26 Dec 01 - 08:41 AM (#616468) Subject: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: Abby Sale Couple of weeks ago I sang "Sam Hall" - the 'God damn your eyes' variant, not the wimped-out 'Damn your eyes' one. One feller really perked up and said he'd never come across a folk song with the word 'shit' in it and did I know any more? I allowed there were many, many but I only sang two or three such. But it got me to thinking that the very strong chorus in this song is quite appropriate considering just how pissed-off Sam Hall really is. I mean, he's unrepentant and about to be hanged so it's understandable, even if not very polite. So, in one of those "what songs can you think of things," what songs can you think of about truly annoyed people. I'm sure I'm blanking as I can only think of one, "THE UNRECONSTRUCTED REBEL." Plus the Ranter, James McPherson, who was clearly annoyed if not quite spitting fire. I'm sure there are many more. Any ideas?

26 Dec 01 - 11:25 AM (#616525) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: heric Since someone has now mentioned non-folk, I have recently taken inspiration from a song about a man beguiled and then betrayed by the feminine wiles of a dark-haired beauty. It's AC/DC's (Now You're Messing with a) Son of a Bitch. With uncharacteristic subtlety, there's no plan of action stated. But truly pissed? Oh, yes indeed. |

26 Dec 01 - 11:50 AM (#616530) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: Roger in Baltimore Some of our singer/songwriters can write some angry songs. Michael Jerling had one called (I think) "Never Met You." [=STUPID] Sample verses: "Will Rogers said he never met a man he didn't like but I'm willing to bet he never met you." Or Richard Shindell's Halloween song (I don't know the title). [=ARE YOU HAPPY NOW] Can't put together and verses, but it is basically a song about "you jilted me, so bugger off." John Gorka wrote a nice song about his car being stolen in New York. [=STRANGER IN MY DRIVER'S SEAT] Tom Paxton wrote a spritely tune to an angry song called "THANK YOU REPUBLIC AIRLINES (for breaking the neck on my guitar)" There is an old blues song with the line "I feel like snappin' a pistol, Baby in your face. / You know that graveyard will be your restin' place." I think the list will be very long. Since I grew up in a family where anger was seldom expressed, I find myself attracted to "angry songs." Roger in Baltimore |

I keep my ears way wide for 'em too. I submit: 'MAGGIE MAY' yea it's pop, so what? 'Hurricane' Warren Zevon can do an angry song: 'Play it All Night Long' might qualify And of course, the master, Richard Thompson, always sharp-eyed and hard-edged: 'The New Me', 'GOD LOVES A DRUNK', 'Mother Knows Best' |

"Mother Rage" by Kathy Fire Angry Lesbian Folk Buy Lesbian Folk Music Liner Notes Torture Factor = 8 Nothing can start your day off better then a big fat helping of angry lesbian folk music. Kathy Fire's call to arms is a war cry to virulent lesbians everywhere. This is a very ireful woman who warns men that our "day of castration" is near. A dance instructor, fine talented man, Eddie Carrier, who attempted to teach my two left feet (then in their third and fourth years of stumbling instruction), was newly moved into the same apartment complex with Sonny and Cher. One afternoon, he was late to the studio to teach our small class. His explanation was that a horrific, screaming, bashing, crashing argument had broken out. He called the police. An hour later, there was a terrible pounding on his door and Cher proceeded to "rip him a new-one" about his interfering with their domestic-noise, demanding that he "Never, ever, call the police again," explaining that "this was how they made love!" |

"..'twas blood for blood without remorse I took out o'er them freely..." Strangely enough, I don't see a lot of this emotion being expressed in the music of the American Civil War, where Lord knows there was more than enough furious, enraged ferocity to go around for four years or so. Residuals of that toxic flood may still be encountered in some places to this day. Why more songs were not written in the vein of "Good Ol' Rebel" formerly mentioned, I can hardly speculate. Perhaps they considered themselves "above" that sort of thing back then. |

