Then go the the link to their field notesRight here. You have to skip around but. Guessing from the dates I went to p.200 & found I was earlier in May so then tried p.225 & it was right on. There might be a link that goes directly to the page, but I don't have time to see if you'd be able to navigate from page to page, which you'd want to do. From the field notes go to the Full text (I went to the page images), then the Table of Contents to get to the section you want. In this case it's Section 17 You can still get to the page images for yourself. Sometimes the record jackets have added notes so make sure to look at those as well.

Most of the notes are incomplete or, in some cases, words are misheard or out of order. From the index I selected spirituals and got 131 items (some are duplicate, some have no notes). From the index I went to the sound recordings and took the versions I post from them, adding from the notes if useful. It was an interesting exercise. The Lomax team wanted to hear dialect; if you listen to the songs, there may be no dialect (only the sloppy speech most of us exercise) but the notes are written in dialect. That becomes dat, chilly becomes chiller, the becomes de, etc.,etc. Only in some of the prison tunes does what I would call dialect (and in small, inconsistent amounts) appear. I think I somewhat hit between the two extremes. |

The ONE I did from there involved extensive checking between the field notes, the lyrics they included elsewhere in the site, and the recordings. The small differences add to the richness of the songs. VERY good work, Dicho. Yes we have an index-- I am working now on adding into it all the finds Dicho has posted. ~Susan |
