11 Oct 01 - 11:19 AM (#569775) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: Steve Latimer 'Spaw, Am I sensing a new wing at the centre? I have to say, I'm not a huge fan, but I thought I'd post this as I know there are a number of fans here who would probably like to know about this. Perhaps one of them wil pose the question.

11 Oct 01 - 11:25 AM (#569780) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: catspaw49 Well Steve there has been talk of a "Research Center on the Bizarrely Symbolic" but funding meetings are not proceeding well since no one knows what anyone else is talking about. Spaw |
11 Oct 01 - 12:08 PM (#569802) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: Steve Latimer 'Spaw, I'll join the funding team, but we will have to meet at Toe Blake's tavern in Montreal for quarts of Laurentide. Perhaps we could even get old Len to join us, although (and this is a true story, it was on CBC television) the last I saw of him he was some sort of monk in California. |

11 Oct 01 - 03:38 PM (#569971) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: Steve Latimer Allright, I'll confess. I have only ever really heard his older material. I found his songwriting to be very good. I found the mood to be pretty damned depressing. |
11 Oct 01 - 06:12 PM (#570093) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: Lanfranc LC rocks - or at least he used to! Old, middle period, latest (up to "The Future") - some brilliant, some just plain good, some clunkers. "songs to slash your wrists to", maybe, but I've sung his songs for thirty-five years with no ill-effects to me or the audience. It's even a sensible time for the UK - 4pm EST = 9pm BST I'll be there, if at all possible.

11 Oct 01 - 10:01 PM (#570197) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: Stewie I certainly have my order in for Cohen's first album of new songs in nine years that is to be released some time this month - 'Ten New Songs' Columbia. According to the Village Records new releases sheet for October, the new album is all love songs Cohen style. In respect of the 'monk' reference above, he is into Zen. There is a photo of him in his robes with his Zen master, Roshi, in Ira B. Nadel's 'Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen'. --Stewie. |
11 Oct 01 - 11:15 PM (#570234) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: rangeroger I am a Leonard Cohen fan also.Have been since his first album.I will admit that his novels are a little strange. Just rewatched McCabe and Mrs. Miller the other night. Tremendous vehicle for his songs. rr |
12 Oct 01 - 08:08 PM (#570912) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: GUEST,JTT Ten New Songs is fantastic - especially the track Alexandra Leaving, which John Kelly's been playing on Mystery Train on RTE radio for some weeks now. You might be able to listen to Mystery Train on www.rte.ie, I'm not sure. I've always been fond of his music - which I don't find depressing, though his voice has a gloomy timbre. But who else could write lines like
"A bunch of lonesome and very quarrelsome heroes or (from Alexandra Leaving):
"And you who had the honour of her evening or, from the same song,
"Do not choose a coward's explanation or the mise-en-scene, again from Alexandra Leaving:
"As someone long prepared for this to happen Besides, Lennie writes the best seduction music. Ask any old roue. |

17 Oct 01 - 03:57 AM (#574008) Subject: RE: Leonard Cohen Live Chat Oct 16 From: Dunc Cohen the King!!!! The man is in a class all of his own. I ordered his new CD "Ten New Songs" without knowing anything about the songs on it. If it disappoints me it will be the first time - and I am the proud owner of many LC CDs. As far as I am aware, he has not toured since he released "The Future". Any news of him going out on the road with this album? He is my only musical hero that I have never seen live. At 67 he may not feel up to the rigours of touring. Bags I the first ticket if he does though! |
