One more thing I'm curious about...was it just that you were determined tto be the 1st person to troll us in 2002, or is it that you are determined to have a go at all the UK 'catters & to work up slowly to taking on the wider world as your 'confidence' grows? |

01 Jan 02 - 01:20 AM (#619324) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: marty D I'm repeating a post I made in the other 'mudcatter of the year' thread because I hadn't seen this one. Sorry for the repetition, but it's something I feel strongly about. "Boy, I hate to be a party pooper since I'm such a booster of this place, but the whole 'mudcatter of the year' thing troubles me a bit. What makes this site special is it's collective personality. There are people who have offered SO much help, but in threads that guitarists only look at. Same with ballad threads. Same with accordion threads. Same with threads where people are having serious personal difficulties, etc. etc. SO MANY help in so many different ways that may not be apparent to the group as a whole. The overwhelming dynamic is SO positive that the creepiest critics no matter HOW long they've been here, are forced to do their spewing under 'Guest' monikers. That in itself says a LOT for the site's community feel. I certainly won't be voting for individual honors, and I have no idea whether anyone agrees with me, but that's the way I feel." marty |
01 Jan 02 - 01:36 AM (#619330) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: katlaughing Well, you've got a point, Marty, but I think if you look at the 'Cat-a-gories as Gareth and Amos lined them up, there's room for a bit of choosing. And, it is after all just a bit of the fun that goes on around here. I suppose we could have broken it down even more and made it for each section as you've noted, i.e. helpful in guitar thread, in general threads, etc., but for a first time I don't think Gareth and Amos did too badly and I know Skarpi had the best of intentions with the original thread. All the best, kat |

01 Jan 02 - 04:59 AM (#619371) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: Liz the Squeak I posted, but you might not like it..... I don't think it fair to do this sort of thing, just like I don't like the Queens' Honours list (mind you I don't like the Queen much either!). It highlights those who have blown their own trumpets about their achievements, which is vulgar, and it skims over those who just go on plodding, day after day, week after week, and get the work done. This year has highlighted this enormously. Individuals have shouted from the highest rooftop their sinlge achievements, when they should have kept decently quiet. They have been recognised for one thing, which makes them think they are universally adored, and can do no wrong. They believe that because they are regarded with honour in one place for one action, that they can impose all their wishes, desires, beliefs and lifestyle on all others across the world. Suddenly, because of one action by someone else, a whole heap of people get shoved into the limelight and patronised, just for going about their everyday business. Where is the praise and adoration when they ask for a decent wage, for better working conditions, for sensible working hours, for more money to replace worn out and dangerous equipment? And if you think this "song" is about you - it probably is!!! LTS

01 Jan 02 - 07:38 AM (#619397) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: Banjer I too feel that I could not make a choice of ONE indiviudal of the year. First thought comes to mind would be of course, Max, for making this wonder available to all of us. Secondly, the folks that help keep it going, Joe, Pene, and others whom we don't even know for sure are behind the scene workers. Thirdly, all the wonderful folks that grace us here with their presence; ie:Jean Ritchie, who has had a large effect in all our lives, Art Thieme, whose determination and good sense of humor has inspired many of us, Catspaw, who we have seen through many rough times, all of us holding our breaths day to day for news of his progress. This is just a small sample of the many folks that have made this place a joy to come to, there are many others, too many to name. How can we make such a choice? |
01 Jan 02 - 10:50 AM (#619428) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: Amos Hmmm. too many jewels to pick from at the 'Cat? I concur. One catter of the year is an impossible choice. That's why I suggested various funny categories exactly, gnu, like high school. It is also true that there are many more than one prety good candidates for and role -- for example the Republican nomination for President -- and many more qualified than the one who ends up being nominated. People choose anyway. We're not shooting for Truth and Beauty here, folks. This is supposed to be a sorta parlor game. Don't take it TOO seriously!! If there are goingt obe hurt feelings because not all candidates can win all caregories then, may I humbly suggest, someone needs to have their hide toughened a bit or drop in on "LivesRUs".com

Problems can be: It is much more reliable to use a server-based technology to send such form results. If your provider does not allow you to use CGI/PHP/ASP/JSP/Servlet/... there are some free formmail providers you could use. Ask google for "free formmailer" and take your pick. MudGuard |

