SOX hanging on the mantlepiece waiting for Santa to arrive.

SAX music playing on the stereo to set the mood - Kenny whatsisname.

SEXy thoughts while kissing Santa (or Mary Christmas) under the mistletoe - have a look at the pix of my hubby - then you'll know why I'd be kissing "Santa".

& SIX??

Six reindeer? Where are the others? Six elves? Six Santa's Helpers? Six geese a-laying?

GUEST: By 10 reindeer, I'm guessing you mean Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner (a.k.a. Donder), Blitzen, Rudolph and Olive. Am I correct?

And of course you knew that all the reideer were really female. Did I get that in an email or was it posted here?

No -- *I* live with Santa Claus (Curmudgeon) -- or else he looks like Karl Marx (Santa Claus = Karl Marx anyway ;-) -- red suit, spreading the weath, etc.) or perhaps Whittier, the poet.

Okay, Mary, I'll bite: No, I didn't know that all the reindeer are really female.... What's the punch line?

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa THREAD PART SOX SAX SEX SIX
From: Mary in Kentucky

Sharon, I can't find the joke! I hate to spoil it, but all I can remember is that it has something to do with losing antlers (females are the only ones who have antlers at Christmastime) and also some line about hauling a fat man all over the world in one night without getting lost. But I've searched my email jokes and can't find it!

Well Fortunato my friend, I'm glad you liked the gifts!! After I signed my name in a post, I went to my wife and told her I needed to switch Santees! I thought I blew it! I still may have but, name wise, but hopefully I threw you off the trail with those few little lies. I'm glad I didn't switch, this has been a lot of fun. Now we need to pick a spot somewhere in the middle of the two of us and throw back a pint or two. After all, we're not that far from each other!!! And we can use the beer book for suggestions!!!

Take Care,
Frank

Pseudo, We'll look for an opportunity to do that. I have a grand son that lives in Elkton, MD. We get up that way from time to time, though usually he comes to stay with us. We might get out to the Delaware shore this summer as well, though that's a bit far off; we like Lewes and Broadkill for us and Bethany/Fenwick with the our herd of teenage boys. I'd love to get togther. If you're traveling down towards Silver Spring, then please let me know. Thanks again, for all and Merry Christmas.

Here's a card from Honeyville, the little village that time forgot:

Dear Secret Santa, how are you by now fine I hope. Deed, I sure did like all the presents you sent. Momma said if we get down to the flatland where my cousin Buford is living, he might have a record player. That girl sure has pretty feet, hee, hee. Mr. Hunnicut the mail carrier said beer was something you drink and came in bottles and cans and was kind of like cider without the dead possum, and would get you real drunk if you could get enough of it. I sure would like try that real special one the feller wrote about, Bud. And the calendar had pictures of some mighty big houses and they was pretty too. There sure are a lot of numbers on it. Well, Ma's a-calling me now, she's out of snuff and I got to take some skins down to the store to trade. Ya'll come up the mountain to see us, Santa, we'll set on the porch and pick. (Play Music)

SharonA,
I should just post a picture dressed up as Santa with a Dunce Hat!! lol!! Still can't believe I signed my real name but hey, every village needs an idiot, I would like to apply for the position here at Mudcat!!!

Reindeer info - Not a joke!

> According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen - had to be a girl.

We should've known. Only women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.

Um... "historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer"? *BG* I assume you mean the history of the rendition and not of the subject matter!

Lemme get this straight: We're talking about flying reindeer – one with a glowing red nose – who live at the North Pole with Santa Claus and his elves at their workshopuntil the reindeer pull Santa's sleigh through the air around the world as they land on the rooftop of every house in the world and wait for Santa to go down the chimney and leave toys and go back up the chimney and do all this in one night...

...and we are trying to determine the gender of the reindeer based on facts about wildlife?

Came home from a job, and found nestled in my mailbox a wonderful surprise from my Secret Santa!

I recieved a wonderful book of Celtic verse (I LOVE all things Celtic!)...here's an excerpt from one of the poems with a Mudcat reference!

THE MYSTERY OF AMERGIN

I am the wind that breathes upon the sea
I am the ocean wave
I am the murmur of the billows.....
....I am a lake in the plain
I am a word of Knowledge....