28 Dec 01 - 03:17 AM (#617505) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: Don Firth Sam Hall and his parting oration has gone down in history, at least in song form. But he might have swung unremembered had it not for the large crowd that had gathered to see hanged, not Sam Hall, but a handsome, dashing highwayman whose exploits had made him something of a popular hero. Sam, a chimney-sweep by trade before he ran a-foul of the law, cowered in the corner of the cart that was hauling him and the highwayman to the gallows. As the crowd lining the streets cheered the highwayman on to his doom, the highwayman stood tall and proud, acknowledging the cheers and blowing kisses to the ladies. At one point, a wheel of the cart hit a loose cobblestone and the cart lurched, throwing Sam against the highwayman. The highwayman shoved him back into the corner and, ostentatiously brushing the soot off the sleeve of his doublet, he said, "Stand off, varlet, stand off!" Sam crouched in the corner and snarled, "Stand off yerself! I've as much right to be here as you 'ave!" Don Firth |

Jack Orion/Glasgerion is pretty pissed off when he hangs Tom--or lops off his head, depending on the version. And, in the end of some Gypsy Laddie versions: He's sent for a hangman frae Fife and anither frae oot kircaudy, o he's hanged the gypsies yin by yin for the stealin of his lady, o. On the punk side, The jam used to have a song called Mr. Clean which had the lines: If you see me in the street, look away coz I don't ever want to catch you lookin' at me, Mr. Clean Coz I hate you and your wife and if I get the chance I'll fuck up your life, Mr. Clean. It was a string of Irish curses, clearly sung by a totally pissed-off person. It had things like "May your cock never crow" and "May your hens never lay" but went on to very complex curses. Does this ring a bell? I think there was no story, just the steady string of curses. Maggie |

I remember hearing this song on Dr. Demento years ago. It has a catchy tune to it. These words are the "campfire songs" version.
WITH 'ER 'EAD TUCKED UNDERNEATH 'ER ARM
In the Tower of London, large as life,
CHORUS With her head tucked underneath her arm
She comes to haunt King Henry
She walks the drafty corridors,
One night old King Henry laid a spread
The sentries think that it's a football [and/or basketball]
One night she caught King Henry
She comes to haunt King Henry |

29 Dec 01 - 02:26 PM (#618160) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: WyoWoman Some of the best songs are motivated by being really pissed off, but the songs aren't overtly pissed, e.g. "ALL QUIET ALONG THE POTOMAC TO-NIGHT," which was spurred by a newspaper story that said (paraphrasing) "All quiet along the Potomac tonight, no officers shot -- only the occasional sentry ... " or "AIN'T I A WOMAN," based on Sojourner Truth's speech, or how about "WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THE RAIN" or ... Come to think of it, a LOT of songs are motivated by pissed-offness, yes? And it's interesting to me that most of the overtly pissed off ones involve men. Women tend to get very sad rather than angry. Too bad. 29 Dec 01 - 08:26 PM (#618327) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: leprechaun Now I remember. Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks! If you just listen to the tune, you'd never know it was about O'Reilly smashing somebody's face. I guess the poor guy didn't really even drink O'Reilly's beer either. O'Reilly was drunk and mistaken. That reminds me of a story about my own drunken self. Luckily, I'm not nearly as pugnacious as the fictional fellow in the song. It was St. Patty's Day a few years ago. After listening to the band at the Knight's of Columbus, we made our way to the most Irish bar in town. (My German wife being the designated driver, and not inclined to celebrate St. Pat's Day all that vigorously, she waited in the minivan in the parking lot) The bar was crowded. As I walked through with my blackthorn walking stick,(the same old shillelegh me father brought from Ireland)I felt a brief, but friendly grab on my posterior. I turned around and couldn't tell which of the hundreds of people had done it, so I just hoped it was the pretty colleen, naturally assuming she liked my green top hat. For all I know it could have been some big hairy drunken oaf, you never know in my town, but I quickly put that thought out of my head. Anyway I got a shot of Jameson's and plugged a dollar into the juke box to play some Irish tunes. At some point I noticed my pager was missing. That butt-grabbin' tart must have stolen my pager! I quickly informed my brother of the crime, so he could help me look for the perpetrator. I stomped around the bar a couple of times, but I'm sure I wouldn't have recognized her if I'd seen her. Maybe I was just looking for somebody with a guilty face. I was able to make my way to the pay phone, where I leaned my blackthorn walking stick (the same old shillelegh me father brought from Ireland) against the wall. I fished out a quarter and I must not have been as drunk as I should have been, because I managed to call my pager and put in the number of the pay phone. It was futile investigative method. My pager is always on vibrate, and I could never have heard it in that noisy bar. The owner felt so sorry for us he treated me and my brother to another shot of Jameson's. Of course he does that whether he feels sorry for us or not. My brother and I walked out, cursing our luck. Of course the first thing I put my hand on when I got back in the minivan was my still vibrating pager. We had quite a laugh about that on our way home, saying it's a good thing we never found that girl that grabbed my ass. All was well, until the next morning when I realized my blackthorn walking stick (the same old shillelegh me father brought from Ireland) hadn't made its way out of the tavern. The next mornin' we made our way back to the bar. What with hundreds of people in there the night before, what are the chances my cane will still be there? But sure enough, somebody brought it to the owner and he knew right away who it belonged to. Now I leave my pager at home on Saint Patrick's Day.

