You people all know me as a Lightfoot fan, and I am, but I have been known to listen to other good folk music too. I thought that many of you might be interesting in knowing that The Cumberland Trio has "finally" released their first CD, recorded more than 37 years ago.

As many of you may know, The Cumberland Trio is a wonderful 60s folk group that some of us remember hearing back then (well, those of us who are old enough and are willing to admit it). Among other things, they appeared on national TV on the old Hootenany show, a showcase of folk talent.

They recorded an album, set for release in 1964, but then the record company went bankrupt and the recordings sat on the shelf for all these years. Luckily, one of the trio, Jerre Haskew (a big Lightfoot fan) managed to rescue them, and some other recordings from additional sessions, and has finally brought this wonderful music to the marketplace. The 14 original album tracks were recorded at RCA Studios in Nashville, and were produced by Chet Atkins. And they sound it.

Most of the songs are traditional folk; beautifully done. Plus there are several original songs, some by Jerre and his wife. One in particular, A Lion Named Sam is a wonderful children's song, which has also been separately released as a CD/book combination. It's really beautiful and would make a great holiday gift for some special child on your list.

The Cumberland Trio has a web site at http://cumberlandtrio.com . There are clips of all the tracks, plus six full song recordings from the CD (including A Lion Named Sam and some great traditional tunes). And there is even a bonus track available only online.

Visit the web site and see what you think. Enjoy!

Refresh so as to not let a music thread die while discussions of profanity and non-music television programming continue to grow...

For those who remember with fondness the "folk scare" of the 50's & 60's, try this site. www.cumberlandtrio.com The story is interesting and they have ample samples of their music. I wonder how many other groups crashed at the same time, just before they "made it"?