Well, Amergin, I didn't know all of that about you! I also recieved a great looking recipe for Peppermint pressed cookies that I am going to make this weekend!

Your gift was wonderful Secret Santa, and I can't wait to find out who you are!!!

As for all the reindeer (assuming that the common illustrations of them are acturate) being female -- This conclusion is not the punchline to a joke, but based on biology.

Reindeer are (iirc) the only antlered creatures where both the males and females have a set. The males drop their antlers in the fall, after the rutting season, but the females keep their antlers all through the winter.

Since all the reindeer shown pulling Santa's sleigh on Christmas eve still have antlers, they must all be female...

One of the reindeer got her/his feet wet and thought he was setting sail, but we convinced him/her otherwise, and still he/she looks longingly towards the sandy beaches.

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa THREAD PART SOX SAX SEX SIX
From: Blackcatter

The one thing I've always wondered about Santa's reindeer is are they always reindeer? What I mean is that there is basically two names for them: Reindeer, which appears to be the name of choice in Europe and Asia (by English speakers, of course) and Caribou, which appears to be the name for North America. They officially have different scientific names: Rangifer tarandus & Rangifer caribou, but the Random House Dictionary (unabriged) clearly states that caribou are basically the same animal as reindeer.

Here's the question: If the two names are, for the most part, location oriented, when Santa is in the Americas is Rudolph, Olive & the rest caribou? And to further (possibly) complicate matters... I assume Santa has a fairly big plot of land at the North Pole. If so, technically part of it could be considered to be in the Western Hemisphere. When the reindeer are in that part of the property, are they caribou (and do they have different first names, since the ones they have are generally Germanic in origin, like the term reindeer)?

You may guess that I'm going a little stir crazy here, and am anxiously looking forward to my gift...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL - now go out and kill those turkeys so winter can begin!

OhmigodI'msogladtheForumisbackup!!!!!!! NOW I can set my Secret St. Nick's mind at ease: my present arrived safe and sound (I think... is it supposed to be squishy with cylindrical lumps?) (Marigolds would be squishy, but definitely not hard and cylindrical!)! I picked up the package at the post office yesterday! HOORAY!!! :^) :^) :^) :^) :^)

Presently (ha ha!) the gift is residing comfortably in the toe of an oversized knit stocking, waiting for Christmas Day where I won't see it every day and be tempted to open it before then. Unfortunately, I don't have a mantel to hang it from, so it's hanging from a freestanding shelf unit, on the top shelf of which is my Advent music-box tree (a small artificial tree that rotates on a base with little numbered drawers, each of which contains a tiny ornament to hang on the tree for each of the 24 days leading up to The Big Day)... so technically my present is under my tree! Maybe, when I make room for the larger tree, I can transfer the pressie; but for now the situation works for me!

Thanks again, SS (or SSN), for taking the time to find a gift and going to the expense of sending it overseas! Now, remember, don't go telling me who you are just yet, because I want to wait until Christmas Day to find out!

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa THREAD PART SOX SAX SEX SIX
From: katlaughing

Well, Sharon, you're more disciplined than I am! I was on the phone with Night Owl, yesterday, when Rog walked in with a HUGE computer monitor box and said "Who do we know who lives in Ohio? Is this from Spaw?"

I looked at the name and addy and said, "No, it's not Spaw, it's HOLLOWFOX!!" Oh, joy! My SS pressies had arrived. How could I ever have doubted that I had a SS?!! "Yes, Virginia, there really is..."

Now, Night Owl heard all of this and egged me on, YES, you did, N.O.!! SO, never one to stand on ceremony, I opened it while she was on the phone, it was so much fun, almost as though a room of Mudcatters was here with me, having a blast.

First, I opened a small package with a LOVELY BLUE book in it. I've already started reading it and would recommend it as a book of magical prose and loving story to everyone. "The Blue Cat of Castle Town" by Catherine Cate Coblentz. HOLLOWFOX, I can well understand this book having a profound effect and I've only just started it! It is so precious, the little kitten learning the river's song and so much more. Just the opening paragraphs endeared the author and characters to my heart. THANK YOU!!

