Tune Req: Glencoe (J Scott Skinner)

Subject: Scott Skinner's 'Glencoe'
From: Scabby Douglas

Can anyone give me the music (dots, abc, midi, Noteworthy, whatever) for J Scott Skinner's "Glencoe"?

I've looked around the Net but can't find it so far..

Please note - it's not the tune to the song "the Massacre of Glencoe" - it's a slow air.

I have a recording of Richard Thompson playing it on electric guitar. But I suspect that he may be taking some liberties with the melody, to accomodate the guitar.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

Steven

Is it the same one recorded by Nic Jones? I.e a 'broken token/lover returns unrecognised' song

You're thinking of The Pride of Glencoe, Pavane.  Skinner's piece is an air in E Flat Major, and appeared in his book The Scottish Violinist, which is in print and obtainable (for example) from  ScotlandsMusic.com.

I can't find notation online, and I don't have a copy myself.

Thanks for looking, Malcolm, and Pavane - Malcolm's right about the one I'm looking for BTW...
(sigh..) I was hoping I could get it online ... I'll see if any of my fiddler acquaintances have this.. or .. I may just have to go and buy it... eeeeeek!

Cheers

Steven

Richard Thompson recorded it on the CD "Strict Tempo" if that's any help.

Thanks Guest, if you'll look at my original post, you'll see that I not only knew that, but already have that recording.... but thanks you all the same

Cheers

Hi, Scabby Doug. I tried here and got 2 matches. Unfortunately, the site runs hellishly slow on my system, so I can't confirm if it's the right one. Worth a try, though. Cheers.

Unfortunately, that site won't provide any help that can't be found elsewhere; all the material there is copied from other sites (including the DT), and partially re-formatted without much of the background information, and rarely with sources acknowledged.  I am unimpressed by that sort of plagiarism, however good it might appear superficially.

If you're still needing the music, Doug, I have it now, courtesy of my friend Cath James, who kindly copied it for me from Skinner's book.  You can get at a midi and a gif of the notation via the  South Riding Folk Network  site:

Glencoe midi
Staff notation

The midi doesn't give a terribly good rendition without the expressions, of course; just a rough guide.  The staff also includes a variation for the final two bars.

Malcolm,
Cantrip was only trying to help. My apologies if you weren't meaning to be rude but that's how it looks to us

In what way do you think I was being rude to Cantrip?  He (or she) made it clear that it wasn't possible to load the site, and so was not in a position to do any more than offer a potentially helpful suggestion, for which we should be grateful.  As it happens, I do know the site in question, and so was in a position to make informed comments about it.  My criticism, by which I stand, was clearly aimed at the site and not at Cantrip; I don't see anything in what I said that might be imagined to suggest otherwise.  By all means criticise me, but please do be sure that it's for something worthwhile.

I meant that it was a brusque and dismissive answer to a new Mudcatter's 2nd or 3rd post which is not the best way to keep members for any length of time.
Cantrip would have taken it up himself but he was downstairs making dinner and is now away out for the evening.
I do think this is a worthwhile point to make though, the format of discussion forums means you have to be explicit or else things can easily be taken the wrong way (see above :-) ). A simple 'thanks for trying though' would have done the trick, as it stood it was quite off-putting.

7th post, but we don't need to argue the toss about that.  Yes, I do take the point, and I didn't mean to be off-putting, but, as I said, I was obviously talking about the site, which Cantrip hadn't been able to look at.  The fact that I consider that particular site to be worthless for any serious enquirer is completely irrelevant to Cantrip's kind contribution, and I don't see how my opinion of the site could possibly be thought to reflect upon him; after all, as he made clear, he wasn't in a position to check it out.

If you've read some of my posts, you might have noticed that I tend to try to answer the question asked as directly as possible; if I refer to a post preceding my own, it is with good reason and should never be imagined to be some sort of personal slight.  If I have offended him, then I can only apologise for that; it was not my intention.  There are only so many hours in the day, however, and my intent is to help people to find the information they are looking for in what is inevitably a limited amount of time (that staff transcription was not made instantly) and I can't be putting smileys all over the place just in case.  If you don't like my style, then you're at liberty to see if you can do better.  [Just this once, then: :>)]

We have already taken up enough space in this thread; please feel free to pm me if you want to discuss it further.  That might have been the best thing to do in the first place, but I'd far rather we could meet up for a few drinks some time; I'm a lot easier to get on with than you might think.

I missed this refresh - thanks to all for all your efforts. Been completely unable to get at mudcat last couple of days....

Thank you all so much....

Steven

(Hey - I just noticed that my cookie came back of its own accord)

Malcolm, please thank your friend for her efforts. This is very much appreciated. As I said, I had a recording of Richard Thompson playing this on electric guitar. He hasn't taken all that many liberties (I can now see).. but I couldn't rely on it as a source for the tune..

Thanks again

Steven
