It's a beautiful song, and I have the words in English, but it was originally in Hungarian, I think, and I have heard it in German (on Prairie Home Companion recently). I would like the Hungarian and/or German lyrics. And if it's not already posted somewhere at Mudcat, it would be nice to have the English lyrics posted, too. Laszlo Dobszay has a book out on Hungarian carols (translated title, The Hungarian Carol I); if you are near a large library, you might find it. Still like that jubilating- how to get a more familiar word that will rhyme: hootin' an' hollerin'?, carryin' on?, making a joyful noise? clappin' an' shoutin'?, ululating? - Hmmm, a possible choice. |

Wasn't Austria part of the Austro-Hungarian empire at the time, under the Hapsburgs? I think the language of the empire was German, not Hungarian - but I'm not clear on that. I think of this as a German carol, but sung by the Wiener Sängerknaben, the Vienna Boys' Choir. There may be a Hungarian translation, but I'll betcha the original version is German/Austrian. -Joe Offer-

Also, someone at a song circle recently said it was Hungarian. But maybe my memory is wrong. (I was wrong once before.) Anyway, I thought you Mudcatters could resolve the issue. Genie |

It isn't part of a Hungarian tradition. I have sung it at school in Germany and with the church choir. Tyrol is a part of the Austrian Republic, where mostly German is spoken (on the southern border there are some Slavs who opted for Austria instead of Yugoslavia after WWI). So Joe hints correctly to the former Austrian-Hungarian Empire under the House of Habsburg. This house provided the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary in personal union (1806-1918). "Jubilieren" describes a joyous noise. Via the Latin language the word came to us from biblical Hebrew; yobel is the jubilee year every 50 years, when all debts were dismissed. Maybe from the happiness and loud celebrations at this occasion iubilum in Latin took the meaning of "yodeling" and "soldiers battle cry". The Oxford dictionary puts stress on the the great happiness in "jubilant" and "jubilation". Wilfried |

"Hymns and Carols....." gives no notes on this version, unfortunately. In German, tun schon is correct for 'tuan scho.' And I agree with the liebes. I have two rather heavy dictionaries, but they are no good for regionalisms. This version in German is from the German-American Center, Indiana-Purdue Univs.; verses 1, 2, 6 of those you posted 02 Dec 01, but I'll repeat to keep it in the form at the website. I had some trouble communicating in Vienna because I learned German in Berlin, so I'd say that spoken Viennese German is quite different from what most people are used to hearing. -Joe- |