Then I opened a small envelope which had been sent separately. It was a tape Hollowfox had told me about a while back. She'd picked it up for me knowing how interested I am in songs of West Virginia during the Civil War, where my ancestors were. This tape is INCREDIBLE!! It is field recordings done between 1976 and 1994, stories and songs told by the genuine folks, some of them only known in those specific families. It is really incredible, though I don't have much stories from those relatives, this tape gives me an idea of what it was like; it's as though someone threw me a line back into my family's history, or opened a window. I really am too choked up to really explain it well. Thank you, HF.

Then, I went back to the BIG box and opened a smaller box, within which was a chunk of rock! I LOVE it!! Ya know I collect stones, anyway, and I'll tell more about it in just a minute.

I had come to the BIG package. Wrapped very nicely in Christmas paper. It was sort of misshapen and heavy. All of this time, Night Owl and I are laughing and talking with joy about this cool SS stuff, then I ripped the paper off. Now I know Hollowfox is as crazy as the rest of us! She sent me 18 lbs of CAT FOOD!!! That brought the cats running, although they were already interested in the crackly paper. I suddenly had cats crawling all over the box and N.O. and I were laughing hysterically.

THEN, I find a card in the bottom which says, "Open the packages first, then open this envelope." So, I open it and the first thing she says is the cat food was "just a diversion!" LOL!!

Find out the stone is a piece of flint from Flint Ridge, Ohio's state rock, and also part of a trade network, about 500 years ago, among the native peoples, trading their flint out in Yellowstone, for obsidian, and down in the Gulf of Mexico, for shells and shark's teeth! It has a great "feel" to it and now sits in front of my monitor with a few other special stones.

Hollowfox, so much thought and care, thank you so much. What a wonderful surprise! That little blue cat has already stolen my heart, esp. as I can readily envision Castle Town, VT in my mind, having seen so many little similar villages while living in New England, but NONE with such a beautiful legend.

I really cannot tell you how much this means to me, nor express enough thanks. Just wonderful, fun, and so thoughtful!

luvyakat!

Wow! How cool!!! The cat food idea is quite brilliant.

Well, kat, I wouldn't call my behavior "disciplined" so much as determined to make it as pleasant a Christmas Day as possible. This is one of the few present-exchanges I do anymore. Even the boss I had who gave nice little packages at Christmastime (who's from Britain too, by the way) has retired and moved to a faraway state. So it's nice to have something I know I can look forward to!

I'm thinking it's time I got involved with a soup kitchen, or helping with Toys for Tots, or something. Any other suggestions of charities that have Christmas Day activities?

Sharon

Senior Citizen centers and homes. Many have no one to remember them for the holiday. Same goes for group homes for learning disabled adults.

Hey Kat - you hit the kittyload is appears! Way to go Hollowfox - talk about amking someone's day - and it's not often that a Fox makes a Kat's day...

Though, I have to admit I once dated a fox who was a Kat and I'm a Cat that's kind of a bear... but then again, I really like birds too - espcially English and Irish birds.

anyway - I know, I have a SS who can't make it to the Mudcat terribly often and it really makes me feel good to see everyone getting woderful, THOUGHFUL, gifts.

Sharon, I'm in the same boat - I only get a present from two people each year - long-time friends and the presents are always simple, candles and the such. It looks as if I am going to Christmas dinner at friends' house again, but this time it should be good. My best friend who usually travels to Chicago for a family Christmas is staying in town and she and her wonderful daughter have been invited to the same Christmas dinner as I - and get this, the whole group there absolutely love Celtic music like I do! Should be good this year without too much empty feelings...

Blackcatter: I'm very happy to hear that you have some plans in place for an enjoyable Christmas with such good friends! I was growing concerned that you might not have. Hope you get to play lots of music! (P.S. – Yeah, 18 pounds of cat food will create quite a kittyload!)

Mary (SINSULL): Thanks for the suggestions! Years ago I used to go carolling with a church group on Christmas Eve, and we'd stop at several area nursing homes to sing.... then they started discouraging us from coming because they said we got the residents excited, and so we created more work for the staff when it was time to get the residents ready for bed. So I don't know how receptive they would be to Christmas Day visitors, but it's certainly worth considering. Anyone else have more suggestions?

I have finally sent my Secret Santa gift off today! I hope the recipient will be well-pleased. It's all local (legal!) stuff from my pocket of the globe.