03 Jan 02 - 12:11 PM (#620414) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: Bennet Zurofsky "I Hate the Capitalist System" was written by Aunt Molly Jackson, who had good reason to be angry over the coal bosses in her part of Appalachia. Aunt Molly rarely gets the attention or credit she deserves. If she were still alive I am sure she would be royally pissed if someone named Mary Cliff claimed to be the composer. Aunt Molly is one of the finest political singer-songwriters that I have ever heard, as well as a fine singer of traditional ballads. She is an extremely powerful and moving singer. She made a few trips to New York City to gather support for the National Mineworkers Union (NMU) and the CIO and I believe she performed at Madison Square Garden on one of these trips, but in general her work received little notice, especially outside of left-wing circles. Upon re-reading Ferrara's posting, perhaps I misunderstood and Mary Cliff simply played Aunt Molly's recording for the gathering. If so, Ms. Cliff should be praised rather than damned. It probably was not a field recording, however. I believe Aunt Molly recorded "I Hate the Capitalist System" at the Library of Congress, probably for Alan Lomax. Rounder published an excellent L.P. of Aunt Molly Jackson, which included "I Hate the Capitalist System." I don't know if they have published it as a cd. If not, they certainly should, and probably will, as part of their ongoing Alan Lomax project. |

"He has taken my little parrakeets that nest beneath the Line, "He has stripped my rails of the shaddock-frails and the green unripened pine; "He has taken my bale of dammer and spice I won beyond the seas, "He has taken my grinning heathen gods—and what should he want o' these? "My foremast would not mend his boom, my deckhouse patch his boats; "He has whittled the two, this Yank Yahoo, to peddle for shoe-peg oats. "I could not fight for the failing light and a rough beam-sea beside, "But I hulled him once for a clumsy crimp and twice because he lied. "Had I had guns (as I had goods) to work my Christian harm, "I had run him up from his quarter-deck to trade with his own yard-arm; "I had nailed his ears to my capstan-head, and ripped them off with a saw, "And soused them in the bilgewater, and served them to him raw; "I had flung him blind in a rudderless boat to rot in the rocking dark, "I had towed him aft of his own craft, a bait for his brother shark; "I had lapped him round with cocoa husk, and drenched him with the oil, "And lashed him fast to his own mast to blaze above my spoil; "I had stripped his hide for my hammock-side, and tasselled his beard i' the mesh, "And spitted his crew on the live bamboo that grows through the gangrened flesh; "I had hove him down by the mangroves brown, where the mud-reef sucks and draws, "Moored by the heel to his own keel to wait for the land-crab's claws! "He is lazar within and lime without, ye can nose him far enow, "For he carries the taint of a musky ship—the reek of the slaver's dhow!" Peter. PS - Sinsull, the 'revenge song' you asked about sounds a lot like Tom Russell's "The Sky Above, The Mud Below" - from which I quoted near the top of this thread, about 5 years ago (!). EMPIRE HOTEL - by John Warner The eavesdropper gets his come-uppance. The tune is a variation on "The Farmer's Toast". (1994) Sung as question and response with male and female singer. Both: Early one morning I stood in Walhalla By the Empire Hotel at the break of the day. And somewhere upstairs there were two lovers talking, So softly I listened to what they did say. Man: "Why are you stirring, my darling, my dearie? It's dark even now and the moon sheds no beam." Woman: "I've just heard the footstep of Coker, the fireman, He's off to the minehead to start raising steam." "Why are you rising, my fine, lusty lover, Surely there's hours till the break of the day?" "Shake off the wine from your last night's carousing, And look through the window, the light it is gray." "Why are you dressing your warm, shapely body, Sliding up garters and lacing your stays?" "The room's to be cleaning, the bed's to be making, And both of us working like all other days." As the sun rose, I was still in Walhalla, Beside that hotel above cold Stringer's Creek, Charmed by the words of those two secret lovers, I drew even closer to where they did speak. "Where are my trousers, my boots and my jacket, Where is my wallet, you sour faced whore?" "Your wallet's right here till you've paid for your pleasure, Your clothes, where you led them right there on the floor." "The hooter is sounding, the skips will be rolling And soon the gold batteries will rattle the ground." "If you're late again, they will fire you this time If you're out of cash, then you needn't come round." "You're a slut! You're a thief, Christ, a man must be senseless To waste all his money on drink and a whore!" "An hour ago I was "darling" and "dearie" And I'll wager this evening you'll be back for more." "Well, here's thirty pieces of my hard earned silver, The last evening's money I'm wasting on you." "The loss is your own, of both silver and pleasure, If one man does not, many others can do." And when he had gone out the door in a flurry, She drew from the bedside her old chamber pot, Out of the window she emptied the contents, I was listening below and collected the lot. Hark to the eavesdropper cursing at morning, Don't sniff too long at his curious smell, But from his cruel fortune take heed and take warning Don't listen to lovers at the Empire Hotel. |

