequently.You, Womenfolk, have been a joy in my life since the first time I heard you at 19; I just hit 60. My wife knows all your songs, too, because I sing them all the time. Thank you for giving me the best music of my life; your music got me through some trying times in my years.

First off, I'm amused that I found this thread. But there must be something in the air. The Womenfolk's music continues to surface. Here's MY story:

I collect records - to the point that I should join "vinyl anonymous".   The collection runs the gambit from turn of the (1900) century Berliner discs and Edison cylinders, to LPs, to CDs - Classical, jazz, swing, rock… you get the picture. I listen to a lot of different stuff.

Anyway, last night in the basement, I was finally digging through several boxes of discs that had been sitting there waiting to be sorted, listened to, filed, or just tossed. And I came across "The Womenfolk" 1964 album. Even though I lean heavy towards classical music, I'll listen to most anything - at least once. (By the way, just by way of reference, I'm 41 and youngest in a large family, so grew up with the sound of the 60s from siblings, and 40s swing from my parents.) I thought I'll throw this disc on, give it listen while I'm sorting through the stacks, and most likely ditch it in the pile headed out the door.

Well, two hours later, I found myself putting it back on the stereo time and time again in-between other records I was sorting. I'm not a real big folk music fan, but your sound was great! I was surprised at how strongly this record held my attention. It's still sitting on the lid of the turntable for when I return.
So, needless to say, I've found yet another group to collect. (Now where am I gonna put another record self?)

Womenfolk members: Your music continues to please, amuse and lift the soul. Many thanks for your music, from a listener who rarely has the opportunity to thank the performer.

I am the long lost Womanfolk... of the long lost Womenfolk....I live in Santa Monica and have only recently started to listen to our albuns again as I transfered them to my Ipod... the harmonies are still current as were the songs... Surprised me to like the music and the singing and performances as much as I did at the time they were recorded.

Babs Cooper called me today... and we spoke for the first time in over 40 years.... now I expect to reach out to Leni and Judy (now Lalah)shortly.

Thank you all for still appreciating our music all these years later... I wrote several of the songs... and I think Babs wrote some as well.

Dee - I think maybe you're confusing Willie Nelson's "Alway on My Mind" with Tom Paxton's "The Last Thing on My Mind" - Hm...very similar titles; never thought of that before. "The Last Thing on My Mind" was a single for "The Womenfolk," as well as on their "Man Oh Man!-The Womenfolk" album, but I don't think they recorded the Willie Nelson song.

Haven't checked in for a while now, but I'm happy to see that this train just keeps on a rollin.' I've been trying to get some of those other Womenfolk to pull up a chair and offer up some threads at the Mudcat Table; glad to get some nibbles from Elaine who, as you see, has been a long time gone.

I just want to let all of you cupids know that your arrows have reached their mark. We hear you. And special thanks to the following Mudcat Café contributors.

To: Andy the vinyl junkie - the collector of 1900 Century Berliner discs and Edison cylinders, and a classical music buff. Thanks for your story; it made me laugh, and for giving The Womenfolk another chance before booting us out the door.

To: Mary Lott - your appreciation of our harmonies is music to our ears.

To: Open Mike – I guess I was just too oblique previously. I was offering to help you get some of those recordings for your radio show; but we need to hear more about it first; what, why, who, where, when, etc. - that kind of info, you know. Knowing that all of you are listening to the our music definitely lifts my spirits. I have been posting threads for years trying to find The Womenfolk...I thought Leni Ashmore had the most amazing voice, When she sang lead on the Malvina Reynolds tune, I Wish your Were Here, I melted. And Babs' lead on Jinga Jing was wonderful. I loved the Hungry I album and I still laugh at "Never Wed an Old Man" And "One Man's Hand" and "Love come Tricklin Down" would still get to me if I had cd's. The harmonies on "Yesterday" from Man oh Man were great.

It is so good to see Elaine and Babs, Judy have been found.

I just wish somebody would bug RCA to release them again. They probably hate me by now!!

I managed to find the following albums: We Give A Hoot with the Villagers; The Womenfolk; Never Underestimate the Power of; Man Oh Man; and At the Hungry I plus the 45 of the Last Thing On My Mind! Are there any others? All are in excellent condition and I am having so much enjoyment playing them! "A group that made a lot of good songs. My favourites One man's hand, and Love come a-trickling down.

