Does anyone have the words to John Connoly's "Ranters Wharf" I have tried the usual search on the didital tradition but nothing seems to be there?

On Ranter's Wharf the sun went sailing down
Like an old square-rigger bound for sea once more,
And in the murmur of the evening tide,
I heard a small voice crying, crying on the shore.

I found her weeping by the waterside,
And the evening shadows like a cloak she wore.
"O Betsy Watson is my name, kind sir.
I'm here to seek my Johnny, Johnny on the shore.

"My Johnny was a handsome sailor lad
And I lost him in the gale of ninety-four,
His vessel broken on the midnight sand,
And here they found him lying, lying on the shore.

"I watch the seasons come and go, kind sir,
And I'm waiting still, for what can I do more?
Sometimes I think my Johnny's calling me
When I hear the seagulls crying, crying on the shore."

On Ranter's Wharf the tide is turning now.
When the moon came through, no silver girl I saw,
And was I dreaming, or a drunken man,
When I heard a seagull crying, crying on the shore.

With compliments,

Gerry

I've got the dots, MMario, and I'll get them to you if nothing better transpires.

I was intending to post these words as we were discussing this lovely song in Whitby this weekend- how strange.

On Ranter's Wharf the sun went sailing down
Like an old square-rigger bound for sea once more;
And in the murmur of the evening tide
I heard a small voice crying...crying on the shore

I found her weeping by the waterside
And the evening shadows like a cloak she wore-
"O Betsy Walton is my name, kind sir-
I'm here to seek my Johnny...Johnny on the shore."

"My Johnny was a handsome sailor-lad,
And I lost him in the gale of 'ninety-four-
His vessel broken on the midnight sand,
And here they found him lying...lying on the shore."

"I watch the seasons come and go, kind sir.
And I'm waiting still, for what can I do more?
Sometimes I think my Johnny's calling me-
When I hear the seagulls crying...crying on the shore."

On Ranter's Wharf the tide was turning now;
When the moon came through, no silver girl I saw-
And was I dreaming, or a drunken man-
When I heard a seagull crying...crying on the shore…

"Ranter's Wharf" is a dockside alley off Grimsby's Victoria Street. It always seemed like a good title for a song, and eventually this one emerged; it is based on the traditional belief that the souls of drowned seamen are transmuted into seagulls.

From The Singing River; songs by John Conolly and Bill Meek published 1985.

I hope this doesn't result in a blue clicky and a put down. I expected to find it easily but have so far failed. It does not show on the alpha. list, and I searched under Ranter*, Wharf, seagull* , old square, but nothing.

no problem Keith - glad you were able to find it. the alpha list is titles that are in the copy of the DT ; whereas the other search features pull from either the DT or the forum or BOTH

Darn. I have a deathly-slow Internet connection this morning because I'm trying to download the Star Wars trailer for my stepson. The Ranter's Wharf thread has it. I'll consolidate the two threads sooner or later.

Sorry to make you do a merge.
I did search both forum and DT MMario, but only worked when I tried the filter.
I have nothing on the song Joe, except I first heard it long before the publication date given in Noreen's post. I had it on a Yetties album I think in late 60's, certainly not much after1970. It also had Banks of Newfoundland, Watchet Sailor, and the one that goes open the pane and put out the flame..
The tune and fragments have been in my head ever since. Recent posts reminded me of it so I decided to learn it all.
I have it straight now, so I will have them crying into their beer at the White Horse on Monday!
Dreaming or drunken,
Keith.

Undoubtedly this was written many years before 1985, Keith; that was merely the publication date of the book. Dating John Conolly/Bill Meek songs is difficult as the Broadside LPs seem to be undated (I couldn't see any date on them anyway).

Lovely song.

I am presently in St.Agnes, Cornwall where my brother is on the launch crew of the lifeboat.
On Tuesday night someone phoned in a report of hearing pitiful cries and calls for help from below the cliffs at Portreath. The lifeboat was launched and the Coastguard turned out, but they found nobody. Only the gulls.
Sometimes, I think....
Keith.