His most pissed off song was after Pearl Harbour titled "SLAP THE DIRTY LITTLE JAP." Not very politically correct today but the perspective was different during WW2. |

18 Oct 06 - 07:00 PM (#1862710) Subject: Lyr Add: ALL USED UP (Utah Phillips) From: Uncle_DaveO Someone mentioned Utah Philips's ALL USED UP Here it is, in all its glory! ALL USED UP (U. Utah Phillips) I spent my whole life making somebody rich I busted my ass for that son of a bitch He left me to die like a dog in a ditch And told me I'm all used up He used up my labor, he used up my time He plundered my body and squandered my mind Then he gave me a pension, of handouts and wine And told me I'm all used up My kids are in hock to a god you call Work Slaving their lives out for some other jerk And my youngest in 'Frisco just made shipping-clerk He don't know I'm all used up Some young people reach out for power and gold And they don't have respect for anything old For pennies they're bought, and for promises sold Someday they'll be all used up They use up the oil, they use up the trees They use up the air and they use up the seas But how about you, friend, and how about me What's left, when we're all used up? I'll finish my life in this crummy hotel It's lousy with bugs and my God, what a smell But my plumbing still works and I'm clear as a bell Don't tell me I'm all used up Outside of my window the world passes by It gives me a handout, then spits in my eye And no one can tell me, 'cause no one knows why I'm still living, but I'm all used up Sometimes in a dream I sit by a tree My life is a book of how things used to be And the kids gather 'round and they listen to me They don't think I'm all used up And there's songs and there's laughter and things I can do And all that I've learned I can give back to you And I'd give my last breath just to make it come true And to know I'm not all used up They use up the oil, they use up the trees They use up the air and they use up the seas But as long as I'm breathing they won't use up me Don't tell me I'm all used up Dave Oesterreich |

18 Oct 06 - 10:39 PM (#1862836) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: Artful Codger "Abe Carmen", in Peter Bellamy's second version, packs a good bit of bile. And there's Eubie Blake's "Hit the Road": a woman's instructions in no uncertain terms to her philandering husband. "LONG LANKIN" was clearly pissed off when he did a slice-and-dice on his neighbor's young wife and baby. A propos of gleeful bloodfests, in the version I learned of "With Her Head", "Gadzooks, she's gonna tell him off for having spilt her gore." --- WARNING: THREAD CREEP The poem Abby quoted by "Black Bart, the Po8" (Charles Boles aka. Bolton) is genuine, but her comments echoed a couple common myths. Despite his self-chosen sobriquet, he was not really in the habit of leaving poems at his hold-ups. Over his entire eight year career as a stage robber, in which he is credited for at least 27 known robberies and attempts, he left poems at only his fourth and fifth heists; then he abandoned the affectation. His entire poetic corpus consists of just twelve lines. He once said that he contemplated leaving another poem at his last hold-up, but he may have been gilding the lily. How pissed off he was is also a matter of conjecture. The poems seem intentionally designed to throw off the scent. He wrote the lines in different handwriting styles, and the doggerel and swearing helped create an impression of a man quite different from his San Francisco alter ego, an urbane mining executive (as he pretended to be) of sober habits. He couldn't hide his natural persona completely, though - he was unusually courteous when conducting hold-ups, and abstained from robbing stage passengers. Furthermore, below that famous first poem, he added this note: "Driver, give my respects to our old friend, the other driver; but I really had a notion to hang my old disguise hat on his weather eye." There's more twinkle than spitfire in his tone. His second poem is probably closer to the truth than the first: "Here I lay me down to sleep To wait the coming morrow Perhaps success, perhaps defeat, And everlasting sorrow. Let come what will I'll try it on My condition can't be worse; But if there's money in the box Tis munny in my purse." Upon Bolton's release, a newsman asked him if he intended to write more verse. With characteristic wit, he replied something like, "Young man, didn't you hear me say I would commit no more crimes?" His first poem has indeed been incorporated into songs. One example, "El Corrido de Bartolo Negro" appears in Katie Lee's Ten Thousand Goddam Cattle - though both the song and Lee's commentary are rife with errors. (Lee also quotes the poems in a curious composite form, with the first embedded in the middle of the second, the way they once appeared in a circular about the robberies and which was soon copied.) |