I stumbled upon this forum searching for the words to the Malvina Reynolds' song, "I wish you were here", as recorded by the Womenfolk. I was thrilled that so many other people still love this fabulous group. I discovered them back in the Napster days (I don't regret the larceny one bit - how else would I have found them?) and was crushed when their material wasn't available on cd. So I did what a lot of others have done. I bought the records on eBay and made my own very scratchy cds. Their harmonies can make me cry and their song selection was superb. I love them all like sisters. Unlike some other contributors to this forum, I would be willing to pay $80 for their collected works on a clean cd. I hope it happens!!

Hello, Womenfolk. It's the Vinyl Junkie again.

Three months since last I wrote an entry (July 26).   Not only did your self-titled 1964 album make the cut during my night of "purging the superfluous" from that pile of unsorted records, but I'm still listening to it here and there, as the weeks go by. I even introduced (maybe more accurately RE-introduced) the Womenfolk to my oldest brother and his wife. Both have an affinity for folk groups and folk music.

They remembered "Little Boxes" and I have to admit that it was this title that really made me listen to the album, only because I remembered others in the family singing bits and pieces of this song over the years. Amusing social commentary aside, this is not what has held my attention all this time.

In addition to the titles that others have praised here, I have to say that the raw power of "Don't You Rock 'Em Daddy-O" is tremendous. And your arrangement of "The Gypsy Rover" is the best I've heard - possibly my favorite cut on the album. The harmony and blend of your voices is so warm over the lilting guitar work.

Thanks again, for putting the excitement of discovery back into what I feared was becoming a slightly jaded listener/collector.

The Womenfolk and Simon and Garfunkel were the first music I listened to at the age of 2. So their blend and harmonies are ingrained in my music vocabulary. I probably have gone more than 25 years without hearing any of the songs but still sing them to myself when something triggers the memory. This morning I woke up with "The Maybe Song" in my head and now I'm trying to search the internet for the complete lyrics. Nothing. That song was poetry and music combined. Can anyone help me? All I've found was this website and one album on ebay but it's not one of the three that I know by heart.

Holy Cow!! I have died and gone to heaven! I was givin my one and only Womenfolk album in Germany in 1967. I've just about played it thin. It was and is my favorite music by my favorite musicians. As a woman with a big deep voice, it was a revalation to hear that beautiful BIG deep sound comming though loud and clear. I was always hushed up and told to BLEND. I feel Blessed to own my one album. Will await a re-release on cd with great anticipation.

Like others in this thread, I applaud the sincerity of the discussion and celebrate the reappearance of the members of this wonderful group. I, too, hope that there may be an audible outcome in the form of a re-release of their music.

My favourite song? Elaine Gealer's 'Once Upon a Springtime'... a ballad about a young soldier going off to war, never to return. Stunning lyrics that are as relevant and evocative today as the day she wrote them!

For decades I thought I was the only person who knew about the Womenfolk. I spent years getting the five albums that were issued. As far as I know there were only five albums. RCA should be pressured to release the albums on CD or, if not, allow Rhino or other similar labels to make clean copies. I'm tired of listening to the copies made from vinyl.
Pressure from the public helped Warner to release the four mid-70's Gordon Lightfoot albums on CD, the same could happen here.
Everyone who reads this thread, get on the phone to RCA management for nearly forgotten artists and say you wish the above to happen.
Incidentally, the best version of "Sunrise, Sunset" I've heard.

I don't care where the Womenfolk are, but I do want to tell them how much pleasure their music gave me from the first time I heard their song 'Womenfolk' on the BBC back in the 60s. I wish they had recorded more in their folk vein though I don't think their last album I bought was one of their best except 'The Maybe Song'. There is no better verdion of 'The last thing on my mind.' Utterly outstanding. I hope one of them reads this to realise how much pleasure they gave.

I was lucky enough to have seen the Womenfolk live at the Bitter End, in Greenwich Village back in the good ol' days of folk.
They really were a first rate group; good voices, good guitar (I think they had a bass backup player at the Bitter End, not officially part of the group.)

Sad to say, the Bitter End is now "The Longest running ROCK club in New York." (And the hungry i became a strip joint prior to my getting to San Francisco; bummer.)
If anyone buys the personally made $80 CDs from the previously mentioned site, you should make some copies and post their availability. Surely copyright has passed by now.

