"Boy, I hate to be a party pooper since I'm such a booster of this place, but the whole 'mudcatter of the year' thing troubles me a bit. What makes this site special is it's collective personality. There are people who have offered SO much help, but in threads that guitarists only look at. Same with ballad threads. Same with accordion threads. Same with threads where people are having serious personal difficulties, etc. etc. SO MANY help in so many different ways that may not be apparent to the group as a whole. The overwhelming dynamic is SO positive that the creepiest critics no matter HOW long they've been here, are forced to do their spewing under 'Guest' monikers. And, it is after all just a bit of the fun that goes on around here. I suppose we could have broken it down even more and made it for each section as you've noted, i.e. helpful in guitar thread, in general threads, etc., but for a first time I don't think Gareth and Amos did too badly and I know Skarpi had the best of intentions with the original thread. I don't think it fair to do this sort of thing, just like I don't like the Queens' Honours list (mind you I don't like the Queen much either!). It highlights those who have blown their own trumpets about their achievements, which is vulgar, and it skims over those who just go on plodding, day after day, week after week, and get the work done. This year has highlighted this enormously. Individuals have shouted from the highest rooftop their sinlge achievements, when they should have kept decently quiet. They have been recognised for one thing, which makes them think they are universally adored, and can do no wrong. They believe that because they are regarded with honour in one place for one action, that they can impose all their wishes, desires, beliefs and lifestyle on all others across the world. Suddenly, because of one action by someone else, a whole heap of people get shoved into the limelight and patronised, just for going about their everyday business. Where is the praise and adoration when they ask for a decent wage, for better working conditions, for sensible working hours, for more money to replace worn out and dangerous equipment? And if you think this "song" is about you - it probably is!!! LTS

First thought comes to mind would be of course, Max, for making this wonder available to all of us. Secondly, the folks that help keep it going, Joe, Pene, and others whom we don't even know for sure are behind the scene workers. Thirdly, all the wonderful folks that grace us here with their presence; ie:Jean Ritchie, who has had a large effect in all our lives, Art Thieme, whose determination and good sense of humor has inspired many of us, Catspaw, who we have seen through many rough times, all of us holding our breaths day to day for news of his progress. This is just a small sample of the many folks that have made this place a joy to come to, there are many others, too many to name. How can we make such a choice? |

One catter of the year is an impossible choice. That's why I suggested various funny categories exactly, gnu, like high school. It is also true that there are many more than one prety good candidates for and role -- for example the Republican nomination for President -- and many more qualified than the one who ends up being nominated. People choose anyway. We're not shooting for Truth and Beauty here, folks. This is supposed to be a sorta parlor game. Don't take it TOO seriously!! Yes, it sounds like high school--which is the place where most of us suffered more than anywhere else before or since. Personally, I really hoped that hierarchies, gradations from best to worst, top to bottom, weren't going to enter my life or my thinking anymore. I also wouldn't run a contest for "Favorite member of my coffee club", or "Best parent", "Best child", "most fun co-worker". It can't help but be hurtful, no matter how innocently intentioned. When it comes to categories, I've always liked the sound of "Most likely to succumb" -- but only for its euphonious silliness. |
