JESUS GOIN' MAKE UP MY DYIN' BED I

O---h, high in de mountain, (3 times)
Jesis goin' make up my dyin' bed.

Jesus, I bin in the valley,
Yes, I bin in the valley,
Yes, I bin in the valley,
Jesus goin' make up my dyin' bed

Oh, Lord, I'm kneelin' 'umble,
O---h, I'm kneelin' 'umble,
O---h, I'm kneelin' 'umble,
Jesus goin' make up my dyin' bed.

When you see me dyin', I don't want you to cry,
All I want you to do for me is to lower my dyin' eyes.

A---h, sleepin' in Jesus, (3 times)
Jesus goin' make up my dyin' bed.

O---h, cover me over, etc.

Well, behind the mountains,
'Way behind the mountains,
O---h, behind the mountains,
Jesus goin' make up my dyin' bed.

Well, when you see me dyin', I don't want you to mourn,
All I wants you to do is to give that bell a tone.

O---h, goin' on to Jesus, etc.

Oh, children, down on my knees, etc.

Well, when you see me Jesus, (recording incomplete)

Sung by Dock Reed, Vera Hall, Jesse Allison; Livingston, Alabama. John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip.

JESUS GOIN' MAKE UP MY DYIN' BED II

Oh, don't you mind me dyin', (3 times)
Jesus goin' make up my dyin' bed.

Oh, I got good religion, etc.

In the hour of dyin', don't want nobody to cry,
All I want you to do for me is jes' close my dyin' eye.

Oh, don't you be uneary, etc.

In the hour of dyin', somebody will say I'm lost,
Just come on down to Jordan and Jesus will tell you I've crossed.

Then I'll be crossin' on over, etc.

When I go down to the river, I'm goin' jes' like a man,
Unbuckle my sword from around my waist an' stick it in the golden sand.

Then I'll be gone on to glory, etc.

Sung by J. H. Anderson, Boyd, AL.
Verses added by J. H. Boyd (taken from another song?):

Saul was on his way to Damascus, he was a wicked man,
Just before he reached the city, they were leading him by the hand.

The power of God fell on old Saul, just like on you and I,
Just before he reached the city, I heard him begin to cry.

The link works fine, Dicho. Are the lyrics transcribed somewhere on the Library of Congress site, or are you doing the transcription on your own?

The Lomax transcriptions are in their notes. Check the date of the recording. Then go the the link to their field notesRight here. You have to skip around but. Guessing from the dates I went to p.200 & found I was earlier in May so then tried p.225 & it was right on. There might be a link that goes directly to the page, but I don't have time to see if you'd be able to navigate from page to page, which you'd want to do.

I don't have time to write up in what I've just figured out about navigating the site. Do take a look at Linking & Bookmarking in American Memory

There's an easier way. From the field notes go to the Full text (I went to the page images), then the Table of Contents to get to the section you want. In this case it's Section 17 You can still get to the page images for yourself.

Sometimes the record jackets have added notes so make sure to look at those as well.

I went through the full text of the fieldnotes and copied pages pertinent to spirituals. Most of the notes are incomplete or, in some cases, words are misheard or out of order. From the index I selected spirituals and got 131 items (some are duplicate, some have no notes). From the index I went to the sound recordings and took the versions I post from them, adding from the notes if useful.

It was an interesting exercise. The Lomax team wanted to hear dialect; if you listen to the songs, there may be no dialect (only the sloppy speech most of us exercise) but the notes are written in dialect. That becomes dat, chilly becomes chiller, the becomes de, etc.,etc. Only in some of the prison tunes does what I would call dialect (and in small, inconsistent amounts) appear. I think I somewhat hit between the two extremes.

Later on in the spirituals project there will be an index. Just how WYSIWYG wants to handle that I think will appear in time.

There're a lot of variants. As "In My Time of Dying", CLICK HERE. Blind Willie Johnson's sound clip is HERE and HERE.

To add to Dicho's remarks about the Lomax stuff he is pulling from-- I don't tink we have fully understood how much has gone into the ones he's getting from there, from the singers, the Lomaxes, and from Dicho to wade through it all. The ONE I did from there involved extensive checking between the field notes, the lyrics they included elsewhere in the site, and the recordings. The small differences add to the richness of the songs. VERY good work, Dicho.

Yes we have an index-- I am working now on adding into it all the finds Dicho has posted.

Masato, thanks for adding in the Blind Willie Johnson version and sites, it's a 'holy blues' standard.

Good Lord, When I Die
I'm Gwine to Heaven When I die
I Want To Go To Heaven
'Til I Die

I've heard Charley Patton's version. Can't make out what the heck he's saying.