I am almost happy. Today I bought "Man Oh Man!" from i-tunes. I had never heard the record before. It sounds good.

My true mission is to download the Hungry i album. My late uncle had it (and the LP is probably in my aunt's loft). I loved it so much as a child. Yesterday I tried to download it from Amazon, but they refused to sell me it as I am in the UK!

I hope it will go on i-tunes as I think that's the only way non-US residents can access the albums.

Thanks you for your comment. All of our albums should be on iTunes UK/European Union, as well as iTunes Australia/New Zealand, Canada & Japan by now. We made two tours to the U.K. back then and certainly want to include all of British friends, (and all of our friends around the globe), in presenting our albums as downloads to be enjoyed in 2008. Let us know how it works out. The Hungy i perform is a "live" performance album and best demonstrate what we did "on stage."   Again, thanks for the update.

I got introduced to the Womenfolk in Dec of 1964 on a late night AM radio program called "Guest Star" with Lou Crosby.

"Guest Star" was a program sponsored by the US Savings Bonds. From then, going forward into the 70's I managed to find the debut album from our local library and made a cassette recording.

Since then, I forgot about The Womenfolk ... until into this decade when I stumbled across a "45" with their interesting tune . "Little Boxes in a thrift store.

..which revived my interest in this group. Going on more thrift store ventures, to my surprise, I did find that LP transcription of "Guest Star" mentioned above...and now have a safe copy of that original program.

And, thank goodness with the presence of eBay, I have now 5 copies of their self titled album, plus their "actual" debut album that they recorded with the Villagers.

It's fun to live great memories again ....

I found out about you by doing a Google search for Jean Amos. I had been searching for a copy of Two for the Road (RCA LSP 2244) and after finding one, I was wondering what happened to Jean (and Penny, too). Thomas's tribute page came up in the search and now I am catching up on the music of the Womenfolk. I can't believe I've been missing out on such great recordings and performances for the last 40-plus years. I'm kicking myself for being such an unfocused, easily distracted young teen in those days, succumbing to the British Invasion of sounds while missing so much of those folk era years. Now it is time to catch up. Thank you so much for your beautiful harmonies, melodies, and immensely enjoyable performances. The song "Water Wheel" is a favorite. I know a song is working when I get goose bumps and misty eyed.

I'm one of the lucky few who still have a couple of Womenfolk
albums and have transferred most of them to tape and even had
a friend transfer some selections to CD. Stumbled on their music back in the late sixties when I played cuts of their albums on the radio here in Canada and by the time I fell in love with their music they had already disbanded and I've been searching yard sales and thrift shops for their albums ever since. I too have always wondered what happened to them and it's nice to hear they've gotten back together even if it's just to socialize and reminisce.. have spent many hours with their sensational harmonies, terrific voices and
wonderful lyrics and they always bring a smile,and brighten my day.
Specially enjoy their anti-war stuff like "Hey Nelly Nelly" and "First Battalion" from their Hungry i album. To the WOMENFOLK members= "Thank You" for the pleasure you've given me over the last 40+ years and all the BEST in the future !

I have always enjoyed the memory of your appearance on British TV back in the 60s as a result of which I quite naturally fell in love with all of you and immediately went and bought the LP's which I still treasure today.Have always regretted not seeing you live but finding this website bridges 40 odd years of highly enjoyable listening to your special brand of music. The Womenfolk were on Ed Sullivan Show #810, November 22, 1964, and performed "Sail Away" and "Rock-Em Daddy-o", according to The Ed Sullivan Show episode guide.

If you read this, could you please answer two questions about your album, Penny and Jean - Two for the Road? What is the instrument that starts out "I Never Will Marry"? Is it a woman's voice or a musical saw? And what are the words at the beginning of the chorus to "Old Banshee":

I don't know why I felt I was the only one that ever heard of The Womenfolk. Fot an awful long time most people I talked to just shook there heads no when I asked if they had ever heard their music. My love affair with them started in the 60s. When I found The Mudcat everything changed, I found other "Womenfolkers" and have downloaded every soung they have made available on the net. I wore out two of their "Never Underestimate The Power Of The Womenfold" albums and thought I would never have the pleasure of hearing the rest. Their exceptional blending of harmony brought chills to your body when listening to them. oh sure there were and are other groups that sing well and harmonize, but there will never be another group like "The Womenfolk". They had a real quality that will never be equaled again. They made a lonely and borng tour of duty in the Aluetian Islands more bearable. To them I send my sincere thanks for a talent seldom seen or heard in the music business. God Bless you all.

