Dream songs

Help! My high school English class just finished Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and now I have to do a project on the book. My group chose to do a music video based on the theme "dreams". If you've never read the book it's about these two guys who go around and work on farms. They don't have a home, and pretty much their entire adult lifes are spent trying to earn enough money to buy their dream house. Just when the dream seems to be almost a reality, an extremely unfortunate event occurs, ruining all hope of ever buying their dream house. For my project I'm trying to find songs having to do with dreams, perferably dreams that didn't come true, but anything will do. Any poems or anything! It doesn't matter what type of song, rap, folk, pop, jazz, whatever! Thanks!

Yo, milkdud, if you will put the word dream in the handy-dandy Digitrad and Forum Search box--(the white one, not the blue one) you will get a lot of hits. Right off the top of my head are "Last night I dreamed the strangest dream" and Dream a "Little Dream of Me". There have to be lots!

Most of these can be found on the OLGA website (see the Mudcat FAQ for a link). I tried to find "dream" songs that had to do with the subject and weren't about romance...

A song about (sleeping) dreams: "These Dreams" by Heart; "A Series of Dreams" by Bob Dylan

A song about having dreams (goals): "Running Down a Dream" by Tom Petty; "Dream On" by Aerosmith; "Dreaming My Dream" by the Cranberries; "Find a Dream" by Graham Nash; "I Have a Dream" by Abba; "Infinite Dream" by Iron Maiden; "I Could Dream All Day" by The Posies

A song about shattered dreams: "Dont Dream It's Over" by Crowded House; "Bob Dylan's Dream" by Bob Dylan; "Dreams Never End" by New Order; "Daydream" by Smashing Pumpkins; "Deep Dark & Dreamless Nights" by the Souther/Hillman/Furay Band

Songs about the ideal dream house or ideal home situation: "Our House" by Crosby, Stills & Nash; and "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts.

A sarcastic song about housing developments: "Little Boxes" by Malvina Reynolds (this one's in the Digital Traditions file on this website).

"Dream" lyrics by Johnny Mercer, I think.  It's from the 40's or thereabouts.
"Dream Lover"  (1960's?)
Heart's "These Dreams" is a great one.
The Everly Bros. song is "All I Have To Do Is Dream."
"I'll See You In My Dreams."
"A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes"  (from Disney -- Cinderella, I think)
"I Had The Craziest Dream" (an oldie from about the 30's or 40's)
"Girl Of My Dreams"  (even older)
"Beautiful Dreamer"  (Stephen Foster)
"Daydream Believer"

"When You Wish Upon A Star" ("...as dreamers do...," "...your dreams come true...") "My Isle of Golden Dreams"
"Liebestraum" ("Love's Dream") by Lizst (or is it Liszt?)

Perry Como used to open his TV show with a song: "Dream Along With Me, I'm on my way to a star...".

My personal favorite is still Steve Goodman's Vegamatic about falling asleep with the tv on and dreaming that he orders all of the stuff from the late night ads. He wakes up and finds that he's done it.

Buffie Saint Marie does one called the Dream Tree about a sailor's wife.

Brother can You Spare a Dime is also a great song about thinking you are part of a greater dream, then being cut out of the dream after you've done much of the heavy lifting. Fits in with some of the Steinbeck themes too.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow is a beautiful (if over done) song about dreams.

Henry Lawson's Waterlilly (as sung by Priscilla Herdman) is more of a nightmare song, although a poignant one.

Oh well, this could go on and on. Have fun.

As Sorcha pointed out, anybody can plug "dream" into a search engine and get loads of results to sort through. To find songs that fit Milkdud's project, it helps to know a bit about the song. Probably why he/she asked here - because we know the songs, not just how to use a search engine.

A song about dreams - not the literal kind, but dreams of the future, hopes, plans. Dreams at the beginning of the journey, about hope and the way life will be, or towards the end, when the dream is obviously not going to come true. The songs have to relate to the "Of Mice and Men" theme...hmmm

Bob Dylan's Dream - lyrics here
I'm thinkin' Woody Guthrie ought to have written a few, or Utah Phillips, or maybe Kate Wolf. Nothing else is coming to my mind right now.

Don't forget Masato's suggestion of "I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls" by Enya here -- it just might relate well to the dream of a home. (But I can't quite see Enya music with "Of Mice and Men.")

Help again! I thought the "Dream Home" song Willa suggested sounded like a great idea, but I can't find the lyrics anywhere. She said it was by Brian Bedford, and the only thing I can find about him is that he did the voice for Robin Hood in the Disney movie, and that may not even be the right guy! I was also wondering if anybody could find the words to "Dream Weaver". I know I've heard the song, but I'm just drawing a blank. All the lyric sites only have lyrics for recent songs. If anybody knows of a really good lyric site, please let me know! -milkdud

P.S. I really like the Brother Can You Spare A Dime song. THat was a brilliant idea!!!

Milkdud, here are the words to Dream Weaver. Most of us use the search engine Google.com. If you type in the words "dream weaver" you get too many hits not related to the song. So type in the words "dream weaver lyrics," and it pops up first hit. Also, when searching for lyrics, it's usually better to type in a phrase from the song in quotes. As far as browsing for other songs, many times when you find a site with one song you like there will be other suitable songs at that same site. Good luck. Let us know how the project turns out.

"In My Own Dream" by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Good lyric, and open enough musically to use players you might have for incidental music (or a sort of Greek-chorus) guitarist person just offstage; the minor chords can make it quite ominous).

Dream Home © Brian Bedford Streets are for walking when they don't hold your number,
Roads are for taking when they don't take you home.
Doors make you feel safe but not from the outside,
A dream home's just a dream and all you own.

When you're homeless, nowhere to go ,BR> When you're homeless, who wants to know? BR> If you're homeless, just a form to be lost
When the players count voters and you count the cost

A street is where you park cars but stand and you move on.
Roads are for postmen to find where you're not. ,BR> Doors are for closing when you ask them for shelter. BR> A dream home's just a dream and all you've got

When you're homeless, you sleep where you fall.
When you're homeless, find a hole in the wall
If you're homeless, you're nameless as well,
And inside a dream is where you dwell.
Lanes are for fast cars, crescents for trees.
Every avenue searched leads to somebody's fees,
And doors are for beating when nobody hears,
If your dream of a home disappears.
Streets are for walking when they don't hold your number.
Roads are for taking when they don't take you home

Doors make you feel safe but not from the outside.
A dream home is just a dream and all you own.
