kat, give me some time, I think I have them. Also, I just made a midi of "Oxen and Sheep" which is gorgeous for two dulcimers.

kat, I'm still on the trail. So far I've struck out about 5 times! My friend Stephanie doesn't have it, it's not in my two celtic dulcimer books or my Carols for Dulcimer book, couldn't find it on the web...but I did find this site some time ago which gives the dulcimer melody tab in any tuning. You might be able to throw in your own chords on the beat. click here (This is just the DAD tuning, but you can back up in the URL for other tunings.)

The biggest reason it's not in any of the books is that the accidentals just can't be played in the melody line with any tuning. See the D#s in the second line? (link above) That note just isn't there. That is why there are xxx instead of a fret number.

Thanks, Mary! I appreciate the link and all of your efforts.

Sorcha, that's what was driving me nuts, no matter what tuning I used, it wasn't there. Thanks for the explanation.

What about the GAE tuning using the 6 1/2 fret? There are no X's in the melody line, but I'm not sure how the chords would be played. Is this worth pursuing?

You can 'fake' around the note, esp if you are singing or have some back up. No, the xxs are not in the melody line where the actual notes are--they are in the dulcimer tab below that. I've never known anyone to play it.....

I got the entire melody on the GAE (E is the low string) tuning, but it's not particularly pretty, is a bear to tune, and I can't find any appropriate chords for it. Theoretically I can play an e minor chord, but the tones are so far apart it's just not pretty.

Kat: There's a tab for Greensleeves in The Appalachian Dulcimer Book by Michael Murphy (dAC tuning) and a pretty, fingerpicked version in David Schnaufer's Swing Nine Yards of Calico (DAD capoed at first fret). I've got both, but my scanner's out of commission. E-mail me if you want me to copy and snail mail them.

Pinetop, I'll try to buy those books, if not I may want a copy also. David comes to the KY Music Weekend and I really like his playing and arrangements.

HeyaPinetop, that sounds great. I'll look for the books, first, though, as they sound like good ones. Thank you, very much.

I guess I should have been more clear and asked for the numbers for the melody, rather than tabs, which, If I understand it correctly, are the chords? Anyway, I was just looking for the melody.

In speaking with Spaw, he said I should try it in Aeolian, which I will do, today. I'll holler if it works or not.

Thanks, you three!

kat

The Appalachian Dulcimer Book, Michael Murphy, Folksay Press, ©1976 by Michael Murphy, ISBN 0.8256.2677.3, (about $15 US, ca 1995)

Greensleeves

"Alas, my love - " ...this is rather laborious without a tab program, but perhaps this will be enough to get you started? It continues much as shown above.

The Murphy book has a lot of "history" and other interesting stuff, and I'm sure you'd enjoy it; but his instructions for tunings and such are all in terms of "counting frets," and my S.O. is the authority there. I'd have to draw pictures to figure it all out.

His "Aeolian tuning" instructions are:

Sound the bass string on the sixth fret and tune the first string to this note. Then sound the bass string on the fourth fret and tune the middle string to this note.

Makes perfect sense - and I'm sure it's the standard thing, but don't help me know what note is which.

John

hey kat - I've got it in a book too - Mel Bay's Complete Dulcimer Handbook by Mark Biggs. It's in Aeolian Em, tuned DBE. It shows chords for every note, but the melody is the top note in each chord. With that tuning, you don't have to skip the accidentals, tho you do have to go to the center string to hit them. If you still want it, I'll scan it tonight and e-mail to you.

The heck with scanning, it was only four lines.
ok, I hope this works and is readable.

Greensleeves
Key of Em, Aeolian mode. (tuned dBE)
Top line is the bass string, bottom line is the melody string(s)
6+ is the 6 1/2 fret. x means don't play that string. | is the measure marking. Rhythms is only loosely defined by spacing.

Kat

Throw away the TAB

You are "big-girl" now.

What better tune to develop your "EAR TRAINING" and half-step accidentals in a minor key. You know the tune. You can sing it. You "know" the dulcimer.

WORK IT OUT....HAVE FUN....Become independent!

GROW UP! Let Loose and

Become a FOLK Musician not some mechanical human version of a music-box with a set script.

Thanks, Greg, I do know the tune and I can pick it out. I thought this would also be a good thread for some beginners who might be shy about asking. No harm in that, eh? Sure wish you'd come into PalTalk sometime. I'd play it for ya.

IF YA KNEW...then why did you ASK?

IF YA PLAY - then why didn't you specify the type of dulcimer you were playing?

Where is PalTalk? What state/city is it in? Do they serve beer? Is there a cover? Is it accoustic or amped?

Personaly, I think this thread was a lame attempt to post something "muscial" since everyone seems to be digging into everyone's past threads. And more than few MC's have been coming up short on music and long on gossip.

You've been staying out of my threads..... I'll stay out of yours. (No matter how lame)

Didn't know you had any threads, per se. Would the REAL gargoyle please log in? Check your PM's, claim your territory?

As if you haven't read any of the threads on the Mudcat virtual song circles (Mudcat Snug, Alison in Oz's Celtic Friends, Frank's Toledo Folk), here's a link to www.paltalk.com Load it up and come on in. You will have to bring your own beer, it's acoustic, and there is no cover, but you will most likely get bounced if you get personally nasty, but of course that is up to the admin. of each room. You'd be surprised at how perceptions might change once you've heard a person sing or pick in there.