19 Oct 06 - 12:51 AM (#1862879) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: GUEST,DS There's JIM JONES which might count more as bitter than pissed off. The last verse goes (from memory): Oh it's day and night the irons clang and like poor galley slaves, We toil and toil and when we die must fill dishonored graves, But it's by and by I'll slip me chains and to the bush I'll go, And I'll join the brave bush rangers there Jack Donohue & Co. And some dark night when everything is silent in the town, I'll shoot the buggers one and all - I'll gun the floggers down, Oh I'll give the law no little shock remember what I say, And they'll yet regret they brought Jim Jones in chains to Botany Bay. Cyril Tawney's FIVE FOOT FLIRT is pissed off: You're my 5' flirt in the robes of an angel, Ya better had leave I alone, Why the way you're behavin' it nearly unnerves I, The thing that preserves I is my joviality. Though I've got trouble as thick as my stubble, It's you that's the worst of them all, So get out of me track and if ya wants to come back, You can crawl, crawl, crawl. Seems to me that writing something pissed off is like writing something bawdy or pornographic; it's easy compared to writing something clever that's pissed off, bawdy or pornographic. |

19 Oct 06 - 10:18 AM (#1863199) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: Bunnahabhain Quite a bit of Show of hands writing is more than slightly pissed off. ROOTS, on their latest is a good example. If you're in East Anglia, get Simon Richie to do his version of 'I am an Antichrist'. A morris dancer declaring himself to be an anarchist just seems right, if somewhat obvious. And it's punk on a melodion..... |

I only wish we'd won And I don't want no pardon for anything I've done I hates the Yankee nation and everything they do I hates the Declaration of Independence too I hates the glorious union....'tis driven with our blood And I hates the striped banner, I fought it all I could BREAK Three hundred thousand Yankees are stiff in Southern dust We got three hundred thousand before they conquered us They died of Southern fever, and Southern steel and shot And I wish it was three million instead of what we got I won't be reconstructed, I'm better now than then And for that Carpetbagger, I don't give a damn So I'm off for the frontier... soon as I can go I'll prepare a weapon and start for Mexico Words by Major Innes Randolph, CSA, to the tune of "Joe Bowers" Note that about 10 REALLY obnoxious verses are omitted in Ry Cooder's version (crap about joining the KKK, etc.) |

07 Jun 11 - 09:36 PM (#3166839) Subject: RE: Songs about truly pissed-off people From: Joe_F I'm an ordinary figure in these democratic states, A pathetic demonstration of hereditary traits. As the children of the cops possess the flattest kind of feet And the daughter of a floosy has a wiggle to her seat, My position at the bottom of society I owe To the qualities my parents bequeathed me long ago. My father was a married man, and what is even more, He was married to my mother, a fact that I deplore. I was born in holy wedlock; consequently bye and bye I was rooked by every bastard with plunder in his eye. I invested, I deposited, I voted every fall, And if I saved a penny, the bastards took it all. At last I've learned my lesson and I'm on the proper track: I'm a self-appointed bastard, and I'm going to get it back. -- Ogden Nash, "Four Prominent Bastards", last stanza (1933, in case you thought it topical) |