03 Jan 02 - 10:39 AM (#620362) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: SharonA I have to agree with CarolC: there are too many people whose worthy contributions to Mudcat would be overlooked while playing this "parlor game". So many games of this type can end up being unintentionally hurtful because of their intentionally exclusionary quality. Also, I fear that the results of this game will "feed" the trolls who complain about the "inner circle" of popularity at Mudcat. Therefore, I am joining the ranks of those who will not be participating in this vote. Sharon |
03 Jan 02 - 01:17 PM (#620432) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: Pseudolus It's not the winning that counts, it's having the chance to nominate someone for something he/she did that made you happy/laugh/understand/feel comfort/think/see/do/be!! 03 Jan 02 - 02:02 PM (#620446) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: SharonA But Pseudolus, more than one person here has made me "happy/laugh/understand/feel comfort/think/see/do/be"! By nominating one person for one thing he/she did, I pass over many others for all the things they've done. What I'm trying to avoid doing is snubbing anyone by playing an exclusionary game that says "this person's contribution is favored over that person's contribution". I think it's far better to tell everyone who has helped me in any way how much they all are appreciated. |
03 Jan 02 - 02:05 PM (#620447) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: Deda We want to run this like high school? I wouldn't go back to high school for all the tea in China, thanks, and I really love tea. The most whatever, according to whom, and on which day? Yes, it sounds like high school--which is the place where most of us suffered more than anywhere else before or since. Personally, I really hoped that hierarchies, gradations from best to worst, top to bottom, weren't going to enter my life or my thinking anymore. I also wouldn't run a contest for "Favorite member of my coffee club", or "Best parent", "Best child", "most fun co-worker". It can't help but be hurtful, no matter how innocently intentioned. When it comes to categories, I've always liked the sound of "Most likely to succumb" -- but only for its euphonious silliness. |

I'd like to see a list of all the nominees without number of nominations listed. It's easy to focus in on the names you recognize, those frequent posters. Right now I do have an opinion about some of the categories. If others have noticed the contributions of the less frequent & nominate them, I might actually pay more attention to what they are saying as well. |
03 Jan 02 - 07:48 PM (#620648) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: katlaughing That's an interessting idea, Burke. As a compromise, why don't we just see a list of everyone who was nominated for each category and leave it at that? 04 Jan 02 - 05:49 PM (#621173) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: catspaw49 Give it up Gareth......Lots of folks are worried about the high school aspect so I suggest we just keep making a few awards here and there like I've been doing. Matter of fact we could give you the "Catter Most Likely To Create a Poll on Any Damn Thing." Or we give Ali the "Catter Most Likely to Drop Out of Sight After Posting Some More of His Wackyass Shit." He might have to share that with khandu though......... How about we give Jeri the "Most Musically Promising Catter Who Has Dragonflies on Her Hooters?" (You oughta' see the trophy for that one!) And Shambles of course.....Roger has really found his niche as a Crusading Catter which fits well with his abilities to write long treatises on the simplest subject like "my day at the zoo." So for Sham, the "Catter Most Likely to Write 3 Epics Each Longer than War and Peace to Save All Used Bazouki Strings." And there is Banjer who definitely qualifies as the "Catter Most Likely to Have a Future in Bronzed Dog Shit." Spaw |

06 Jan 02 - 10:37 AM (#622134) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: Gareth Results of a sort. Some quick work with Excell and here come the nominations. Please note that all that was required to make the list was one nomination in any category. BTW There did seem to be an American flavour to the participation - I don't suppose that this should be strange - This is more an American thing than than us reserved Brits, and other non amarican citizens. In Alphabetical order, paying no attention to catagory, spelling or number of nominations :-
Aine It was a good return - many participated. Now I could put this little list of names up for a run off ballot. But that would be unfair. Besides the joeclones & Mudelves could undoubtbly ensure that matters were resolved to thier entire satisfaction. Instead I am going to take an example out of the American Electorial system and form an electoral college of One (ME) Using all posible electronic methods, and carefully eliminating "hanging Chads" (Sorry Al !) I will anounce the winner(s) later tonite. As with Judge Roy Bean, judges decision will be final. Gareth Gareth |

So on the 13th day of christmas here In Iceland or In (warmland) In the south raining winds all the best to you all and I hope we can help Max with his trouble . 06 Jan 02 - 11:33 AM (#622147) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: gnu Hey, I note that there are some who did post to this thread that are not on the list, so my hypothesis is flawed, but I still think I must have been nominated for Most w/o a Life... or Thinnest Skinned... or Most Likely to Post When He Should Know Better... or... geez, even I don't like me. |

06 Jan 02 - 06:31 PM (#622356) Subject: RE: Mudcatter of the year - Nominations Plea From: Gareth Gunther, the Royal Oak I visit is in Wales, not Scapa Floe.
The Royal Oak having closed (and I set this up before visiting) Now, the big one, the Winner of the Mudcatter of the Year Award 2001. It was a hard choice, but I can say without fear or favour it was a unanimous decision of our electoral college (me). First and foremost in the nominations as they rolled in, was the overwhelming gratitude to those who spent their time and effort keeping the site running, correcting our errors, passing out good advice, and information and acting as a moderating influence.
I am humbly proud to announce the Joint winners of the Mudcatter of the Year 2001In no particular order, the joint winners are: - Max, Joe, Pene, The Mudcat staff & helpers, The Joe Clones, The Mud Elves, & Everybody who took the time to answer, or help on a question..
All those involved in the nominations, and those who nominated, not thinking of themselves, are awarded the Thank you all for participating. Gareth |