Mary, I took a photo of the Spanish dinner I made from the faboo cookbook Mrrzy sent me, and I hope to get the film off to the shop in the next couple of days.

The dinner was GREAT. We had beef tenderloins with this bleu cheese topping, homemade potato chips with garlic butter (decided next time, I'm going to buy me a REAL fryer), mixed-greens salad, and a lovely red Chilean wine (Escudo Rojo. Try it.) For dessert we had Catalan Creme, which is a custard flavored with lemon and cinnamon. It was all easy to make. And the background music was splendid!

Next stop: Spanish Bean Soup.

(man, I can't wait to see what Pseudolus is getting!)

Frankly, while not haveing a family isn't the best, I'd rather have no family than suffer the heartbreak that so many people do with dysfuntional families that only hurt them.

Hee, hee, hee!1 Actually, Ned Ludd had some good points to make, but his eponym has come to mean something else entirely. What made the name change on the 'Cat a P.I.A. was that I had to do it on my breaks at work. That, and trying to write in a different speech pattern than usual. < As you delivery box shows (it was a diversion as well), I can now access the 'Cat here at home!! Whee! (Now to download Realplayer, get a microphone for Paltalk, etc.) BTW, except for the mailing costs, I stayed *under budget*, since I had an extra copy of the book. (brag, brag)

To my SS: "Franked"? What does Pseudolus have to do with it? ;^) Seriously, I don't know what the term means. There IS an address stamped on the package, but no postmark as I'm used to seeing in the US.

Thanks again! Now, if I can only ignore that little voice coming from the stocking that says "Open meeee... oooopennnn meeeeeeee......."

I had to fill in my name on the customs chit on the exterior of my package, so if my santee would like to open before the big day, I'll quite understand ;-)

Ah, so that explains the going into a phone booth and coming out as Santa being difficult, Hollowfox. *grin* Totally understandable and the BOX was a great diversion, because we had agreed to swap an old car for some computer work AND another computer with one of Roger's oc-workers and when I saw the "computer monitor" on the box, that's what I thought it was! Heeheehee.

Really glad you didn't spend anything over the postage...good lawd, with 18 lbs that was not a pittance!**BG**

I've decided I need to find some spare copies of the book, now, too, as i know several people who will love it. And, I played the tape for Rog last night, while he was fixing supper. I couldn't even read the notes to him about each song because it touches my heart so much, I kept bawling my eyes out. Thanks, again, so much.

hi all,

the term "franking" usally refers to a mark or stamp or written note on a letter of package indicating postage has been paid (or that it's free). This is done when stamps are unavailable and is quite rarely done today.

One of the most common uses of franking was done during WWII when American servicemen had free postage home and there were not any stamps printed to say so.

AND EVERYONE - don't forget the send your photos of your presents so we can all see what everyone got!

Thanks for the info, Blackcatter. The guy at the post office did mumble some sort of speculation that the postage must've fallen off, so I guess there must have been a piece of paper stuck to the package that came off somewhere along the line (not surprising since the package is a flexible pouch, not a solid box). *whew* I'm lucky that it got here!!!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Santa arrived!!!!! The one and only Santa, uh, I mean Dai!! It was awesome!! I got some pictures of Dai at a session, a CD of the session, a shirt from the Pub it was at, a Mug to drink from while listening to the CD and looking at the pictures and wearing the shirt...AND...a pin to put on the shirt!!!

The same day I got the present from Santa, my daughter gave me one as well....her cold. I've been in bed the last couple of days so I couldn't respond to let you know it got here but it did. I'm feeling better today so I plan on taking your advice, spreading out the pictures, putting on the shirt and pin, filling up the mug (VERY important!!), yelling out a hearty "Cheers" and firing up the CD, only pausing it when I feel it's my turn!!

What a great idea, Dai sent me a session!!!! A good one at that....from the looks of the tables, the empty bottles were filling up the tables and the smiles were everywhere! I plan on joining the party, tonight, at my house!! It's been hard NOT to listen to the CD but I wanted to listen to it like I was really there and tonight's the night!!

Thank You very much Dai, it was an awesome idea!!

Remember, and this is very important, to spill plenty of beer on the carpet, so your shoes stick to it...

Merry Xmas to you and yours matey.
