01 Jan 02 - 11:07 AM (#619434) Subject: Who made my Banjo From: GUEST,Allan S. Can anyone identify my new banjo that I picked up at a local flea market, name, maker, and aprox cost new. Resonator 5 string banjo no name or maker anywhere. Appear so be relatively new, and has the look as tho made in Japan, Korea, China??? On the headstock is a Pearl looking inlay in the shape of a maple leaf. On the neck are six sided pearl looking inlays at the 3rd. 5th,7th 10th, 12,15,and 17th fret. White strips on the sides of the neck. The side of the neck there are black dots on the white strip at the same frets. White strips at the top and bottom of the sides of the resonator. A green piece of felt between the bottom of the neck and the resonator. Truss rod in the neck. Tuning machines also have pearl plastic buttons? Bridge is made by Grover w/ black and white inlays for strings. Thanx for any help Allan |

I saw another identical banjo at a music store with the "Irma" name on the headstock or something that sounded like that. Also saw pictures of another brand that looked the same. Mine had a little peel off sticker that said "made in korea". They are made at the Samick factory there. Fender sells a similar looking banjo that i believe is made in the Samick factory also. The one i have is quite a good sounding and playing instrument. Certainly worth the $200 i paid for it. It has a wooden rim, some have aluminum one piece rims. I didn't see any difference in any of them except for the name on the headstock. |

The imported banjos with the wooden rim/gibson type brackets usually go for around $300-$350 or so, Solid one-piece aluminum rim types for around $200. |

I sometimes try to guess if the peghead shape is familiar or if the tone ring is an identifiable kind, but all you have on the last one here is "Bell..." on a metal plate. It could be "Silver Bell," in which case it's a really desirable Bacon & Day shell (though the description of the neck doesn't sound right, and B&D 5-strings are really rare), or it could be "Maybelle," made by Slingerland (as I recall), in which case it's less valuable but still pretty good (and they, too, made few 5-strings). Or it could be something else entirely. Since it's an open-back, it doesn't sound like a modern Oriental Import© but an older kind of instrument. But the "Fender" peghead sounds a lot like it's either a modern oddity, like my GoldTone guitar banjo, which has a Fender Telecaster peghead (and a single-coil pickup, too), but the other possibility that occurs to me is that it's a really old banjo, from the 1850s-70s, and the peghead is a version of the "scroll" style seen on Boucher banjos and others from the Minstrel days. How large is the shell? If it's big, like 12" or more, and made with one ply of bent wood, it might be one of the really old ones. Does it have brackets to tighten the head? How many? I have a few banjos, some, very old, with serious pedigrees, while others seem to be made from bits and pieces of spare parts. One of mine, I know is a hybrid, because I had a neck custom made for it that's quite different from the original neck. Another one is a tenor that's been converted int a five-string. Yours looks like it could be a banjo made from parts as well. |

I'd say home-made, but it might be cut down. Are there extra holes where the other two tuners would have been? I examined the thing further and I have realized that the front of the headstock is painted solid black, but the back of it as well as the bask of the whole neck and the "drum"like thing are translucent dark green. (by "drum-like" I mean the "body" - sorry for my terrible non-banjo vocabulary, I am a bass/guitar player... YET! :) I did not find any signature or serial number or anything similar. Their earlier ones were probably Samick products, but a lot of that job-lot work has moved to China these days. Unless it's a really high-quality model, $400 is pricey. That's a new price, not a pawn-shop price. However, if it truly is one of their top models, it was probably $700-800 list price, so $400 used isn't so bad. Look up the model number online (Fender's site or Google "Fender banjo model XXX" and see what you find. Bob |

A diamond shape being one of the easiest ones to cut in mother-of-pearl, or similar shell. It is fairly typical of banjo neck inlay, often used as one of the fret position marks. You are much more likely to find a maker's name, or brand number stamped into the wood at the heel, or on a "perch pole" which connects the neck through the drum. Quack! GtD. |

You did imply that it was originally a four-string, converted to five. But that's not at all helpful. But is it open or closed back? What sort of neck and fingerboard decoration, if it still has the original neck? What's the shape of the tuning head, if original? Diameter of the drum? Any name ANYWHERE? What sort of tuning machines does it have? The more details you give, the more likelihood of at least a fair guess.

There are no marking on anything. I'm trying to find out who the maker is and when it was made. |

It has 2 stickers on the back of the head. One stays "W7" (is this a model #?), while the other is an inspection tag (suggesting mass produced?). The headstock, neck and resonator appear to be made of solid mahogany with a rosewood fretboard & armrest. The resonator sides are thick, perhaps ¼ inch. The metal pot looks to be cast aluminum. Who and where was this made? Does it have much value? Thx much. Ray |
