I've looked around the Net but can't find it so far.. I have a recording of Richard Thompson playing it on electric guitar. But I suspect that he may be taking some liberties with the melody, to accomodate the guitar. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks

Skinner's piece is an air in E Flat Major, and appeared in his book The Scottish Violinist, which is in print and obtainable (for example) from ScotlandsMusic.com. I can't find notation online, and I don't have a copy myself. |

I am unimpressed by that sort of plagiarism, however good it might appear superficially.
If you're still needing the music, Doug, I have it now, courtesy of my friend Cath James, who kindly copied it for me from Skinner's book. You can get at a midi and a gif of the notation via the South Riding Folk Network site:
The midi doesn't give a terribly good rendition without the expressions, of course; just a rough guide. The staff also includes a variation for the final two bars. |

He (or she) made it clear that it wasn't possible to load the site, and so was not in a position to do any more than offer a potentially helpful suggestion, for which we should be grateful. As it happens, I do know the site in question, and so was in a position to make informed comments about it. My criticism, by which I stand, was clearly aimed at the site and not at Cantrip; I don't see anything in what I said that might be imagined to suggest otherwise. By all means criticise me, but please do be sure that it's for something worthwhile. |

Cantrip would have taken it up himself but he was downstairs making dinner and is now away out for the evening. I do think this is a worthwhile point to make though, the format of discussion forums means you have to be explicit or else things can easily be taken the wrong way (see above :-) ). A simple 'thanks for trying though' would have done the trick, as it stood it was quite off-putting. |

Yes, I do take the point, and I didn't mean to be off-putting, but, as I said, I was obviously talking about the site, which Cantrip hadn't been able to look at. The fact that I consider that particular site to be worthless for any serious enquirer is completely irrelevant to Cantrip's kind contribution, and I don't see how my opinion of the site could possibly be thought to reflect upon him; after all, as he made clear, he wasn't in a position to check it out.
If you've read some of my posts, you might have noticed that I tend to try to answer the question asked as directly as possible; if I refer to a post preceding my own, it is with good reason and should never be imagined to be some sort of personal slight. If I have offended him, then I can only apologise for that; it was not my intention. There are only so many hours in the day, however, and my intent is to help people to find the information they are looking for in what is inevitably a limited amount of time (that staff transcription was not made instantly) and I can't be putting smileys all over the place just in case.