Thanks for the thoughts, we're enjoying them. The instrument which opens "I never will marry" is a theramin, of all things. The odd word in the chorus of "Banshee" is wiieera - a nonsense word? Gaelic? Don't know.

Wow guys - such accolades! Your enthusiasm for our sound and our act continues to blow me away. The perspective that comes with the passage of time has proven that we did indeed have something very special to offer back then and the sound still holds today. Its just that trying to hold five alpha-females together, (all of whom sang, looked good enough & played guitar), was a daunting task as your can imagine. Be that as it may, I, for one, have been thoroughly enjoying all of the cyberspace activity around our group since Thomas Otto first stirred thing up (and got us talking to each other again) in 2007 with his original Tribute to The Womenfolk:

At this point, every recording we ever made is now available on Amazon.com/MP3 Downloads, and The iTunes Store – including the long lost singles: My Heart Tells Me To Believe & The Way I Feel. Now comes the discussion about the television shows: Red Skelton, Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen, Hullabaloo, Mike Douglas and one of my favorites, The BBC's – Tonight in Person. So we are continuing to piece together this patchwork quilt of our time together. But, its not easy because we're on our own, and of course we're all trying to survive in our present day lives. At least three of us really want to start performing again even though time and distance and issues around the almighty dollar have been getting in our way.

But, be that as it may, all of you are so sweet. Thank you for your on-going support. A belated thank you for the words to the song (I haven't visited this site for a while). Of course I now have been able to download them and have them at hand. Please indulge me when I say that as a 2-3 year old (odd as it sounds) these songs sunk to the core of me "time after time without reason or rhyme as I thought of the days to follow". I have never heard harmonies and blends just like that - before or since. I'm hapy to have access to them again!

Every couple years for the last 10 years I have done a websearch for "The Womenfolk" and turned up nothing. Which was disappointing because their albums were a part of my upbringing. I still have the original "Womenfolk" vinyl and it is playing now. I enjoyed reading this and reading thru the various blogs and look forward to a 5-CD set by the 2009 Holidays.

I remember listening to a recording you made of "Honest I Do" back in the 1960s. It was far superior in quality and feeling to the chart-making version by The Innocents.

Is there a copy of this song performed by you still available?

I have searched many years for any news of you. Today, I was delighted to find your artistry with "The Womenfolk" on MySpace. Excellent work. Please consider a reunion recording session of additional songs.

Joyce James (Gibbs) was my neighbor and good friend in Brooklyn and later in New Hampshire. I just found this forum and am fascinated to hear of all the recent activity. I'm so sorry she's not around to share in the "revival!"

Babs, I posted here several years ago re: Spectropop (www.spectropop.com) and your Indigo Records release of "Honest I Do," which is different from but as enjoyable as The Innocents' original version. Now coms a Spectropop inquiry from someone about a song youdid, "How Am I Gonna Leave You?" He'd like to know if it's really you, the year of release, what label it was on, and any other infoirmation a music fan would get excited about. I wore out the first album and finally tracked down good copies of everything they recorded. They always struck me as the female version of the Limeliters, never quite sure whether to be Folk or Contemporary, and never able to have a real hit. Their first album is still their best. It's great to know that they went on to have wonderful, productive lives.

I first heard The Womenfolk on the TV program "Hootenanny" back in the summer of 1966 (I think). The date is foggy, but their performance glued me to my chair. The song they sang was "The Last Thing On My Mind". From the beginning chords I was mesmerized. I didn't know people could sing like that. I remember how they sat, the words they sang, even what they wore. They helped a little girl realize there was beauty in the human voice and I've been singing ever since. Ladies - I bow to you!

I think I remember seeing The Womenfolk on the old Joey Bishop show and they sang "Hey Nelly Nelly", and "The Ballad of Murder Incorporated" very deadpan in their presentation of the later- quite fun.
It is so good to see that folks still remember them, and they have good lives.
I also think I remember "The Best is Yet to Come" used in a commercial, or am I bongers.
